For a fixed playlist, feed the videos into one continuous FFmpeg output rather than stopping and restarting the YouTube stream between clips. Use the concat demuxer when the files are compatible for packet-level joining; use the concat filter when you need to decode, normalize, and re-encode them. Neither method guarantees a black-frame-free result for every source or YouTube playback condition, so inspect transitions in the actual output.
Why switching can produce a black frame
A black frame at a clip boundary can arise in the FFmpeg output or later in the streaming and playback chain. Timestamp discontinuities, mismatched stream properties, a missing audio stream, or encoder and GOP behavior are possibilities to investigate—not confirmed causes for any particular YouTube stream. FFmpeg’s concat documentation explains how its joining methods behave, but does not guarantee how YouTube ingest or playback will handle a specific transition.
The most reliable starting point is to keep a single output process running and make the sequence of media continuous before it reaches the encoder and muxer. Choose the joining method based on whether the inputs can be joined as encoded packets or need normalization.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
| Method | Re-encodes? | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Not inherently; it reads and joins input packets. | Compatible files and a fixed sequence where packet-level joining is suitable. | Inputs must be compatible for the intended output. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts, and edit points do not guarantee clean visual cuts. |
| Concat filter | Typically, when sending the joined result through an encoder. | Files that need consistent dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, or audio properties. | Requires decoding and encoding, which costs processing time and can introduce generation loss. |
| Concat protocol | Does not itself re-encode. | Specific compatible formats where byte-level concatenation is appropriate. | It is not a general substitute for the demuxer or filter; format and file compatibility matter. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and describes the concat demuxer as an option when avoiding re-encoding. The choice depends on the files and output requirements. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files and the concat demuxer documentation.

Inspect the inputs before building the playlist
Compare the media properties before choosing a workflow. Use ffprobe on each file; for example:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "video1.mp4"
Check the following across every source:
- Video codec and codec parameters, width and height, frame rate, pixel format, and time base.
- Whether audio is present, plus its codec, sample rate, and channel layout.
- Duration and container format.
Differences do not automatically rule out concatenation, but they affect which method is appropriate. In particular, a clip without audio needs deliberate handling if the output is expected to have continuous audio.
Option 1: Join compatible files with the concat demuxer

file 'video1.mp4'
file 'video2.mp4'
file 'video3.mp4'
Save it as playlist.txt. Paths are interpreted relative to the working directory unless you provide full paths. Then open the manifest as a concat-demuxer input. A stream-copy output is shown here as a starting point, not as a universal YouTube command:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy joined.mp4
-f concatselects the concat demuxer;-safe 0permits paths that the default safety rules may reject. Use trusted manifest paths.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if present; it does not synthesize audio for a silent clip.-c copycopies encoded packets without re-encoding. This depends on input compatibility and may not produce a suitable output when stream properties differ.
Do not add guessed duration, inpoint, or outpoint directives simply to force a transition. The concat demuxer supports these directives, but the FFmpeg documentation warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. With non-intra-frame codecs, packets or decoded frames around an edit point can also extend beyond the specified boundary. A manifest edit point alone does not guarantee a clean cut. Refer to the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Option 2: Normalize and join with the concat filter
Use the filter branch when sources differ or packet-level joining has boundary problems. The concat filter operates on decoded streams, so normalize the inputs to matching dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio layout before joining and encoding a single output. The exact filter graph depends on the actual source files; there is no safe universal command without knowing their stream layouts and desired output settings.

For two inputs with one video and one audio stream each, the core graph shape is:
[0:v:0][0:a:0][1:v:0][1:a:0]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]
In a complete command, provide that graph with -filter_complex, map both labeled outputs exactly once, then set the output encoder, frame rate, dimensions, pixel format, and audio settings deliberately. For example, mapping the labels uses -map "[v]" -map "[a]"; those labels must correspond to outputs actually produced by the graph. If one source has no audio, create or handle a matching audio stream rather than assuming the graph above applies unchanged.
The concat filter requires corresponding streams to have compatible parameters at the point of concatenation. Apply scale, frame-rate, pixel-format, and audio-format filters as appropriate for your inputs, and select an output encoding that your machine can sustain. Re-encoding offers more control over a consistent output but uses processing resources and may reduce quality compared with stream copy. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.

Map streams deliberately
FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection can choose streams based on rules such as highest-resolution video and greatest-channel-count audio. For a playlist with multiple streams, or a filter graph, do not rely on those defaults: map the intended streams explicitly. A labeled complex-filter output must be mapped once and exactly once. See FFmpeg stream selection.
Validate the transitions before going live
- Build a short output containing the same kinds of transitions as the full playlist.
- Inspect or record the output around each boundary, including the last frames of one clip and first frames of the next.
- Check for black or frozen frames, timestamp or playback discontinuities, and audio gaps or jumps.
- If a boundary fails with stream copy, verify compatibility and timestamps; if necessary, switch to a normalized concat-filter workflow and encode one continuous output.
- Test the finished workflow with the actual YouTube ingest and player path you intend to use. A local file check cannot establish YouTube-side behavior.
Troubleshooting black frames and other boundary problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Black or frozen frame at a cut | Whether it appears in the locally produced joined output, plus source compatibility and edit points. | Inspect the boundary; avoid guessed demuxer durations and try normalizing and re-encoding with the concat filter if packet joining is unsuitable. |
| Audio drops out or changes abruptly | Whether every input has audio and whether sample rates and channel layouts match. | Handle silent clips explicitly and normalize audio before filtering; map the intended audio output. |
| Wrong video or audio stream selected | Files with multiple streams or reliance on automatic selection. | Use explicit -map options, or map the filter graph’s labeled outputs exactly once. |
| Output fails or has artifacts with stream copy | Codec parameters, timestamps, container support, and concat-demuxer duration directives. | Confirm packet-level compatibility; remove inaccurate duration assumptions or use a normalized filter-and-encode workflow. |
| Local output looks clean but the YouTube player does not | Whether the issue reproduces in the local output and whether the ingest and playback conditions are the same. | Check the encoder, timestamps, GOP structure, audio continuity, protocol, and playback state as diagnostic possibilities; the available FFmpeg documentation does not establish a YouTube-specific guarantee. |
FFmpeg version and live-stream considerations
Online FFmpeg documentation follows the project’s newest revision and is regenerated nightly, so options may differ from the version installed on your system. Check your local build before relying on a command:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat
ffmpeg -h filter=concat
The official documentation explains that it tracks a continuously developing project; check the FFmpeg documentation page and the help output for your installed version. A continuous local concat output is a media workflow, not a guarantee of YouTube acceptance or uninterrupted playback.

For a YouTube live stream, use the stream key and ingest settings shown in YouTube Studio for your channel, and keep the output encoder and connection running as one continuous stream. This workflow concerns switching prerecorded inputs; it does not replace checking that you have the rights to stream each video and its audio. YouTube’s treatment of copyrighted or reused material can affect a channel independently of whether FFmpeg joins the clips cleanly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel from prerecorded videos rather than a hands-on FFmpeg pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
