You can run a 24/7 YouTube aquarium channel by sending a continuous playlist of recordings to YouTube Live through an encoder. The encoder can run on a computer, a dedicated appliance, or in the cloud. For a first setup, a computer and streaming software let you test the workflow with equipment you already have; a cloud service is an alternative if you do not want a computer at home to handle playout and encoding.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. The channel must have no live-stream restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it before your planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide explains eligibility and activation.
- Recordings and any audio you have the necessary rights to stream on YouTube.
- An encoder that can play the recordings continuously and send the feed to YouTube Live.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder’s total bitrate, plus headroom.
- A plan for monitoring the stream and preserving recordings if you need an archive.
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its documentation also describes a 24/7 broadcast as a supported use case. A continuous feed is possible, but neither the encoder choice nor the 24/7 format guarantees uninterrupted service.
Choose where the recordings will play

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Open Broadcaster Software as a software option and identifies Gyre and Upstream as cloud tools associated with 24/7 prerecorded streaming. The listing does not establish current prices, service guarantees, referral terms, or availability everywhere; confirm those details with each provider.
Set up a computer-based stream
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming setup flow and resolve any channel eligibility or restriction issues. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Create the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then set its title, description, visibility, and scheduled start time if applicable.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube/custom RTMP connection settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Build the playback sequence. In the streaming software, add the aquarium recordings as playback media or a playlist and configure the playlist to repeat continuously. The exact names and locations of playlist and loop controls depend on the software and version; check its current documentation and test the sequence before launch.
- Keep the computer available. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, keep the encoder running, and use a stable network connection. A power or internet interruption can stop the local feed.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Send the feed, wait for it to appear in Live Control Room, and review picture and sound. Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview is healthy.
- Check the public viewing experience. Confirm the live stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages, and check it on a phone as well as the computer. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality over time.
Prepare the aquarium program for continuous playback
Choose footage you are entitled to use and review the sequence from beginning to end. If recordings differ in aspect ratio, brightness, color, or sound level, preview transitions and decide whether to adjust them or group similar clips. These are production choices rather than stated YouTube technical requirements.

Repeating footage can make a channel feel static, and highly repetitive or interchangeable programming may also create monetization problems. If it genuinely improves the experience, add accurate context, organize recordings by habitat or session, or vary the sequence with distinct footage. Do not present superficial changes as a way to guarantee monetization.
Check bandwidth and monitor the stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. If you send a backup feed at the same time, include its bitrate too. The relevant capacity is what the streaming device can actually use: other devices and traffic on a shared network may reduce available upload speed.

- Test the connection and feed before announcing the launch.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for a stable picture and clear sound.
- Confirm viewers can access the stream from the channel page and watch page, including on mobile.
- Decide who will notice a frozen picture, a disconnected encoder, or a playlist that stops, and what they should do.
YouTube recommends monitoring streams but does not promise automatic recovery for a disconnected encoder or stopped playlist. Build and test a response plan appropriate to your setup.
Plan for archives separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not rely on it becoming one complete automatic archive. If viewers need replayable recordings, record the program separately or use shorter broadcast segments, then verify the current archive behavior before launch.

Rights and monetization limits
Rights to footage and sound
You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream the content on YouTube. Self-recorded aquarium footage does not automatically clear music or other material added to it. Check the terms and licenses for every soundtrack, clip, or inserted element before broadcasting. YouTube’s Terms of Service set out the provider’s responsibilities.
Monetization is a separate review
Eligible YouTube Partner Program creators may monetize live streams, subject to program requirements and applicable policies. Permission to use content is not the same as meeting monetization rules. YouTube assesses reused content separately from copyright permission, and highly repetitive, mass-produced, or interchangeable programming may be ineligible. Its monetization policy clarified and renamed the repetitious-content policy as “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025; check the current YouTube channel monetization policies before relying on revenue.
