If a 24/7 YouTube music stream seems to play tracks out of order, first check the exact concat-demuxer script used by the running FFmpeg process. Its file directives determine playback order. Then check whether a launcher or scheduled job is replacing that script, whether the process is reading a different path, and whether a transition glitch is being mistaken for an order change.
First confirm which playlist FFmpeg is using
This troubleshooting applies to FFmpeg’s local concat demuxer, commonly used with a command such as -f concat -i playlist.txt. It is not the same thing as a YouTube HLS Media Playlist. The concat demuxer reads the files in the order listed in its input script; the script’s file directives are the sequence to verify. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
- Inspect the active FFmpeg command and identify the input path immediately after
-i. If the command is launched in a container, check the command used inside the container, not only the host-side launcher. - While the stream is running, open that precise file and compare its
fileentries with the intended order. Redact the YouTube stream key if sharing the command or logs. - Check whether the file changes while FFmpeg is running. Review the launcher, scheduler, container entrypoint, and any playlist-generation script for code that recreates or replaces it.
- If entries are generated from filenames, inspect the sorting and numbering rules. Lexical sorting can produce an unintended sequence when filenames are not consistently numbered, for example when single-digit and double-digit track numbers are mixed.
These checks identify common places to investigate; they do not establish the cause of any particular stream’s behavior. If the script on disk has the expected order, verify that the active process is using that same path and input rather than another copy or a regenerated list.
Check the concat script’s syntax and paths
A concat script is a text file with one directive per line. A simple version looks like this:

file '/media/02 - Next track.mp3'The optional ffconcat version 1.0 signature must be exact and appear on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. Paths with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. If the script is not being recognized as intended, specify the demuxer explicitly with -f concat and confirm that each path resolves from the environment where FFmpeg runs. Distinguish reordered tracks from transition artifacts
A track that starts late, overlaps, or appears to be skipped does not by itself prove that FFmpeg reordered the list. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each file follows the preceding one, but FFmpeg warns that gaps can occur when streams have different lengths. Incorrect or missing duration information can also distort timestamps and create artifacts at transitions.

For the demuxer to work as intended, the inputs need matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If the listed sequence is stable but playback breaks at file boundaries, check media compatibility and duration metadata as well as the script order. The relevant requirements and duration behavior are described in the concat demuxer documentation.
Choose the right concatenation method
The concat demuxer and concat filter solve related but different jobs. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the demuxer as useful when avoiding re-encoding and recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. If the source files do not have compatible stream layouts or formats, the filter may be the appropriate route after making the inputs consistent; it is not a fix for a script that lists tracks in the wrong order.

Use the FFmpeg concatenation FAQ alongside the demuxer documentation when deciding which method fits the files and workflow.
Keep HLS segment order separate from the local playlist
If your setup sends HLS to YouTube, inspect the HLS Media Playlist and its segment sequence separately from a local FFmpeg concat input file. They are different lists with different roles. Do not edit or diagnose the HLS segment playlist as though it were the file list consumed by -f concat. YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements can change, so consult its current official documentation before changing an HLS configuration.

What to collect if the order still appears to change
For a useful diagnosis, capture the exact FFmpeg command line with the stream key removed, a copy of the concat script as it exists at runtime, and the code or scheduled task that generates or updates it. Include the FFmpeg version and logs around a transition that appeared out of order. Those details help distinguish a changed input list from path confusion, incompatible media, or timestamp artifacts.
