The most reliable way to test screenshots across Chrome and Firefox is to capture the same deterministic page state in both browsers and compare each capture with its own approved baseline. Do not use Chrome’s screenshot as Firefox’s expected image: browser rendering can differ. For a code-first workflow, Playwright Test can generate and compare screenshot baselines; hosted options such as Chromatic and BrowserStack Percy offer browser-specific visual review workflows.

Use a separate baseline for each browser

A cross-browser visual test should answer two questions: did the page change in Chrome, and did it change in Firefox? Keep the accepted reference for each browser separate, then compare each new capture only with the matching reference. Otherwise, normal rendering differences between browsers can look like regressions—or a real change in one browser can be obscured by comparing against the other browser’s image.

For useful comparisons, reproduce the capture conditions as closely as possible between baseline creation and later test runs. Record the browser project and version, operating system, viewport, device scale factor, and headless or headed mode. Rendering can also vary with settings, hardware, and power source, so run the tests in the same environment used to establish the baselines whenever practical.

Set up repeatable screenshot tests with Playwright

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion creates a reference screenshot on its first run and compares later runs against it. Define Chrome and Firefox as separate projects so Playwright can keep the snapshots associated with the browser project. The example below captures one page state in both projects.

1. Install Playwright Test and browser binaries

In a JavaScript project, install the test runner and its browser binaries:

npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install chromium firefox

2. Configure Chrome and Firefox projects

Create playwright.config.js. Set the viewport and device scale factor explicitly; use the same values when generating and checking baselines.

Playwright’s chromium project uses its Chromium browser build; it is commonly used for Chrome-family coverage, but it is not by itself a guarantee that every installed Google Chrome version has been tested. If the exact installed Chrome product and version are part of your requirement, configure and record that browser explicitly rather than assuming the browser names are interchangeable.

3. Capture a deterministic page state

Create tests/homepage.spec.js. Replace the example URL and page readiness condition with the route and stable signal for your application. Avoid capturing while data, fonts, images, or animations are still changing.

  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {
    fullPage: true,

});

Run the test in both configured projects:

npx playwright test

On the first run, Playwright writes reference snapshots. Review those images and commit accepted baselines with the test code. On later runs, Playwright compares the newly captured output with the corresponding reference and reports visual differences. Keep the generated snapshots under version control so reviewers can see intentional visual changes alongside code changes.

Make captures stable without hiding meaningful changes

A screenshot test is only useful if it distinguishes product changes from incidental motion. Start by stabilizing the page state, then filter only content that genuinely cannot be made deterministic.

  • MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
  • KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
  • INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
  • Use stable data: fixture or test data avoids changes caused by live records, rotating promotions, or user-specific content.
  • Wait for a meaningful ready condition: prefer a visible component or application-ready signal over an arbitrary short delay. Network idle can help, but pages with polling or long-lived requests may never reach it.
  • Control motion: disable animations for the capture or use a test stylesheet to hide or neutralize volatile elements. Playwright supports a custom stylesheet option for filtering dynamic content.
  • Choose the capture scope deliberately: use a full-page screenshot for page-level layout regressions and targeted element screenshots when a specific component is the risk. Broad captures provide context but can create more unrelated diffs.
  • Set tolerances conservatively: Playwright supports image-difference thresholds. A tolerance can absorb insignificant rendering noise, but an overly loose threshold can conceal real regressions. Treat changes to thresholds as test policy, not a quick way to make failures disappear.

Keep the browser identity in the project or snapshot naming scheme. With multiple Playwright projects, browser or platform information can be included in snapshot filenames, helping prevent Chrome and Firefox references from overwriting one another.

ScreenshotNeo One GET request can return a website screenshot or PDF; it also provides an MCP server for AI agents. Its clean-shot handling removes supported consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and failed or non-page results are not billed. Try it first when you need an API or agent-driven way to capture pages. It is not a replacement for browser-specific baselines and visual diffs.
Playwright Test Local screenshot assertions, image comparison, configurable matching, and project-specific snapshots. Teams already using Playwright that want repository-managed baselines and code-first test runs.
Chromatic Hosted visual tests and documented browser coverage including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, with browser-specific baselines and review. Teams seeking hosted review and a component or story-oriented workflow.
BrowserStack Percy Hosted cross-browser snapshots, browser-specific diffs, and browser/OS configuration. Its documentation says each browser screenshot counts separately toward monthly usage. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one request. This is useful for obtaining a clean page image without setting up browser automation, but a single API capture does not replace testing the same state in both Chrome and Firefox or maintaining per-browser visual baselines.

cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Troubleshoot failing screenshot comparisons

  • Every run produces a diff: check that the browser project, browser version, operating system, viewport, scale factor, and capture mode match the baseline environment. Then look for animations, timestamps, live data, or other changing content.
  • Firefox fails while Chrome passes: inspect Firefox’s own baseline and diff rather than comparing its output with Chrome’s. Check the page state and browser-specific layout or font behavior before accepting a new reference.
  • The page never reaches network idle: persistent polling, analytics, or streaming requests may prevent that condition. Wait for a stable application signal or a specific visible element instead.
  • A snapshot is unexpectedly missing or replaced: verify that the test is running under the expected project and inspect the snapshot path for browser-specific project identity. Do not copy one browser’s baseline over the other as a shortcut.
  • A small threshold change makes failures disappear: inspect the diff first. Increasing tolerance can reduce noise, but it can also mask a genuine visual regression.
  • First run fails because no baseline exists: generate snapshots intentionally, review the resulting images for both browsers, and commit only approved references. A newly generated baseline is not automatically evidence that the output is correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Chrome and Firefox screenshots be pixel-identical?

No. The test should compare each browser’s output with its own accepted baseline; expected rendering differences between browsers are not automatically regressions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Playwright’s Chromium project always test Google Chrome?

No. Chromium is the browser build used by that project by default. If you require a particular installed Chrome product or version, configure and record it explicitly.

Can an API screenshot replace a Chrome-and-Firefox visual regression test?

No. An API capture can return a page image, but cross-browser regression testing requires browser-specific captures and references.
