Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() to render and capture the page, then upload the resulting image with Cloudinary’s Node.js SDK. For the simplest workflow, save the screenshot to a file and call cloudinary.uploader.upload(). If you do not need a temporary file, send screenshot bytes through cloudinary.uploader.upload_stream(). Keep Cloudinary’s API secret on the server.
What you need
- A Node.js project with Puppeteer and the Cloudinary Node.js SDK installed.
- A Cloudinary account’s cloud name, API key, and API secret, configured as server-side environment variables.
- The URL you want to capture. If this code will accept URLs from users, validate or allowlist destinations and apply network controls to reduce server-side request risks.
The examples below use the Cloudinary SDK’s v2-style API. Check the current Cloudinary Node.js SDK documentation for installation and module syntax appropriate to your project.
Capture a page and upload the image file
This version writes a PNG locally and uploads its path. It is easy to inspect or reuse the image before uploading.

Launch a browser, navigate to the target page, and capture it with
page.screenshot(). -
Upload the saved path with
cloudinary.uploader.upload(), then use the returnedsecure_urland asset metadata.

Choose a navigation wait condition for the site
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' waits for network activity to settle according to Puppeteer’s navigation condition, but it does not guarantee that every delayed image, animation, or client-rendered element is ready. Sites that maintain long-running network requests may also make a network-idle condition unsuitable. Validate the condition against the page being captured; when needed, wait for a known selector or an explicit delay before taking the screenshot.

Capture an element instead of the whole page
When the artifact should be one component—such as a chart or card—locate it and call ElementHandle.screenshot() rather than capturing the page. The resulting file can be passed to the same Cloudinary upload call.

Upload screenshot bytes without a temporary file
page.screenshot() returns image bytes when called without a path. Convert those bytes to a Node.js Buffer and end Cloudinary’s upload stream with it:

Which capture and upload path should you use?

Keep credentials and browser work on the server
Do not put api_secret in browser-side JavaScript or ship it to users. Cloudinary’s upload documentation says the API secret must remain private. Keep authenticated uploads on the server, or use a correctly configured unsigned upload preset if that is appropriate for your application’s security and upload policy.
In a production service, close the browser in a finally block as in the example. That way, navigation, screenshot, or upload errors do not skip browser cleanup.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank or missing page content
- Check that navigation completed and that the URL is correct.
- Do not assume
networkidle2means all visual content is ready. Wait for a page-specific selector or another condition that reflects when the content you need has rendered. - For an element capture, confirm the selector matches an element and that it is visible before taking the screenshot.
Navigation never reaches the chosen wait condition
Some pages keep network requests open or continue making requests in the background. Try a different navigation condition suited to that site, then wait explicitly for the content required in the image. No single wait option is reliable for every page.
Cloudinary rejects the upload
- Verify the server environment variables for cloud name, API key, and API secret are present and belong to the intended Cloudinary account.
- Check that the SDK configuration runs before the upload call and that the screenshot file exists at the path supplied to
upload(). - For stream uploads, propagate the callback error and confirm that the screenshot bytes are passed to
stream.end().
The browser process remains after a failed request
Put browser shutdown in a finally block and close the browser only if launch succeeded. This covers failures during navigation, capture, or upload.
