To make a 24/7 rain ambience stream with distant city traffic, prepare original or properly licensed audio, build a simple OBS scene, create a YouTube live broadcast, and test an upload bitrate your connection can sustain. Plan for interruptions and archives before going live: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, and a license does not always prevent a Content ID interruption.
1. Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube currently requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its help page also says streamers must be at least 16. Requirements can change, so check the channel’s Live Control Room before preparing a long broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance has the eligibility details.
2. Create a rain-and-traffic soundscape you can use
Record your own audio
Original recordings give you control over the balance, distance, and character of the sound. Record rain and traffic separately if you want to mix them independently, or capture a location where the traffic is naturally distant. A stereo field recorder is optional; it is not required if you already have suitable, cleared audio.
Use licensed audio carefully
If you use someone else’s recordings, confirm that the license explicitly allows continuous livestreaming and keeping or replaying an archive. Save the license and source information. Even licensed audio can be interrupted by YouTube’s Content ID system unless the rights owner adds your channel to its allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. YouTube advises: “If your live stream stops, check your YouTube Studio dashboard for strikes.”

Make the mix feel intentional
Set rain as the main sound and keep traffic quieter and farther back; adjust by listening on headphones and ordinary speakers. Check transitions between any loops for abrupt changes in loudness, tone, or stereo position. Do not assume that repeating a recording is automatically a problem or automatically safe for monetization: the sound still needs to be rights-cleared, and the finished work should offer original, authentic value rather than feel generic.
3. Build a simple scene in OBS
OBS Studio is a free encoder that can be used without a watermark. Add a still image or low-motion visual you created or have permission to use, then add your continuous audio source. Keep the scene simple enough to run reliably, but make the visual and soundscape distinctive if you may seek monetization. OBS Project’s help portal documents the software.

- Create a scene: In OBS, add an image or video source for your visual. Use original or licensed artwork and footage.
- Add audio: Add your rain-and-traffic mix as a media or audio input source, depending on how you have prepared it. Confirm that the source continues playing through the intended duration and that the meters show audio.
- Check the output: Listen to the scene through OBS and verify that the rain is not clipping and the traffic is audible but distant. Keep the mix consistent across the start and any loop point.
- Save a local recording plan: If you need a copy of the broadcast, configure and test local recording separately rather than relying on YouTube’s replay.
4. Create the YouTube live broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio: Create a live broadcast in YouTube Studio and configure its title, visibility, and other event details.
- Copy the ingest details: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share or publish it.
- Use a supported protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select it where available in the encoder’s server or service configuration.
- Start with the chosen event: Start streaming from OBS, then check the YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public or relying on it.
Exact OBS menu labels can vary by version and by whether you connect an account or enter a stream key manually. Use the current OBS and YouTube interfaces, and verify that the broadcast preview is receiving the intended scene before launch.
5. Choose a bitrate your connection can hold
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations list 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. It recommends CBR encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that your particular connection or computer can sustain a stream at those settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

| Video setting | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | Requires less upload capacity and encoder headroom than the listed 1080p setting; offers less visual detail. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | Offers more visual detail, but needs a stable connection and more encoding capacity at the recommended bitrate. |
A static or slow-moving ambience visual may not need high motion settings, but do not lower or raise bitrate solely on that assumption. Test your actual scene and watch the stream health. OBS notes that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot maintain. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting explains the symptom.
6. Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a speed test and make sure the available upload capacity is comfortably above the configured stream bitrate, allowing headroom for normal network variation and other devices.
- Test the complete scene, including representative audio, visual movement, and any loop transitions.
- Watch the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and check OBS for dropped frames or encoder warnings.
- Listen to the broadcast from a separate device or account to catch muted audio, clipping, or an incorrect mix that may not be obvious from the local preview.
- Only treat the setup as ready after a sufficiently long test to expose playback, network, and loop problems that a brief preview might miss.
7. Plan for interruptions and replay archives
Keep a copy outside YouTube
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Automatic archive eligibility is not a guarantee that a particular stream will save successfully. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

A 24/7 broadcast necessarily exceeds that 12-hour threshold. If a replay matters, preserve the source audio and visual locally and plan how to create shorter broadcast segments or otherwise make recordings outside YouTube. Check the current Live Control Room behavior for your channel rather than treating a continuous stream’s replay as your only copy.
Decide how you will recover
A stream can stop because of a connection failure, encoder problem, or rights issue. Monitor stream health and YouTube Studio alerts; if a live stream stops, check the dashboard for strikes before restarting. For a continuous channel, decide in advance who will notice an outage and how the broadcast will be restarted. Do not assume that uninterrupted playback or a successful archive is guaranteed by keeping OBS open.

8. Understand the monetization distinction
Copyright compliance and monetization eligibility are separate. YouTube’s policy says monetized work should be original and authentic and should not be generic, repetitive, or mass-produced. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it clarified its existing policy to include repetitive or mass-produced content and renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content.” A license for a sound recording, or the fact that a stream runs continuously, does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
