For a catalog-wide run, use Shopify’s GraphQL Admin API and follow its pagination cursors so the workflow processes every product, not only the first page. The exact image dimensions and crop depend on your theme’s image slots; there is no universal thumbnail size.
Choose where thumbnails should come from and where they should go
Before building nodes, decide whether you need a new image file or only a thumbnail-sized delivery of an existing Shopify image. Shopify media is hosted on Shopify’s CDN, and the GraphQL Admin API’s MediaImage object exposes processed image data and access to the original source. If the existing processed image data meets your storefront needs, you may not need to create and upload a separate thumbnail. If you need a distinct crop, dimensions, or file format, generate a derivative and decide whether it belongs in Shopify or another destination.
- Use existing Shopify media when you only need to retrieve product image references or use Shopify’s processed media data.
- Generate a separate thumbnail when the design requires a specific crop, fixed dimensions, or output format that your chosen transformation step can produce.
- Attach it to Shopify when the thumbnail should be managed as product or collection media. Shopify’s current media-management guidance is to “Use the GraphQL Admin API to manage media for products and collections.” Read Shopify’s media-management guide.
- Deliver it elsewhere when the storefront or downstream system consumes images from a separate storage location.
Pick width, height, fit or crop policy, and format from the actual image slots in your theme. Check product and variant associations, alt text, duplicate handling, and preservation of the original before changing a whole catalog.
Build the n8n workflow
1. Pick a trigger
For a one-time backfill, start with a manual trigger. For ongoing updates, use a schedule or an event-driven trigger appropriate to how your Shopify data reaches n8n. A backfill and an ongoing sync have different failure and duplicate-handling needs: decide how a rerun will recognize thumbnails already created.

2. Configure Shopify access
Set up a Shopify credential in n8n and grant only the scopes required by the operations you will perform. Reading product information is different from uploading or assigning media. n8n’s credential documentation lists scopes used for full Shopify node functionality, but do not copy a broad scope list without checking the actions your workflow actually needs. Confirm permissions against the GraphQL queries or mutations you plan to call. See n8n’s Shopify credential notes.
3. Retrieve product and media references
The n8n Shopify integration offers product operations such as Get and Get Many. Use those operations if they expose the fields needed by your workflow. For additional GraphQL fields or explicit cursor handling, connect through GraphQL or an HTTP Request node using Shopify’s GraphQL Admin API. Retrieve the product identifier and the relevant media or image URL, along with any fields needed to preserve product and variant associations. 4. Process every page of products
A catalog workflow must handle pagination. Shopify’s GraphQL products query returns cursor-based pages; have the workflow request the next page using the returned cursor until no next page remains. An n8n template demonstrates a cursor loop for Shopify product pages: view the n8n pagination example. Its description notes that the GraphQL node did not natively fetch pages when the template was published. Check the behavior of your installed n8n version instead of assuming that limitation still applies.

Conceptually, each iteration should:
- Request a page of products and the image or media fields required for processing.
- Process every product in that response.
- Read the response’s pagination information and retain the next cursor.
- Continue while the response indicates another page; otherwise finish.
Test the loop with a small page size first. Confirm that it stops at the end, does not repeat a cursor, and does not silently stop after the first response.

5. Create the thumbnail
Pass each source image URL or downloaded binary to the image-transformation step you select. Configure the dimensions, crop or fit policy, and output format from your storefront requirements. The Shopify and n8n sources cited here establish how to retrieve and manage media, but do not specify a particular n8n thumbnail-generation node or universal dimensions. Choose and validate the transformation step for your environment rather than assuming a particular node or output behavior.
6. Save or attach the output
If the result is a new file that should become Shopify product or collection media, use Shopify’s GraphQL media-management workflow. Shopify documents uploading a file to its CDN and referencing it from products, variants, collections, or themes. Uploading media is not necessarily complete as soon as a mutation returns: Shopify’s MediaImage object exposes processing status, so wait for readiness before treating the image as finished. If the output is stored elsewhere, retain a reliable mapping from its source product and image to the generated file.

7. Validate a small batch before a full run
Run the workflow against a few representative products before expanding it. Inspect the output dimensions and crop, confirm the correct images remain associated with their products or variants, check alt text, and verify how a rerun handles duplicates. Keep the original source available until the generated output has been checked.
API choice: Shopify node or GraphQL/HTTP Request?

Why not use REST Product Image operations for a new workflow?
Shopify marks REST Admin API Product Image listing, creation, updating, and deletion deprecated as of API version 2025-01. Shopify also says new public apps must use the GraphQL Admin API starting April 1, 2025. Those statements concern the documented REST endpoints and new public apps, respectively; use GraphQL for a new media workflow and check Shopify’s current API documentation for the version and app type you are building. Common failures and fixes
The workflow processes only some products
Likely cause: The workflow reads only the first GraphQL page or fails to pass the returned cursor into the next request. Fix: Inspect pagination fields in the response and verify the loop continues until there is no next page. Compare processed product IDs with the expected catalog sample.
A product or media field is missing
Likely cause: The selected Shopify node operation does not return that field, the GraphQL selection does not request it, or the credential lacks the required access. Fix: Inspect the actual node output, add the required GraphQL field if appropriate, and review the minimum scopes needed for the action.
An uploaded image is not ready when the next step runs
Likely cause: Shopify is still processing the uploaded media. Fix: Check the MediaImage processing status and wait or retry until it is ready before treating the upload as complete.

The thumbnail looks wrong or has unexpected dimensions
Likely cause: The configured dimensions or fit/crop policy do not match the theme’s image slot. Fix: Check the slot in the storefront theme and test the chosen transformation against portrait, landscape, and unusually shaped source images before a bulk run.
A rerun creates duplicates or overwrites the wrong image
Likely cause: The workflow does not retain a stable mapping between each source image and its generated output. Fix: Define how a thumbnail is identified before uploading or assigning it, and test rerun behavior on a small batch while preserving the original source.
Authorization fails
Likely cause: The Shopify credential’s scopes do not cover the query or mutation, or the app authorization has not been updated to include the needed permissions. Fix: Match access to the specific read, upload, or assignment actions in the workflow, then reauthorize if required.
Performance, reliability, and cost planning
- Process incrementally: A large catalog may require many product pages and image transformations. Test with a limited batch and monitor the workflow’s execution time and failures before scheduling a full run.
- Make retries safe: Decide how to recognize completed work so a retry does not create duplicate media or lose the source-to-output relationship.
- Separate retrieval from writes: Validate the selected source images and generated files before attaching them to products. This helps isolate whether a failure occurred during pagination, transformation, upload, or assignment.
- Account for asynchronous processing: Treat media readiness as a separate check after upload instead of assuming the file is immediately usable.
- Check service limits and actual costs: The cited material does not establish a universal n8n, image-transformation, or Shopify cost for this workflow. Review the plans and API limits that apply to your own hosting, transformation service, and Shopify app before running it at scale.
