If a Puppeteer screenshot misses content that appears only after scrolling, trigger the page’s scroll behavior before capturing, wait for the specific content to load, and verify it is visible. fullPage: true expands the capture to the full document; it is not documented as a command to load content that has not rendered yet.

Why a full-page screenshot can still miss content

Some pages load images or other content when a section approaches the viewport. A screenshot’s capture extent and a site’s loading behavior are separate concerns: capturing the full document does not itself guarantee that scroll-triggered content has been requested or rendered. Puppeteer documents fullPage as a screenshot option, not as a way to trigger loading. See the Puppeteer screenshot options.

The fix is to reproduce the interaction that prompts the page to load the content, wait for a meaningful readiness signal, confirm the target is present and visible, and then capture. The details depend on the page: lazy images, application-rendered sections, and content inside a nested scroll area may need different triggers.

Diagnose what is missing before changing the wait

  • Not in the DOM: the page may not have triggered or completed the request or rendering step that creates the content.
  • In the DOM but hidden: check the element’s visibility and the page state that controls it.
  • Present and visible, but outside the captured area: check whether you need a full-page capture or a targeted element screenshot.

You can inspect the page from its execution context with Puppeteer’s page evaluation API. Distinguishing these cases avoids treating every missing section as a timing problem.

Scroll, wait for readiness, verify, then capture

  1. Identify the target. Choose a selector or another page-specific condition that tells you the expected content has arrived.
  2. Trigger loading. Scroll the relevant page area. If the content belongs to a nested scroll container, scroll that container rather than the window. Puppeteer also documents locator scrolling.
  3. Wait on a useful signal. Prefer the target selector or an application-specific ready state. Use network idleness only when it makes sense for the page.
  4. Verify the content. Confirm the target exists and is visible before taking the screenshot.
  5. Capture the desired scope. Use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) for the full document, or capture an individual element when that is all you need.

Illustrative full-page pattern

This adaptable example scrolls the main page in increments and then waits for a site-specific ready marker. It is not a tested reproduction for a particular website; replace the selector and scrolling strategy to match the page. The short pauses pace scrolling, but they are not proof that content has loaded.

const url = 'https://example.com';

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

// For a nested scroll area, scroll that container instead of window.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
  const step = Math.max(300, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
  for (let y = 0; y < document.body.scrollHeight; y += step) {
    window.scrollTo(0, y);
    await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
  }
});

// Replace this with a selector or condition that means the target is ready.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-content-ready="true"]', { timeout: 10000 });

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

Puppeteer’s page.evaluate() API waits for a Promise returned by the page-context function, so it can await a scrolling routine like this. For more reliable automation, replace fixed pacing with a condition tied to the content you need.

Capture one element instead

If you already have an element handle and only need that element, ElementHandle.screenshot() scrolls it into view if necessary and captures it. That behavior does not guarantee that other page sections have loaded. See the ElementHandle screenshot documentation.

Choose a wait that matches the page

Need Approach Important limit
Full document after scroll-triggered loading Trigger scrolling, verify readiness, then use Page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }). Full-page capture alone is not documented to trigger loading.
One known element Use ElementHandle.screenshot(). It scrolls that element into view; it does not promise other sections will load.
Network-backed content without a better signal Use waitForNetworkIdle(). Network quiet is not a guarantee that the application rendered the target.
A page with a known completion condition Wait for its selector or application state, then capture. You must identify the condition that represents readiness for that site.

What network-idle waits do—and do not—tell you

waitForNetworkIdle() waits for network activity to remain idle for an interval; it does not check that a particular block has appeared. Puppeteer documents a default idleTime of 500 ms for its network-idle options. Its networkidle0 and networkidle2 definitions also require at least 500 ms of network idleness. These are timing definitions, not guarantees of application readiness. See the waitForNetworkIdle API and lifecycle event definitions.

Use a target-specific selector or application condition when available. A page can become network-idle before its content is ready, and a page with ongoing requests may not become idle when you expect it to.

Troubleshoot persistent missing content

  • The expected selector times out: check that the selector matches the page’s actual markup and that scrolling triggers the relevant behavior. Inspect whether the target is inserted only after another interaction.
  • The main page scrolls, but the target does not load: look for a nested scroll container and scroll that region. Puppeteer’s locator scrolling API can help target an element.
  • The selector exists but the screenshot still looks incomplete: check whether it is hidden, covered, or not yet rendered as expected; verify visibility before capture.
  • Network idle never arrives or arrives too early: do not treat it as a universal readiness test. Prefer the page’s known completion signal.
  • The target is in a frame: inspect the relevant frame and its content rather than assuming the main page’s DOM contains it. Puppeteer provides page and frame evaluation APIs; the correct frame and readiness condition are site-specific.

These checks are practical diagnostics based on Puppeteer’s separate scrolling, evaluation, waiting, and screenshot APIs; they are not guaranteed diagnoses for every site.

If you need an image or PDF without managing a Puppeteer browser, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its request accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
