If a website screenshot shows a loading spinner, the capture probably happened before the application displayed the content you wanted. Wait for a page-specific signal—such as the expected heading appearing or the spinner disappearing—rather than assuming that navigation finished or the network went quiet means the page is ready. Use Chrome DevTools’ Network panel to see what was happening when the screenshot was taken.
Why screenshots capture a spinner
Browser navigation and application readiness are different events. A browser may finish a navigation milestone while a client-rendered page is still fetching data, building a results list, or replacing its loading state. If the screenshot runs in that gap, it records the spinner instead of the useful page content. Playwright documents several navigation conditions—including commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle—but those conditions do not necessarily mean a particular application view is ready. Find out what is happening during the capture
- Open Chrome DevTools and select Network. Enable screenshots in Network settings, then reload the page. Chrome’s Network tools can record visual frames during loading. Chrome Network tutorial
- Inspect the frame showing the spinner. In the Network panel, correlate that frame with requests active at the same time. Look for requests that are still in progress, stalled, or failed. Chrome DevTools Network reference
- Compare the requests with the visible state. If data is still being fetched, the screenshot may simply be too early. If requests have failed or the spinner remains after the expected data request ends, the issue may be with the page or with the readiness condition your automation uses.
This timeline helps locate when the spinner appears relative to network activity; it does not by itself establish why a particular site is stuck. A site-specific diagnosis requires the target URL and capture code or trace.
Wait for the page state that makes the screenshot useful
Prefer an application-specific signal
For a client-rendered or data-driven page, wait for something that proves the desired view is present: the expected heading becomes visible, the result list appears, or a known loading element disappears. Make sure the selector represents loaded content, not just the document shell. Playwright recommends relying on web assertions to assess readiness instead of treating network idle as a general test-readiness signal. Playwright Page API

Use navigation milestones for the job they describe
For a basic page load, select an appropriate navigation condition. Those milestones describe browser navigation progress; they may not cover work the application performs afterward. Choose a milestone based on what the page does, then add a page-specific wait if the content you need appears later.
Treat network idle as conditional
Network idle can be useful when the site’s requests settle after its content loads, but it is not a universal definition of readiness. Playwright defines its network-idle condition as no network connections for at least 500 ms and marks using it for testing as discouraged, advising web assertions instead. Persistent connections or polling can also make a global idle condition unsuitable. Playwright Page API

Capture after the chosen condition
In Puppeteer, the basic sequence is to navigate, wait for an appropriate condition, then call page.screenshot(). Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; use that pattern only when network quiet is a meaningful signal for your target. Puppeteer also provides Page.waitForNetworkIdle(). Puppeteer screenshot guide · Puppeteer network-idle API
In Playwright, wait for the content or state you intend to capture, then take the screenshot. For example, adapt the selector to an element that appears only when the relevant content is ready:

await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Expected page heading' }).waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
The example assumes that heading is a reliable readiness signal on the target page. If the page has several loading states, choose a selector or assertion that represents the specific content the screenshot needs.
If the spinner still appears
- Check the Network timeline: identify requests still active, stalled, or failed when the screenshot was captured.
- Verify the target context: confirm the automation is waiting on the correct page or frame.
- Recheck the readiness selector: ensure it identifies loaded content, not a shell that renders before data arrives.
- Review the capture order: the screenshot must run after the readiness condition resolves, not immediately after navigation.
- Distinguish a wait problem from a page problem: if the spinner remains in the browser after the relevant requests finish, waiting longer may not fix a failed application state.
Without the site URL and the capture code or trace, it is not possible to identify a specific failed request or the correct selector for that page.

If you need a screenshot without wiring up browser automation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Send one GET request with the target URL; choose a page-specific wait option when the page needs time to render its content. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
