Use Cypress’s cy.screenshot() to save a screenshot at a deliberate point in a test, or let cypress run capture one automatically after a test fails. Those captures help with debugging; catching unintended visual changes requires a separate image-comparison integration because Cypress does not compare screenshots by itself. The same workflow applies to an Indian startup’s app: make the tested state and rendering conditions repeatable, then review every visual difference before approving a new baseline.

What Cypress screenshot tests do—and do not do

A screenshot can serve two different purposes:

  • Debugging capture: save an image of the page or an element so a developer can inspect what the app looked like at a particular point, especially after a failure.
  • Visual regression check: compare a newly captured image with an approved baseline and flag differences for review.

Cypress provides screenshot capture, but Cypress does not perform image comparison itself. To detect visual changes, pair Cypress with a comparison plugin or a hosted visual-testing service. A changed image is a review signal, not proof of a defect: a team member needs to decide whether the change is intended.

Add a deliberate screenshot to a Cypress test

Call cy.screenshot() after the page has reached the state you want to inspect. For example, this test waits for the checkout summary before capturing it:

describe('checkout screenshots', () => {
  it('captures the ready checkout summary', () => {
    cy.visit('/checkout')
    cy.contains('Order summary').should('be.visible')
    cy.screenshot('checkout-ready')
  })
})

The example assumes your application serves /checkout and renders an “Order summary” label. Adapt those selectors and conditions to your app. Cypress’s screenshot command is asynchronous; the API documentation says capture takes around 100 ms, so do not use an immediate screenshot as a substitute for waiting for the target state to settle. See the cy.screenshot() API reference.

Capture only an element

For a focused snapshot, call the command on the element you want to inspect:

cy.get('.order-summary').screenshot('order-summary')

Use an element capture when the component is the unit you need to review. Use a page or full-page capture when the surrounding layout is part of what the test should cover.

Know where files go and what happens on failure

The documented default screenshots folder is cypress/screenshots; a project can change it in Cypress configuration. During cypress run, Cypress captures a screenshot after a test failure by default unless that behavior has been disabled. Manual captures are available in interactive and run modes, including CI. The Cypress screenshots and videos guide explains capture behavior, while the configuration reference documents the folder setting.

Choose how to compare screenshots with a baseline

If you only need failure evidence, Cypress captures and your CI provider’s artifact storage may be enough. Cypress Cloud is described as a companion service for storing and sharing artifacts; artifact sharing is not the same as image comparison. If your goal is to catch unintended appearance changes, add an integration that compares current captures against approved baselines.

Cypress’s visual-testing guide describes both open-source plugins for local or CI comparison and hosted options, including Sauce Labs Visual and SmartBear VisualTest. It does not establish current prices, plan limits, regional availability, or partner availability for those vendors; verify those details with the providers before choosing.

  • Local or CI comparison: consider whether the team wants comparison controlled within its own test workflow.
  • Hosted review workflow: check whether the service includes the dashboard, baseline approval, masking, or other review features the team needs.
  • Artifact storage: confirm that a selected product actually compares images; storing and sharing screenshots alone does not provide visual regression checks.
  • Review workload: consider how many snapshots the team can inspect and maintain, and who owns each checkpoint.

For a visual-testing service option, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its clean captures remove consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is a capture service, not a claim that its output automatically replaces a baseline-comparison workflow.

Make visual comparisons repeatable

A useful comparison depends on keeping the page state and rendering conditions consistent. Otherwise, routine differences in data or rendering can create noisy diffs that cost time to investigate.

  • Wait on visible state: assert that the expected heading, component, or status is visible instead of capturing immediately after navigation or an action.
  • Stabilize network data: use cy.intercept() with fixtures when an API response changes between runs, and wait for the relevant request before capture.
  • Keep rendering conditions aligned: use the same browser version, operating system, fonts, display scaling, and fixed viewport for baseline and comparison runs where possible. These conditions can affect rendered pixels.
  • Control motion deliberately: disable or wait for relevant animations where appropriate. Cypress notes that action-command animation settings do not prevent an unrelated animation from appearing mid-frame in a screenshot.
  • Constrain dynamic regions narrowly: hide or mask only specific unavoidable areas, such as a third-party widget. Avoid loosening a whole-page comparison threshold as the first response to noise.
  • Choose checkpoints with care: cover key pages, states, and shared components. A component or element snapshot can localize ownership; a page snapshot is appropriate when overall layout matters.

Review failures and maintain approved baselines

  1. Inspect the image diff and identify what changed, rather than treating every difference as a bug.
  2. Check whether the change was an intentional design or content update. If it was, review it and then approve the new baseline through your chosen comparison tool.
  3. If the change was not intended, fix the app or stabilize the test data and rendering conditions before updating any baseline.
  4. Keep the snapshot set small enough that the team can meaningfully review each change, and assign clear ownership for important pages or components.

Blindly accepting every new image can hide regressions; retaining every possible snapshot can overwhelm the review process. Deliberate checkpoints make it more practical to inspect what matters.

What is specific to an Indian startup?

The reviewed Cypress documentation describes a general workflow and does not establish a separate India-specific configuration. A team’s location alone does not change how cy.screenshot() works. Before adopting a comparison integration, assess your own CI environment and supported browsers, the localization states you test (including dates and currencies), data privacy requirements, and the provider’s service terms. Those choices depend on the company and deployment, not on Cypress screenshot capture itself.

Troubleshooting common screenshot-test problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Screenshot shows a loading state or incomplete content Capture ran before the UI or relevant request finished. Wait for an observable element or status, and intercept and wait for required requests when data needs to be deterministic.
Images differ between otherwise identical runs Rendering environment, viewport, fonts, display scaling, API data, or animation timing changed. Align browser and viewport settings, stabilize responses, and control relevant motion before changing comparison tolerances.
Unrelated content causes visual diffs A dynamic third-party area such as an ad or widget changes independently. Mask or hide only that specific region where the integration permits it; keep the rest of the page under meaningful comparison.
No screenshot appears after a failed test The test may not be running through cypress run, or failure screenshot behavior may have been disabled or its output folder changed. Check the run mode and Cypress configuration, including the screenshots folder and failure-capture setting.
A screenshot is present, but no regression result is produced Capture alone does not compare an image with a baseline. Add and configure a visual-comparison integration, then establish its baseline and review workflow.
A diff appears after an intentional UI update The baseline still represents the prior approved appearance. Review the change and approve a replacement baseline only after confirming the update is intended.
