If a screenshot stops at the bottom of the visible screen, first make sure the request explicitly asks for a full-page capture. Playwright and Puppeteer use fullPage: true; Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) uses captureBeyondViewport: true. If the bottom is still missing, check the browser or service’s size limit, clipping settings, and whether the missing content is actually in the page’s main scrollable document.
1. Identify which layer is taking the screenshot
Before changing code, note the screenshot API or library and version, browser engine and version, and whether the call goes through a hosted screenshot service. The title alone cannot identify the cause: a wrapper may use its own option name, fail to pass a browser option through, or enforce a service-specific maximum size.
Also check the returned image’s pixel dimensions and any response error. Compare its height with the page’s measured scrollable height. This helps distinguish a viewport-only capture from a clipped image or a browser/service limit.
2. Enable full-page capture
Playwright
Playwright’s fullPage option defaults to false. Set it to true to capture the full scrollable page rather than just the visible viewport, as described in the Playwright screenshot documentation and Page API.

At the CDP layer, inspect the parameters passed to Page.captureScreenshot. captureBeyondViewport defaults to false; set it to true when the capture must extend beyond the viewport. 3. Check for browser or service size limits
Enabling full-page capture does not guarantee that a browser can produce an arbitrarily tall image. One cited Chromium PageHandler implementation rejects a full-page capture if its width or height reaches 128 × 1024 pixels, returning the error Page is too large. The source comment relates the check to a 16K headless-mode limit. This is evidence about that Chromium implementation revision, not a universal limit for all browsers, wrappers, or hosted screenshot APIs. See the Chromium PageHandler source.
If a hosted service silently truncates an image, consult that provider’s documented maximum dimensions and inspect its response. Do not assume the service uses the same Chromium implementation or threshold.

4. Diagnose a crop that remains
- Verify the option reached the capture layer. Confirm the wrapper accepts the full-page setting and forwards it to Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP as applicable.
- Inspect clipping. Remove or correct any clip rectangle that limits the output to viewport-sized coordinates.
- Compare page and output dimensions. Check the page’s scrollable height and the resulting image height, then look for an explicit error or provider limit.
- Check what is being scrolled. Determine whether the missing content belongs to the main document or to an independently scrolling container. Full-page capture concerns the document; it does not establish that a nested scroll area will be expanded into the image.
- Check content readiness. Confirm the missing region has loaded before capture, especially if the page relies on delayed or lazy content. The available documentation does not establish a universal remedy for unloaded content, nested scroll areas, or fixed and sticky elements; reproduce the issue with a minimal page and the same browser and provider.
