To capture content that appears only on hover, activate the hover state before taking the screenshot: move the pointer over the trigger, force :hover in Chrome DevTools, or automate a hover with Playwright. A full-page screenshot alone will not open hover-only content. If hover styling should not appear, move the pointer away before capturing.

First, confirm what is hiding the content

Move your pointer over the relevant button, link, card, or other trigger on the live page. If the content appears then, the screenshot must be taken while that state is active. Hover behavior may be controlled by CSS, JavaScript, or both, so inspect the specific page rather than assuming one technique works for every element.

Also check whether the content is actually tied to keyboard focus instead of hover. Hover, :focus, :focus-within, and :focus-visible are distinct states; forcing one does not activate the others. Chrome DevTools documents these separately in its CSS features reference.

Force hover for a one-time screenshot in Chrome

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Use the element picker to inspect the element that triggers the hidden content.
  3. In the Styles pane, select :hov and enable :hover.
  4. Confirm that the desired content is visible, then capture the page using your usual screenshot method.

For a manual inspection, forcing the pseudo-state is more reliable than trying to keep the pointer positioned over the page while interacting with DevTools. Chrome’s View and change CSS guide covers inspecting and changing page styles. DevTools labels can change between Chrome versions, so if :hov is not immediately visible, look in the Styles pane’s pseudo-state controls.

Automate the hover before the screenshot with Playwright

For repeat captures, visual tests, or generated documentation, use a browser automation script to locate the trigger, hover it, wait for any page-specific transition or loading behavior, and then capture. Replace the URL and locator below with the target page and an accessible locator that matches its trigger:

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'More details' }).hover();
  // Add a page-specific wait here if the revealed content needs time to appear.
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'hover-state.png' });

  await browser.close();
})();

The locator, accessible name, and wait condition depend on the target site. If the revealed content is inserted asynchronously or uses an animation, wait for a meaningful condition, such as the revealed element becoming visible, instead of relying on an arbitrary delay. Playwright documents screenshots and the Page API, including page interactions and capture methods.

Choose the right capture area

  • Use a regular page screenshot for the current viewport.
  • Use an element screenshot or a clipped region when only the revealed component matters.
  • Use a full-page screenshot when below-the-fold page content must be included. Full-page capture changes the captured area; it does not activate hover states elsewhere on the page.

For repeatable visual comparisons, keep browser and runtime conditions consistent: rendering can vary with environment and settings. Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance also describes moving the mouse outside the page area, or over an unaffected element, to avoid accidental hover styling. A screenshot stylesheet can neutralize volatile elements, but it changes the captured rendering; use overrides to stabilize a comparison, not to represent the ordinary visitor view.

When hover effects should not appear

If a pointer left over a button or card is causing unwanted styling in the screenshot, move the mouse outside the page area or onto an element that does not trigger the effect before capture. This is useful for visual tests where incidental hover styles make otherwise identical captures differ. Do not confuse suppressing a hover effect with capturing hover-revealed content: those require opposite pointer states.

Choose a manual or automated workflow

Approach Best for Trade-off
Chrome DevTools :hov One-off diagnosis or manual capture Quick to inspect, but requires manual steps.
Playwright hover, then screenshot Repeated captures, visual tests, or automated documentation Scriptable and repeatable, but needs a working browser automation setup and a page-specific locator and wait strategy.

In either workflow, decide independently whether the screenshot should show or suppress hover effects, and whether it should capture the viewport, an element, a region, or the full page.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a page in one request; its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These are page captures, not a substitute for a Playwright interaction when a particular hover state must first be triggered.
