To capture a website at a mobile viewport in n8n, render it in a browser, set the viewport dimensions before navigating to the URL, capture the image, and pass the resulting binary data to a storage or delivery node. An ordinary HTTP request that only downloads the page’s HTML does not create a browser screenshot.
Choose a browser-rendering approach
There are two practical routes: call a hosted browser or screenshot service with n8n’s HTTP Request node, or run Puppeteer in an environment available to your workflow. The n8n Browserless integration listing describes screenshot capture in PNG, JPEG, or WebP and says HTTP Request can make custom API calls. Puppeteer offers direct page and element screenshot methods.

For either route, a “mobile viewport” can mean only a narrower browser window, or a wider set of emulated device properties. Width and height alone do not reproduce every behavior of a physical phone. Configure device scale factor, mobile mode, or touch support only when the selected tool actually supports and applies those settings.
Build the workflow in n8n
- Start with a trigger. Add the trigger that fits your use case, such as a manual trigger for testing or the production trigger that supplies a URL. Make the target URL and desired width and height available to the screenshot step, either as fixed values or workflow data.
- Select a rendering route. Use an HTTP Request node for a hosted service, or a Puppeteer-based node or script where your n8n runtime can access a compatible browser.
- Configure the mobile-sized viewport. Use the width and height you want to test. In Puppeteer, create a page and set its viewport before opening the URL. The Puppeteer Page.setViewport documentation recommends this ordering because some sites do not expect their viewport to change after load. Changing mobile or touch settings can also reload a page in some cases.
- Navigate and wait for the page state you need. A known selector or application-specific readiness condition is often more useful than a generic wait. Pages that load content client-side may need extra time or a signal that the relevant element is visible.
- Capture the desired area. Choose a viewport screenshot for the visible screen, a full-page capture for the scrollable document, or an element capture when you need a particular component. Puppeteer documents page and element screenshot methods in its screenshot API.
- Send the image onward. Configure the capture node or API request to return image bytes, then map its binary output to the next n8n node for storage, delivery, or processing. The exact response and binary-property settings depend on the node and service version, so confirm them in the selected integration’s documentation.
Use a hosted service with HTTP Request
A hosted browser service handles the browser runtime outside your n8n instance. The n8n Browserless listing supports the broad pattern—make a custom API call with HTTP Request and request a screenshot—but the exact live endpoint, authentication method, request fields, and binary-response mapping are provider-specific. Confirm these details in the provider’s current documentation rather than assuming that one service’s parameters work with another.

- Add an HTTP Request node after your trigger.
- Choose the HTTP method and provider URL documented for the screenshot endpoint.
- Configure the provider’s required authentication using n8n credentials or its supported secure authentication option. Avoid putting secrets in prompts or exposing them in workflow URLs.
- Supply the target URL, viewport dimensions, output format, and any readiness or capture options that the provider documents.
- Set the response handling so the screenshot is available as binary data, then connect the node to the desired storage or delivery step.
- Run the workflow with a page you can inspect and verify the image dimensions, visible content, and downstream binary mapping.
Provider parameters, rate limits, prices, and response encodings vary and can change. The cited n8n listing establishes the integration approach and formats, not a universal request template.
Run Puppeteer in a managed browser environment
Puppeteer gives direct browser automation control, but a workflow must be able to reach a working browser. Puppeteer’s installation guide distinguishes puppeteer, which downloads Chrome for Testing, from puppeteer-core, which does not download Chrome and is intended for a remote or operator-managed browser. The guide describes Puppeteer version 25.12.0; verify compatibility with your own environment and installed version.

- Create a page.
- Set the viewport before navigation.
- Navigate to the target URL and wait for the page-specific state you need.
- Call the page screenshot method and provide the resulting bytes to the workflow.
- Close the page or browser when appropriate for your runtime.
The core browser actions look like this in Puppeteer JavaScript; this is browser-side code, not a complete n8n Code-node solution. Your n8n environment still needs an installed, compatible Puppeteer package and a reachable browser, and you must adapt how the script returns bytes to your workflow:

Use a Puppeteer community node carefully
The third-party n8n Puppeteer community-node repository describes screenshot options, an “Emulate Device” option, full-page capture, and a remote browser WebSocket endpoint. These are capabilities described by that repository, not built-in n8n features. Check the package’s current installation instructions and the options available in the version you install.

- Review community-node risks before installing third-party code.
- Confirm Chrome and system-library dependencies in the environment where n8n actually runs.
- If local browser installation is impractical, check whether your installed node version supports a remote browser connection and configure the endpoint securely.
- Do not assume the node’s binary property name or device settings match another version; test the output and downstream mapping.
Choose capture and readiness settings
Viewport, full page, or element
- Viewport: captures the visible browser area at your chosen dimensions, useful for checking a mobile layout’s first screen.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page, where supported. Lazy-loaded images may require scrolling or another loading strategy before capture.
- Element: captures a specific component when the chosen tool supports selector-based screenshots.
Wait for meaningful content
There is no single readiness wait that fits every website. A page can finish its initial navigation while JavaScript, API-driven content, or images are still loading. Prefer a selector associated with the content you need or an application state you can reliably detect. If screenshots sometimes omit content, compare the capture timing with the element’s appearance and adjust the readiness condition rather than adding an arbitrary long delay by default.
Device emulation versus dimensions
Use width and height to test responsive layout at a particular CSS viewport. If the task also depends on touch behavior, mobile rendering, or pixel density, configure those properties explicitly in the selected browser tool and confirm they are supported. A community node’s device-emulation option is specific to that package and version; it does not establish that n8n itself has a universal device-emulation setting.

Capture time depends on the target page, browser startup or connection, network conditions, and the readiness condition. No fixed timing or success rate follows from the documented capabilities. For repeatable workflows, use a page-specific readiness check, set sensible timeouts in the chosen provider or runtime, and record enough execution output to distinguish navigation failures from output-mapping problems.

Can an n8n HTTP Request node take a screenshot by itself?
No. It can call a service that renders a page in a browser; fetching a URL’s HTML alone is not a screenshot.
Does a mobile viewport prove a page works on a real phone?
No. Viewport dimensions test a responsive layout size. Phone-specific behavior requires the relevant emulation settings, and browser emulation is not the same as testing on physical hardware.
