If the footer still covers content, make a temporary, narrowly scoped CSS change and take a second, clearly labeled screenshot: that image shows an altered page state, not exactly what visitors saw.
How do I take a full-page screenshot without the sticky footer covering the page?
- Let the page settle. Wait for visible content to load. If the page reveals content as you scroll, scroll through it and return to the intended starting position. This can help load lazy content, but does not guarantee that virtualized or otherwise dynamic content will be present in the capture.
- Set the viewport if it matters. Open Chrome DevTools and, if you need a particular screen size, set its dimensions in Device Mode before capturing.
- Capture the full page. Open DevTools’ More options menu and select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome distinguishes this from Capture screenshot, which captures only the current viewport. Its documentation describes the full-size option as capturing the whole page, including content outside the viewport. Chrome DevTools documentation.
- Inspect the saved image. Check the bottom of the page and any areas where the footer appears. The command captures a full page, but that does not establish how every site’s fixed or sticky elements will appear.
- If content is obscured, capture a supplemental altered state. In DevTools, inspect the footer element and temporarily change only that element’s positioning or visibility. Capture again, then restore the original style. Keep the unmodified capture if you need a record of what a visitor actually saw; label the second image as altered.
Why can a footer still cover content in a full-page screenshot?
A full-page capture is not a promise that every page will be rendered as if its footer were part of normal document flow. Fixed and sticky elements, lazy-loaded sections, and virtualized content can create edge cases. A page may keep a footer attached to the viewport while the capture extends beyond it, or it may not have loaded every section before the screenshot. Treat the image itself as the check: do not assume that a full-page command has resolved an overlap.
Which capture method should I use?
| Method | Best for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools menu | Manual capture of a complete page | Built into Chrome; inspect the result for overlays. |
| DevTools Protocol | Scripted or automated capture | Page.captureScreenshot includes the captureBeyondViewport option. See the DevTools Protocol reference. |
| Firefox screenshot tooling | Browser-native alternative | Mozilla documents full-page and command-line screenshot workflows. See Firefox screenshot documentation. |
| Temporary CSS adjustment | Revealing content underneath an overlay | Changes the rendered state; it is a practical workaround, not an untouched record of the page. |
How to capture beyond the viewport with the DevTools Protocol
For automation, use the protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot method and consult its current parameter reference for the exact options supported by the Chrome version you control. The captureBeyondViewport option is relevant when the capture should extend beyond the visible viewport. The method’s availability does not ensure that dynamic page content has loaded or that fixed elements will be composed identically on every site.
Common problems and fixes
- The bottom content is hidden behind the footer: inspect the footer element and make a temporary change to its positioning or visibility, then take a supplemental capture and restore the style. Keep the unmodified screenshot for an accurate record of the live appearance.
- Some sections are missing: wait for the page to settle and scroll through it before capturing if content loads on scroll. This is not a guarantee for virtualized pages, which may render only a portion of their content at once.
- The image shows only the visible screen: use Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot, which Chrome documents as a viewport capture.
- The layout differs from the target device: set the desired dimensions in Device Mode before capturing, and note that the screenshot represents that viewport configuration.
