First check whether you need a viewport screenshot, a single element, or the full scrollable page. In Playwright, use fullPage: true for the full page; a viewport capture is supposed to show only what fits on screen. If full-page capture is still too short, inspect the page’s scroll container and CSS height rules before blaming the screenshot tool.
Choose the page height you actually want
“Wrong height” can mean two different things: the screenshot cuts off content you expected to include, or it includes more than you intended. Match the capture mode to the output:
- Viewport: captures the visible browser area. Content below the fold is not part of the result.
- Full page: captures the document’s full scrollable page. In Playwright, set
fullPage: true. - Element: captures a particular element, useful when the content scrolls inside a panel rather than the document. Playwright’s screenshot documentation describes the available capture options: https://playwright.dev/docs/screenshots.
Confirm the mode before changing CSS or viewport dimensions. A screenshot that correctly captures only the viewport is not a height bug if that is the selected mode.
Diagnose where the missing content goes
Check which area scrolls
Scroll the page in a browser. If the browser’s document scrolls, full-page capture is the relevant mode. If only an inner panel scrolls while the page itself stays put, the missing content belongs to that nested scroll container. A document-level full-page capture may not include all of its contents. Capture the element if your tool supports it, or use a method that captures the actual scroll container.

Inspect the page’s height constraints
Check computed styles on html, body, the main wrapper, and any scrollable panel. A rule such as height: 100vh can constrain a region to the viewport, so there may be no rendered content below it for a screenshot tool to capture. This was the explanation in a Playwright issue response, not a universal diagnosis: Playwright issue #28027.
If the constraint is unintended, revise the site’s layout rather than expecting the screenshot option to create content. Depending on the design, min-height or content-driven sizing may be more appropriate than a fixed or viewport-relative height. The right CSS change depends on the page structure; do not remove a height rule that is intentional, such as one used for a full-screen app.

Test whether the layout depends on viewport size
Playwright’s page.setViewportSize() changes the page viewport, and its documentation recommends setting the viewport before navigation when the site responds to dimensions: page.setViewportSize(). Temporarily test a taller viewport to see whether the page renders additional content. In the cited issue, a maintainer suggested 1280 × 3000 as a diagnostic example—not as a generally recommended screenshot size.
A taller viewport can trigger responsive layout changes, so treat this as a test, not automatically as the final capture setting. Restore the intended viewport and verify the page at the dimensions your screenshot should represent.

Fix the capture in Playwright
Set the viewport before navigation, then choose viewport or full-page capture explicitly. This runnable Node.js example writes a full-page PNG:

})();Replace the URL and viewport with the page and dimensions you need. To capture only the visible viewport, omit fullPage: true. To test viewport-dependent layout, change the viewport before navigation, capture again, and compare; do not infer that the tall diagnostic viewport is the correct production size.

Compare results without changing several variables at once
- Record the target URL, viewport width and height, browser engine/version, and capture mode.
- Capture the intended viewport or element, then the full page if needed.
- Compare the image height with the document or element height you meant to capture.
- If content is missing, determine whether the document or an inner container scrolls.
- Inspect height rules, then change one variable at a time—such as the viewport or the CSS constraint—and recapture.
- When comparing browser engines, keep the page, viewport, state, and capture options the same.
A 2020 Playwright report described a Chromium full-page mismatch involving vh and vw units: Playwright issue #6342. It is historical evidence, not proof of a current Chromium defect. Consider engine-specific behavior only after checking capture mode, scroll roots, and layout; reproduce against current versions before attributing the result to a browser.
Troubleshoot common height problems
