First identify what “ends” means: a prerecorded file reaching its end, an input disconnecting, an output error, or FFmpeg exiting. Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat a finite file, protocol-specific reconnect options for supported input disconnections, FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery for selected output failures, or a process supervisor such as systemd to relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. These fixes work at different layers; restarting FFmpeg locally does not by itself confirm that YouTube has resumed the broadcast.
Identify what stopped
Check FFmpeg’s last log lines and the source type before changing the command. A file that reaches EOF normally is not a crashed process. Likewise, an input disconnect, a failed publishing output, and a process exit call for different recovery mechanisms.
- File EOF: the prerecorded ambience recording finished playing.
- Input disconnect: a live or network source stopped delivering data.
- Output failure: FFmpeg is running, but publishing to YouTube or another network destination encountered a temporary problem.
- Process exit: FFmpeg itself stopped, either cleanly or after an error.
Choose the recovery method for the failure
| What happened | Use | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| A finite file reached EOF | -stream_loop -1 on that input |
It does not restart a crashed FFmpeg process. |
| A supported network input disconnected | Protocol-specific reconnect options | They are not universal options for every input and do not relaunch an exited process. |
| A temporary output failure occurred while FFmpeg remains running | FIFO pseudo-muxer recovery options | They cannot repair persistent configuration, key, input, or network-path errors. |
| FFmpeg exited | External process supervision, such as systemd on Linux | Starting FFmpeg does not prove YouTube resumed the broadcast. |
Loop a prerecorded ambience file
If your source is a finite recording and you want it to repeat, use FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1. The option means an input is looped indefinitely; it prevents that input from ending normally, but it is not a crash-restart mechanism. See the FFmpeg advanced options documentation.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i ambience.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
In this example, -stream_loop -1 appears before the file’s -i. FFmpeg options can apply to the next input or output, so put input options in the correct position for the file they are meant to affect. This sample assumes the file’s streams are suitable for copying into the selected output; if they are not, choose compatible encoding settings rather than assuming stream copy will work.

Replace the sample URL and key with the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. Confirm the exact syntax and behavior with your installed FFmpeg build; option availability and documentation can vary by version.
Reconnect a network input
If FFmpeg reads from a network source rather than a local file, reconnect behavior depends on the input protocol. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation distinguishes reconnect, which reconnects after a disconnection before EOF, from reconnect_at_eof, which treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection—described as useful for live or endless streams. The documentation also lists controls for network errors, HTTP errors, retry counts, and delay limits. These are protocol options, not universal switches for every source. Check the FFmpeg protocol documentation and your installed version for options that apply to your input.

Do not use input reconnection as a substitute for relaunching FFmpeg when the process has already exited. Nor does a reconnect option intended for an input automatically repair a failed publishing output.
Recover from a temporary output failure
When FFmpeg is still running but its output connection has a temporary failure, the FFmpeg FIFO pseudo-muxer provides recovery options such as attempt_recovery and a recovery wait. Its documentation includes an example aimed at continuing real-time processing and retrying a network output after a temporary failure. Review the FIFO pseudo-muxer documentation for the precise options and syntax supported by your build.

Recovery may involve dropped or delayed packets depending on configuration. It cannot resolve a persistently invalid command, incorrect stream key, unavailable input, or broken network path. If the underlying fault remains, retries alone will not restore a healthy stream.
Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd
On Linux, run FFmpeg as the main process of a systemd service rather than hiding it in an unmanaged background shell. A unit can relaunch FFmpeg after qualifying failures and record output in the journal. For example, adapt this unit to your own paths, command, and account:

- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-ambience.service. Replace the user, paths, FFmpeg command, ingest address, and stream key with your actual values. Protect the unit file because it contains the key. - Load the unit and start it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ambience.service. - Check whether systemd considers it active with
sudo systemctl status youtube-ambience.service. - Read recent service output with
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ambience.service -n 100 --no-pager; follow new output withsudo journalctl -u youtube-ambience.service -f.
Restart=on-failure restarts qualifying failures, but not a clean FFmpeg exit. Use Restart=always if a clean exit should also trigger a relaunch, and retain a deliberate RestartSec= delay to avoid an immediate rapid restart loop. A repeatedly failing service may simply be relaunching the same bad command or authentication setup; use the logs to find the cause. See the practical systemd service guidance for restart behavior and unit configuration.
Verify the YouTube broadcast after recovery
A systemd service reporting that FFmpeg started establishes only that the local process was launched. It does not establish that YouTube resumed the same broadcast, preserved continuity, or made the stream publicly live. After a restart or recovery attempt, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. If the preview does not return or health remains poor, inspect both FFmpeg’s logs and the stream state in YouTube rather than treating a running process as proof of success.

Troubleshoot common restart problems
- The file plays once and stops: confirm that
-stream_loop -1is before the relevant file’s-i; confirm you are using the intended local input. - FFmpeg stays running but the source is gone: determine whether the source protocol supports the reconnect options you configured. Reconnect settings for one protocol should not be assumed to work with another.
- The output drops but FFmpeg does not exit: process supervision will not help while the process remains alive. Consider FIFO output recovery for a temporary supported output failure, and diagnose persistent connectivity or configuration errors.
- The service does not restart after FFmpeg exits cleanly: that is expected with
Restart=on-failure; chooseRestart=alwaysif clean exits should relaunch. - The service repeatedly restarts: inspect
journalctlfor an invalid command, inaccessible input, bad key, or other persistent error. A restart policy cannot correct the cause. - FFmpeg is active but YouTube is not live: check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Local service status is not confirmation of a restored YouTube broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
