A screenshot can show placeholder content because the page was captured before its real content became visible, because the app was still loading data, or because the browser’s client-side render changed what the server initially sent. First check whether the placeholder disappears when you wait. Then inspect the browser console and, if capture is automated, make the script wait for the specific content the screenshot is meant to show.
A screenshot alone cannot tell you which cause applies. The useful clues are whether the placeholder later goes away, whether the console reports a hydration problem, and what condition the capture job waits for.
What the placeholder may mean
It is a loading state
A skeleton, spinner, or other fallback may be the page’s intended interim UI. For example, Next.js documents loading.js as a way to show loading UI while route content streams; the new content replaces it when ready. In that case, a screenshot may accurately show the page at an intermediate moment rather than reveal a rendering defect.
Reload the page and watch whether the placeholder is replaced. If it is, identify the request, async component, or data dependency that controls the transition. If it stays visible, investigate whether the underlying request is slow, has failed, or is meant to leave the fallback in place.

The browser render differs from the server output
In a server-rendered React app, the browser hydrates the HTML delivered by the server. React says, “The React tree you pass to hydrateRoot needs to produce the same output as it did on the server.” If the initial client render differs, the browser may show a change or report a hydration warning.
Next.js lists several possible sources of hydration mismatches, including browser-only APIs, time-dependent output, different server and client data, browser extensions that alter HTML, and CDN changes. A console warning is a useful lead, but a placeholder in a screenshot does not by itself establish that hydration is the cause.

The capture ran before the target content was ready
Automated browser capture has its own timing. A navigation milestone does not necessarily mean that the app’s data has arrived or that the particular content you care about is visible. Make the capture wait for a meaningful element or an app-specific ready condition instead of relying only on navigation completion.
Diagnose the cause in order
- Reload and observe the transition. Note whether the placeholder disappears, how long it takes, and what changes it. If it persists for a real user, trace the request and the app’s error state; a screenshot cannot distinguish a slow request from a failed one.
- Check the browser console. Look for hydration warnings or errors. Compare the server-delivered HTML with the first client render, especially where output depends on time, browser-only state, or data that could differ between server and client.
- Inspect the capture condition. If a script takes the screenshot, check whether it waits for the actual target content to become visible. A generic page-load or navigation event may happen earlier.
- Reproduce the capture environment. Use the same browser version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, and relevant settings as the screenshot job. Rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, hardware, power source, settings, and headless mode.
- Compare repeated captures when investigating visual differences. Playwright’s documented snapshot approach takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match. This can help distinguish a changing render from a stable one, but it does not explain why a placeholder remains.
Make an automated capture wait for the content
With Playwright, wait for a locator that represents the content you need, then capture the page. Replace the example selector with an element that appears only when the desired content is ready.

If the app has an explicit ready marker, waiting for that is often clearer than guessing a delay. A fixed timeout can be useful for a known transition, but it can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.

When a screenshot differs from an earlier one, first hold the environment steady: browser version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, and settings. Otherwise, a rendering change may reflect the capture environment rather than the app. For a useful comparison, also capture at a consistent point in the app’s data-loading lifecycle and wait for the same content condition each time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a placeholder in a screenshot prove that hydration failed?
No. It may be an intended loading state or a capture taken before content was ready. A hydration warning is one diagnostic clue, not proof based on the image alone.
