Which free Playwright screenshot tool should you choose?
The right choice depends on where you want baselines to live and how much browser-and-viewport coverage you need. Playwright’s own screenshot assertions are the simplest no-extra-service option. Hosted tools add cloud review workflows, but their quotas and restrictions affect how much testing you can do without paying.
| Option | Published free allowance | Browser coverage noted | Baseline and review workflow | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright screenshot assertions | No separate visual-testing service allowance; the workflow uses Playwright screenshot assertions and project reference images. | Not a hosted-plan limit; use the browsers configured for your Playwright project. | Reference snapshots live with the project and are reviewed and updated deliberately. | Freelancers who want control and can review image changes in their repository workflow. |
| Chromatic | Chromatic’s pricing page lists Free at $0/month with 5,000 billed snapshots, unlimited projects, and unlimited users (accessed 2026; verify current terms). | Chrome testing; Chromatic’s Playwright documentation says Chrome is required for snapshotting. | Cloud snapshots and visual review connected to Git. Its Playwright workflow uploads a generated Storybook archive; Chromatic does not directly run the Playwright tests. | Projects where a shared hosted review interface is worth the integration and Chrome restriction. |
| Percy (BrowserStack) | BrowserStack’s Percy documentation lists 5,000 free monthly screenshots, with unlimited users and projects (accessed 2026; verify current terms). | Count browser and responsive-width combinations; confirm current browser availability and plan terms. | Hosted screenshot comparison workflow. | Projects whose expected screenshot count fits the allowance after permutations are counted. |
| Argos | The reviewed GitHub Marketplace listing says users can start for free but does not state an exact free monthly quota or eligibility rules. | Not stated in the reviewed listing. | Playwright support, baseline comparisons, and pull-request diffs are described by the listing and Argos’s product site. | Freelancers who want PR review and are willing to verify the actual free terms before relying on them long-term. |
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, rather than a visual-regression baseline and diff service. It is the first alternative to try when the problem is obtaining clean page captures for your workflow: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. See ScreenshotNeo. It does not replace the baseline comparison step described below.
How to compare screenshots with Playwright alone
Playwright’s visual comparison workflow captures a page and compares the rendered result with an expected snapshot. When a visual change is intended, review the difference and deliberately update the expected image; do not blindly accept every changed baseline.
Install and configure the test project
In an existing Playwright project, use the test runner’s screenshot assertion. A typical test looks like this:
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png', { fullPage: true });
});
Replace the local URL with the page under test. The first run creates a reference snapshot; subsequent runs compare the rendered page with it and report visual differences. Keep the generated snapshot in version control so the baseline is reviewable alongside the test. Use the Playwright documentation for the exact setup and configuration options for your installed version.
Review and update a baseline safely
- Run the test in the same environment you intend to use for ongoing comparisons. Differences in fonts, browser version, operating system, data, or animation state can create changes unrelated to the code you meant to test.
- Inspect the reported image diff. Confirm whether it represents an intended design change, a defect, or unstable rendering.
- If the change is intended, update the expected snapshot using Playwright’s snapshot-update workflow for your test command, then review and commit the changed image with the code.
- Run the test again without update mode. A passing comparison verifies that the current rendering matches the newly reviewed baseline.
For repeatability, use stable test data and make the page reach a predictable state before capture. If animation or asynchronous content changes between runs, wait for the relevant content or disable the source of nondeterminism in the test environment rather than accepting noisy diffs.
How to estimate hosted-tool free usage
Do not equate “screenshots” or “snapshots” with pages. Hosted services can count a rendering separately for each browser and responsive width. Percy documents its unit as one page or component rendered for an individual browser and responsive width: two pages across two browsers and three widths total 12 screenshots.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
Use this estimate before choosing a plan:
Monthly renderings = pages or components × browser choices × viewport widths × runs per month.
For example, testing 8 pages at 2 browser choices and 3 widths creates 48 renderings per run; running that suite 20 times in a month creates 960 renderings, before any additional branches or reruns. This is a planning calculation, not a prediction of a vendor’s billing behavior beyond its documented counting unit. Confirm what the vendor counts as a billed snapshot or screenshot.
- Chromatic: The published free plan lists 5,000 billed snapshots, but its Playwright documentation requires Chrome for snapshotting. Confirm that its archive-based integration fits your project.
- Percy: Its published free plan lists 5,000 monthly screenshots. Multiply page/component count by browser and width combinations, not just by the number of URLs.
- Argos: Treat “start for free” as an offer to investigate, not a confirmed recurring quota; the reviewed listing does not specify the amount or eligibility.
All quoted hosted-plan figures are vendor-published terms accessed in 2026 and can change. The available published information does not establish India-specific INR pricing, GST, payment options, or regional service availability. Check the current checkout and terms rather than converting a dollar figure into an assumed Indian charge.

What to check before adopting a tool
- Baseline control: Decide whether you want images reviewed and stored through your repository, or cloud-managed snapshots and a shared review interface.
- Required browsers: Confirm that the free plan supports the browser coverage the project actually needs. Chromatic’s documented free tier is Chrome testing, and its Playwright snapshot workflow requires Chrome.
- Pull-request workflow: Check how results reach your existing Git and CI process. Chromatic describes Git-linked snapshots and cloud review; Argos describes diffs in pull requests. Confirm setup details for your repository and CI.
- Maintenance effort: Budget time to review legitimate design changes and reduce noise from unstable rendering. A large matrix of browsers and widths can consume hosted quotas quickly and increases review work.
- India checkout details: Before committing, verify the displayed currency, payment methods, applicable tax, and availability for your account in India with the vendor.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; each response includes page-verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These captures do not themselves create or compare Playwright reference baselines.

The test reports differences on every run
Look for changing content, animations, fonts, or timing. Make the test data and page state deterministic, wait for the content that matters, and capture at a consistent point. Do not update the baseline until you know the diff is intended.

A hosted allowance runs out earlier than expected
Recalculate using page or component count, browsers, widths, and monthly runs. Percy’s documented example demonstrates that browser and responsive-width combinations multiply the screenshot count. Check the current vendor definition of a billed unit and reduce unnecessary permutations if appropriate.
Chromatic does not capture the expected Playwright run
Check its Playwright integration model: the documented flow uses a generated Storybook archive and Chrome for snapshotting, rather than Chromatic directly running Playwright tests. Verify the project’s Storybook and browser setup against the current Chromatic documentation.
