For one lecture file, add a Media Source and turn on Loop. For multiple lecture files, add a VLC Video source and use its Loop Playlist setting. Repeating playback is not the same as keeping a 24/7 broadcast online: OBS, your computer, internet connection, and streaming service must also remain available.
Choose the right OBS source

These controls are not interchangeable. The documented playlist interface belongs to VLC Video, not the ordinary Media Source. OBS describes VLC Video as allowing you to “create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Media Sources documentation.
Make one lecture video repeat
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the lecture.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
- Name the source if prompted, then select the lecture file on your computer.
- Enable Loop in the source properties and confirm the selection.
- Check that the source is visible in the active scene and that playback reaches the end and starts again.
OBS lists supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Playback can still depend on the file and system, so test the actual lecture rather than assuming every file will behave identically. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Make several lecture videos repeat as a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- In OBS, select the lecture scene, then in Sources choose + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the lecture files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the playlist after its final item.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or enable it if you want items shuffled.
- Confirm the source is visible in the active scene and preview the playlist through its end to verify that it restarts.
VLC is a separate installation requirement. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS lists VLC Video for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with VLC required on each. VLC Video’s documented visibility behavior is to stop when hidden and restart when visible; keep it visible in the active scene or deliberately choose a different visibility behavior if your scene layout requires it. Prepare OBS and the stream for a long run
- Check the media source. Verify the selected file or playlist, repeat setting, scene, and source visibility.
- Configure streaming. Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its recommendations for your intended use, computer resources, and network conditions. Confirm the platform’s current stream limits rather than assuming one bitrate or resolution suits every stream. OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Check audio. Watch the Audio Mixer meters while the lecture plays and confirm the intended audio source is active. Make a short test recording or test stream before the full broadcast. OBS streaming quick-start guide.
- Test the complete playback cycle. Confirm the lecture reaches its end and restarts, and that audio continues as expected. For a playlist, check the transition from the last item back to the first.
- Confirm content rights and platform rules. Use lecture material you are authorized to broadcast and check the streaming platform’s current copyright and reused-content rules. A repeat setting does not grant permission to rebroadcast material.
Separate playback looping from stream interruptions
A file can loop correctly while the live stream drops. OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough drops can disconnect the stream. Its troubleshooting guide suggests trying another server or service, lowering bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and platform limits, and checking network configuration and software. OBS mentions 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate configuration, not a universal rule or guarantee. OBS dropped frames and connection troubleshooting.
OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable; a faulty network cable is also among the possible hardware causes. Ethernet is relevant if Wi-Fi instability or a bad cable is suspected, but it is not required to enable media looping. OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

If OBS reports no dropped frames but viewers experience buffering, the issue may be on viewer networks, devices, or locations. Lowering bitrate and staying within the platform’s recommendations may help viewers with less capable connections, at the possible cost of resolution, visual quality, or frame rate.
