To stream a looping video from Google Drive to YouTube Live, download the video to the computer running OBS, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, and connect OBS to a YouTube stream using its server URL and stream key. Drive stores the file; OBS sends it to YouTube. Test the preview, audio, and stream health before relying on the broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A video file you can download and play on the computer that will run OBS.
  • OBS Studio and a YouTube channel able to livestream. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help, so enable it in advance.
  • A stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the stream settings you choose.
  • Permission to broadcast both the video and its audio.

1. Download the video from Google Drive

In Drive, locate the video and download it to the computer that will run OBS. Google documents the download process in its Download a file guide. The file owner’s sharing permissions, download restrictions, or organization settings may prevent downloading; ask the owner for access if needed rather than trying to bypass restrictions.

Play the downloaded copy before setting up OBS. Confirm that it is the intended video and that its sound plays correctly. OBS Media Source uses a local file, so simply opening the video in Drive’s web player does not provide the encoder input.

2. Create or select a YouTube Live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
  2. Create a stream in Live Control Room, or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
  3. Open the encoder details and keep the stream URL and stream key available for OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.

For an event that must begin at a particular time, create the stream and complete any first-time activation well ahead of the broadcast. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; this is a possible wait, not a guaranteed completion time.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

3. Add the file to OBS and make it repeat

  1. In OBS, select or create a scene, then use Sources → + → Media Source.
  2. Name the source if useful, choose the local video file, and enable Loop.
  3. Confirm the video fits the canvas and that its audio meter responds during playback. Use the preview to check framing and sound before going live.

OBS documents common Media Source formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Its Media Sources documentation describes Loop as the setting that specifies whether the file plays again after playback completes. Test the specific file: OBS does not promise that every file will loop with a seamless, gap-free picture or audio transition.

For a rotation of multiple videos

Use OBS’s VLC Video source and add the files to its playlist, then enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. OBS notes that this source can create a playlist of items, unlike a single Media Source. Test the order, transitions, and audio before the broadcast; a playlist adds a VLC dependency but avoids manually replacing one file at a time.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  2. Select YouTube as the service if it is available, then enter the stream key as prompted. If using a custom connection, copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder details into OBS.
  3. Save the settings and verify that the selected YouTube stream in Live Control Room is the one you mean to broadcast to.

Do not share screenshots or recordings that reveal the stream key. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before sending a new broadcast.

5. Choose stream settings that your connection can sustain

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, YouTube’s settings table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 720p/30 fps, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingestion guidance figures, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Leave headroom for normal network variation and use a bitrate that remains stable on your upload connection.

Setting Guidance
Protocol RTMPS recommended by YouTube.
Video codec and control H.264; use CBR.
Bitrate at 720p/30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended by YouTube.
Bitrate at 1080p/30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate YouTube lists support up to 60 fps; select a frame rate appropriate to your source and connection.
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps recommended by YouTube.

These settings are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; consult that page for its current recommendations when configuring a new stream. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers, so the encoder sends one configured feed rather than a separate version for every viewer device.

6. Test the stream, then go live

  1. In OBS, start streaming and wait for the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Check the picture, representative motion, and audio at the beginning and near the end of the file; confirm the loop restarts as intended.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream health and any warnings. If the stream is scheduled, use Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
  4. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health during the broadcast.

YouTube recommends testing beforehand with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. A still image or silent test may not reveal the upload or audio problems that occur with the real video.

7. End or archive the broadcast deliberately

When finished, stop the stream in OBS and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement as an archive guarantee for a longer broadcast; plan separate recording or preservation if the full event must be kept.

Troubleshooting common problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
The video does not appear in the Media Source file picker. The Drive file has not been downloaded locally, or the download was blocked by its permissions. Confirm the file is on the OBS computer and ask its owner or administrator for permitted download access.
The Media Source is blank or will not play. The wrong file was selected, the file is incomplete, or the format/file is not playing correctly. Play the local copy outside OBS, then select the verified file again. Check OBS’s documented supported formats if needed.
The video plays once and stops. Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. Edit the source properties, enable Loop, and test the restart in the preview.
A multi-video playlist option is missing. VLC may not be installed, which OBS requires for the VLC Video source. Install VLC from its official distribution, restart OBS if needed, then configure the VLC Video playlist and Loop Playlist setting.
YouTube shows no incoming preview. OBS may be using the wrong service, server URL, or stream key, or YouTube activation may not be complete. Recheck encoder details in the intended Live Control Room stream and OBS stream settings; allow for first-time activation, which can take up to 24 hours.
Stream health warns about bitrate or connection instability. The selected bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain consistently. Lower the bitrate or resolution to a level stable on the upload connection, then test again with representative video and audio.
The sound is missing or the loop transition is rough. The source may have unexpected audio behavior or a transition that is not seamless. Listen through a full playback and loop in the OBS preview; adjust the media or audio setup before broadcasting.

Keep OBS on, or move the loop to the cloud?

The OBS method gives you direct control, but the computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain operational for the broadcast to continue. For an unattended YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it keeps the uploaded video looping without a computer or home connection staying on.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Looping a file technically does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or have permission to livestream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for your channel and material. Avoid assuming that crediting an owner or having access to a Drive file grants rebroadcast rights.
