You can use a Linux VPS as the always-on host for a YouTube encoder stream: prepare rain audio and visuals you have the rights to use, connect an encoder to YouTube over RTMPS, and supervise the encoder and stream health. This is a practical setup guide, not a guarantee that one broadcast or VPS will stay online indefinitely.
Check that your YouTube channel can go live
Before configuring a server, confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. YouTube lists these as prerequisites for enabling live streaming and supports encoder-based broadcasts. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and available ways to stream.
Prepare rain audio and visuals you are allowed to use
Use recordings and visuals you created or have permission to broadcast. A sound may seem ambient or commonplace, but that does not make a recording automatically free of copyright claims. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a third-party match remains unresolved, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance before using third-party material.
Configure the Linux VPS encoder and YouTube connection
Use a sustained connection, not just a good speed test
The VPS must be able to send the encoded stream continuously at its chosen bitrate. Select settings your server’s outbound connection can sustain, allowing room for network variation. Check the provider’s transfer limits and outbound terms before relying on a VPS for an always-on broadcast; no particular provider, plan, bandwidth allowance, or price is established here.

Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3. Resolution and bitrate should be selected together according to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and what the VPS can sustain. Connect over RTMPS
RTMPS tunnels RTMP through SSL. Use the RTMPS protocol with a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint; the connection uses port 443. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s live control room into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or share it in screenshots. Google documents the transport details in its RTMPS ingestion guide.

The exact FFmpeg or OBS configuration depends on the media files, software version, and chosen resolution and bitrate. Validate those inputs and the command or encoder settings against the installed version rather than treating a generic command as guaranteed to work on every VPS.
Launch carefully and monitor the stream
- In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the live stream and copy its current ingest URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder on the VPS with those values and the selected video and audio settings.
- Run a preflight stream with audio and moving video similar to the intended rain program. Confirm the picture, sound, and stream-health status before relying on it unattended. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- After launch, check both the encoder process on the VPS and the stream-health information in YouTube Studio. A healthy process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Troubleshoot interruptions and poor stream health
- Stream does not start: Recheck that live streaming is enabled for the channel, then verify the ingest URL and stream key in the encoder. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Connection or stream-health warnings: Check the VPS’s sustained outbound connection and whether the configured bitrate is supportable. Confirm RTMPS is selected with a valid endpoint and port 443.
- Dropped frames: OBS notes that an increasing dropped-frame count can indicate an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce demands on the connection or investigate the VPS network path, then test again. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
- Stream is interrupted after a content match: Review the audio and visuals for third-party material and resolve the rights issue. If the material is licensed, check whether the owner needs to allowlist the channel in Content ID.
- Encoder stops on an unattended server: Check the process, server logs, and outbound network. Restarting a failed encoder requires a process-supervision setup on the VPS; its behavior and reliability depend on the host and configuration.
What 24/7 means in practice
YouTube’s cited guidance covers account access, encoder settings, and copyright handling, but it does not establish a maximum duration for a single broadcast or promise indefinite uptime. Do not assume that a live stream, archived replay, or VPS will remain uninterrupted. Plan to monitor the host and YouTube dashboard, and treat recovery as something your hosting and process-supervision setup must handle.
