YouTube accepts live video from an encoder, but the official YouTube guidance cited here does not establish that VLC can reliably send a continuous playlist to YouTube Live over its recommended RTMPS connection. That means there is no verified VLC menu path or configuration to follow for this exact job. You can still use YouTube’s documented encoder workflow to understand what a working setup must do, then test VLC rather than relying on it for an unattended 24/7 broadcast.
Is VLC verified for a 24/7 YouTube live playlist?
Not by the official YouTube materials cited here. YouTube documents how an encoder connects to Live Control Room, but those instructions do not confirm that VLC supports the required current RTMPS workflow, loops a playlist continuously, or recovers reliably after an interruption. YouTube also cautions that an encoder may not support RTMPS. Do not assume that VLC can do this simply because it can play a playlist.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. To use it, an encoder must support RTMPS and accept the RTMPS URL and stream key provided in Live Control Room. The endpoint is shown in your stream settings; it is not a fixed value to copy from an unrelated tutorial. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
What a working encoder setup must support
Before depending on VLC, establish that the VLC version and operating system you plan to use can meet the whole workflow. The YouTube sources do not establish VLC-specific support for these requirements, so treat them as checks—not as confirmed VLC capabilities.

- Connection: It must send to the RTMPS endpoint and accept the stream key from Live Control Room.
- Playlist operation: It must advance through the intended videos and repeat them without stopping at the end of the playlist.
- Encoding: Its output must use a video and audio codec and stream settings supported by YouTube.
- Continuity: You need a way to detect a stopped feed and restore it; the YouTube encoder instructions do not prove that VLC will reconnect or resume a playlist automatically.
- Event duration: You need an operating plan for a stream intended to remain live continuously. YouTube’s archive guidance does not promise unlimited event or archive duration.
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow
The following is YouTube’s general process for an encoder, not a verified VLC-specific recipe. Exact controls for entering the endpoint, key, and encoding options depend on the encoder.
- Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Choose the visibility and other event settings appropriate for your channel.
- Copy the connection details from Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS URL revealed in the stream settings and the stream key for that event. Keep the key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder connect to your stream.
- Configure an RTMPS-capable encoder. Enter the URL and key in the encoder, then select compatible video and audio settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS and warns that not every encoder supports it.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder output, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and check that video and audio are arriving as expected.
- Go live from the control room. Once the preview is available and the feed is correct, use Live Control Room’s Go live control for the scheduled event.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Stop sending from the encoder and end the stream through Live Control Room, following YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Encoder settings YouTube recommends
Use the row in YouTube’s settings guidance that matches your intended output resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. The following are YouTube-published RTMP/RTMPS recommendations, not verified VLC settings.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: A 2-second interval is recommended and the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose the bitrate specified for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s encoder settings table. A higher output resolution or frame rate can require a different bitrate.
These settings only describe the target feed. They do not establish that VLC can encode and deliver it reliably over RTMPS.

Plan for a 24/7 schedule—and YouTube’s archive limit
“24/7” describes the schedule you want, not a guarantee that one live event or its archive can run indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. If a complete archive matters, plan the live-session duration and confirm how YouTube handles the event before relying on a single continuous broadcast.
Continuous operation also calls for active checks. Test before depending on the stream, watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s live streaming tips and streaming tips cover testing and monitoring. These are general encoder practices, not evidence that VLC has been tested for this job.

Troubleshooting and checks before you rely on VLC
- No preview appears in Live Control Room: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the RTMPS URL shown for this stream and that the matching stream key is entered. If the encoder does not support RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended connection cannot be used with it.
- Video or audio does not arrive correctly: Check the selected codecs and output settings against YouTube’s published encoder guidance, then test again and inspect the preview and stream health.
- The playlist stops or fails to repeat: Verify loop behavior in the VLC version and operating system you are using. The YouTube instructions do not establish VLC playlist looping behavior.
- The feed drops: Check the connection and whether the encoder can reconnect and resume. Do not assume that YouTube’s general encoder workflow provides automatic recovery in VLC.
- The live broadcast works but the archive is missing or incomplete: Review the event duration. YouTube’s cited automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not longer streams.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming a playlist, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast every video and its audio on YouTube. A video being available to watch or download does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the connection process, not whether a particular playlist complies with copyright or channel policies. Review YouTube’s requirements for your content and channel before going live.
