To record separate microphone, game, browser, or chat audio in OBS with Voicemeeter Banana, route each source to its own Voicemeeter virtual output, capture each output as a separate OBS source, then assign those sources to separate recording tracks. In OBS, you must also enable the tracks in Settings → Output. Keep a complete mix on track 1 if the recording needs to play with sound in standard video players.
How the split works
Voicemeeter Banana routes audio; OBS records the routed signals and assigns them to tracks. Banana has physical A buses and virtual B1/B2 buses. Each bus combines whatever inputs are sent to it, so two sources routed to the same bus arrive at OBS as one mix rather than independently editable sources.
Device names can vary with Windows and Voicemeeter driver generations. The labels below describe common names; select the corresponding devices actually shown on your computer.
Plan your source-to-track map
Decide which sources you want to adjust independently during editing, and give each a clear name in both applications. For example:

| Audio source | Voicemeeter destination | OBS capture source | Recording track |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microphone | B1 | Voicemeeter Output | Track 2 |
| Game audio | B2 | Voicemeeter AUX Output | Track 3 |
| Combined listening mix | Route the desired sources to a shared output | Corresponding Voicemeeter output | Track 1 |
This is an example, not a required universal map. Choose routes that give OBS a distinct output for every source you need to edit separately, while preserving a full mix on track 1 when playback compatibility matters.
Route sources through Voicemeeter Banana
- Identify the input strips. In Banana, locate the hardware and virtual input strips that receive your microphone and application audio. Set applications and Windows playback devices to the Voicemeeter inputs appropriate to your setup.
- Send each source to a virtual bus. On each input strip, use its bus controls to route the source to B1 or B2. Follow your plan: send a source to a distinct bus if OBS must capture it separately.
- Check for accidental mixing. If both the microphone and game are sent to B1, B1 contains their combined audio. Move one source to another bus if you need separate recordings. A physical A bus is for hardware output routing; B1 and B2 are virtual outputs intended to make routed mixes available to applications.
- Use the installed device labels. Banana’s virtual outputs correspond to B1 and B2, commonly shown as Voicemeeter Output and Voicemeeter AUX Output. Confirm the available names in Windows and OBS rather than assuming every driver version labels them identically.
VB-Audio describes Banana’s routing and provides its Voicemeeter Banana product information and user manual (manual version 2.1.2.2, December 2025).

Add the Voicemeeter outputs in OBS
- In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add button and choose Audio Input Capture.
- Create one capture source for each distinct Voicemeeter virtual output you intend to record. Select the matching device, such as Voicemeeter Output for B1 or Voicemeeter AUX Output for B2, if those are the labels on your system.
- Name each source for its content—for example, “Mic” or “Game”—so you can identify it in the mixer and track settings.
- Play audio through each application and watch the OBS Audio Mixer meters. If a meter does not respond, check that the application is feeding the intended Voicemeeter input and that the strip is routed to the bus selected in OBS.
Assign OBS sources to recording tracks
- In the OBS Audio Mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties using the mixer gear menu or Edit → Advanced Audio Properties.
- For each captured source, tick the recording track boxes you want it to appear on. Assign independent sources to different tracks. If you want a complete, immediately usable mix, make sure the sources that form that mix are also represented together on track 1.
- Open Settings → Output. In the recording settings, enable every track you assigned in Advanced Audio Properties. Track assignment alone is not enough if the track is disabled for recording.
- Record a short sample, then open it in the editor you plan to use. Confirm that the tracks contain the intended sources and that the full mix is usable.
The OBS Project multiple-audio-track guide explains source-to-track assignment and track enabling. OBS notes that “all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time.” Separate tracks are therefore chiefly useful for editing; do not assume a file with isolated tracks will sound like a finished mix in every ordinary player.
When OBS can capture applications directly
Voicemeeter is useful when you want a central mixer for physical and virtual inputs, but it is not the only way to isolate audio. OBS Application Audio Capture can capture selected applications directly on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. This may be simpler if the applications you need are supported.

OBS documents that some application audio may not work with Application Audio Capture. Its suggested fallback is to route the application through a virtual cable and add the cable output to OBS as an Audio Input Capture source. If using application capture, disable global Desktop Audio when it would capture the same signal a second time and cause duplication or echo. See the OBS Application Audio Capture guide for its device and source instructions.
Common problems and fixes
- Two sources appear together on one track: They may be routed to the same Voicemeeter bus, or assigned to the same OBS track without a separate capture source. Route them to distinct buses and capture those outputs separately.
- An OBS meter is silent: Check the application’s playback device, the Banana input strip, its B1/B2 routing button, and the device selected in the OBS Audio Input Capture source. Verify the labels in the installed device lists.
- The same audio is doubled or echoes: A signal may be reaching OBS through both a Voicemeeter capture and global Desktop Audio or another capture source. Disable the duplicate route, including global Desktop Audio when it is capturing an application already captured directly.
- The recording has no sound in a standard player: The player may be playing only one track, and that track may not contain a full mix. Put the complete mix on track 1 when broad playback compatibility is needed, and use an editor to access the isolated tracks.
- An application does not appear or capture correctly: Application Audio Capture has compatibility limits. Use the virtual-cable fallback described by OBS, or route the application through Banana and capture its virtual output.
- A track is missing from the recorded file: Reopen Advanced Audio Properties to check its source’s track boxes, then check Settings → Output to ensure that track is enabled for recording.
