You can run a YouTube lofi stream from a Mac mini by preparing music and visuals you have the rights to use, sending them through an encoder such as OBS Studio, and connecting that encoder to YouTube Studio with your stream URL and key. For a stream to stay live around the clock, the Mac mini, encoder, power and internet connection must keep working; this setup cannot guarantee uninterrupted uptime. YouTube also automatically archives streams under 12 hours, so plan breaks if you need dependable replays.
Before you set up the stream: prepare music and visuals
Start with the material, not the encoder. Have a visual scene or video loop and music that can play continuously in your chosen production workflow. This guide does not establish a tested OBS-specific recipe for looping media, so check the current OBS documentation for the controls that match your source type and version: OBS Knowledge Base.
Confirm you have the rights to livestream the music
You need the necessary rights for live use worldwide, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a stream. A license alone may not prevent a disruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its allowlist. Check the license for live use, territories, archived-video use, monetization terms and term length, and keep a copy of the grant. A “royalty-free” label alone does not establish permission for every use. See YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions and copyright guidance for live streams.
Activate YouTube Live and create the stream

Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room.

Create a stream for the broadcast, or reuse existing stream settings if your channel is already configured. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains the available setup: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Copy the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in your scene, screenshots or public posts. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

If this is your channel’s first livestream, activate it ahead of launch. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Configure OBS on the Mac mini
Install a current version of OBS Studio from its official source and consult its documentation for current macOS instructions. The OBS Knowledge Base links to setup, streaming, troubleshooting and audio resources; no particular OBS version, macOS release or Mac mini model is established here as a tested unattended-stream configuration.

In OBS, create a scene for the lofi broadcast and add the visual and audio sources you intend to use. Configure their playback so the content can continue or restart as needed; verify the behavior in a rehearsal rather than assuming a source will loop indefinitely.

Open OBS streaming settings. Select YouTube if the available service integration suits your setup, or enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key as directed by OBS and YouTube.

Choose output settings that the Mac and your actual upload connection can sustain. For a simple, static or lightly animated lofi scene, 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point, not a requirement. Reduce the resolution or frame rate if testing shows instability.

Run a private or unlisted rehearsal with the same audio, visuals and settings you plan to use. Check that audio is audible and continuous, visuals behave as intended, and YouTube receives a healthy preview.

Choose bitrate and stream settings you can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds. Its 1080p30 H.264 entry separately lists a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate.

These figures are encoder video bitrates, not a promise that an internet service with the same upload speed will be reliable. Test upload capacity at the Mac mini’s location and at the time you plan to stream. Allow headroom for network overhead and other household use. Use YouTube’s guidance as a starting point, then test the complete stream and monitor its health; YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers.
Start the broadcast and plan for continuity

Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room for a healthy incoming preview and stream-health messages.

Complete YouTube’s Go Live step if the selected stream mode requires it. Confirm the public stream is visible from a separate device before leaving the setup unattended.

Keep the Mac mini awake and connected to power and the network. A wired Ethernet connection, UPS, backup internet, remote monitoring or automatic relaunch can help address particular risks, but none is a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Test the full loop overnight before presenting the station as 24/7. Check for stalled playback, audio gaps, network drops, Mac sleep or restart, and any YouTube warnings. A stream can be interrupted by home power or internet, software, YouTube, account status or rights enforcement.

The Mac mini is the local encoder in this setup: if it or its connection stops, the stream can stop too. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications describe current hardware, but do not establish a model-specific 24/7 streaming guarantee.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a longer continuous broadcast becoming one automatic replay. If archived sessions matter, schedule an end and restart before the limit, verify the resulting archive in Studio, and consider preserving a local recording if your encoder workflow supports it. A restart creates a break and a new live session, so plan how viewers will find the next stream.
Understand monetization and reused-content limits
A lofi loop is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and expect original, authentic content; generic, repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. Eligibility depends on the channel and its content, not just the fact that a stream is live. Originality in the music, visuals, curation and presentation may matter, but no format can guarantee acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

You cannot start your first stream: Live activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it before your planned launch and confirm YouTube Studio shows the channel is ready.

YouTube does not receive the encoder: Check that OBS is using the correct stream URL and current key. If you replaced an exposed key, update it in OBS as well.

The stream health warning appears or the broadcast disconnects: Test upload speed at the streaming location, reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the settings, and check whether other network traffic is competing for capacity. Monitor the Control Room during a representative rehearsal.

The picture or sound freezes while OBS appears connected: Check source playback and audio routing in OBS, then rehearse long enough to verify the loop restarts as intended. The encoder being connected does not prove the media sources are still playing.

YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Review Studio notifications and the stream’s content. Confirm live and archived-use rights; if the music is licensed, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted.

No automatic replay appears after a long session: The automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours. For replayable sessions, end and restart before that threshold and check the archive in Studio.
