To capture a webpage at a specific responsive size in n8n, set the browser viewport’s width and height before navigating to the URL. With Puppeteer, call page.setViewport({ width, height, deviceScaleFactor }) before page.goto(). If your n8n setup cannot run Puppeteer directly, use a community node with viewport controls or a hosted screenshot API node.
What a custom viewport changes
The viewport is the browser’s page area, measured in CSS pixels. Websites use its dimensions to choose responsive layouts, so setting a viewport of 390 × 844 can trigger a different design than 1440 × 900. Puppeteer’s deviceScaleFactor controls how many device pixels correspond to each CSS pixel; it affects output pixel density, not the CSS viewport dimensions. A viewport-sized screenshot captures the visible browser area. A full-page screenshot captures beyond that initial viewport, typically by extending the capture to the page’s content height. Full-page capture is a separate choice from viewport width and height.
Option 1: Set the viewport with Puppeteer in a Code node
Use this approach when your n8n deployment can run Puppeteer and has access to a compatible Chrome or Chromium browser. Set the viewport before navigation: some websites respond to the viewport size during initial page loading.

The order is important: create the page, set the viewport, navigate, wait for the content you need, then capture. For a full-page image, change fullPage to true. A higher device scale factor can produce a denser image, but also a larger file.
Check whether your n8n hosting supports the runtime
n8n’s Code node documentation distinguishes self-hosted installations from n8n Cloud: self-hosted setups can import external npm modules when configured, while Cloud does not allow external npm module imports. Therefore, do not assume a Code node can import Puppeteer on n8n Cloud.
On self-hosted n8n, verify the n8n release, external-module configuration, browser installation, and task-runner environment together. A report in n8n issue #26926 describes an import failure in one v2 external task-runner setup; it is a setup-specific report, not evidence that all task runners fail. The same issue shows a user’s Browserless WebSocket connection example, but that is not a general compatibility guarantee.

Option 2: Use a community node with viewport fields
If you want to set custom width and height through a node’s interface instead of writing browser code, the third-party n8n-nodes-html2image README documents a Viewport setting in pixels. It also describes screenshot controls for CSS selector, image type, quality, and full-page capture.

Before using it in a production workflow, check its current maintenance status and compatibility with your n8n version. A node’s Viewport setting determines the page layout; resizing the resulting image afterward does not make the page render at a different responsive breakpoint.
Option 3: Use a hosted screenshot API node
The third-party n8n-nodes-getscreenshot integrates with the GetScreenshot API. Its README lists custom width and height, device scale factor, device presets, output formats, and timing controls. It requires a GetScreenshot API key and describes binary screenshot output alongside response information such as dimensions and capture status.

A hosted capture service can avoid managing a local browser runtime, but adds dependence on an outside API. Before sending pages through one, check the provider’s current usage terms and how it handles target-page data. Pricing, retention terms, and service-level commitments are not established by the node README.
Choose the method that fits your n8n deployment

For n8n Cloud, do not plan around importing Puppeteer into a Code node. A community node or hosted capture route may be a better fit, subject to current support and the provider’s terms. For self-hosted n8n, direct Puppeteer offers explicit browser control if you can maintain the browser and runner environment.

Common custom viewport problems
The page still uses a desktop or mobile layout you did not expect
Set the viewport before goto(). If it is applied only after navigation, the site may already have selected a responsive layout based on earlier dimensions. Confirm that the numbers are CSS pixels and that the page is being opened in the expected browser context.

The Code node cannot import Puppeteer
Check whether the workflow runs on n8n Cloud or self-hosted n8n. Cloud does not allow external npm module imports in the Code node. For self-hosted installations, verify external-module configuration and confirm that the module is available to the task runner actually executing the workflow. The issue report linked above illustrates one environment-specific import failure.
The viewport is correct, but the saved image dimensions differ
Viewport dimensions are CSS pixels, while the output image uses device pixels. Check deviceScaleFactor and whether you requested full-page capture. A later image-resize operation changes the file dimensions but cannot reproduce the layout that a different viewport would have triggered.
The page is blank, incomplete, or missing late-loading content
Navigation completion does not necessarily mean every image or dynamically loaded component is ready. Use a wait condition appropriate to the page, such as waiting for a known selector or a suitable delay, before taking the screenshot. Avoid assuming that waiting for all network activity to stop will work for pages that keep connections open.

A community node is unavailable or fails in Docker
Confirm that the node is installed and supported for your n8n version. For html2image in Docker, its README notes that Puppeteer must be installed in the image. Recheck the project’s current setup notes rather than treating an old installation guide as a compatibility guarantee.
