A blank Screenshotlayer image can result from an incomplete request, an API error mistaken for an image, an exhausted account allowance, or capture settings that do not match how the target page loads. Start by checking the request and response—not by changing settings at random. Screenshotlayer’s documentation lists request requirements and capture controls, but does not identify one universal fix for blank screenshots.
1. Check the request URL and access key
Screenshotlayer requires an access_key and a target url. The target URL must include its protocol, such as https:// or http://. Verify that both values reach the API correctly and that the URL is encoded as a URL parameter in your HTTP request. - Confirm the key is present and has not been mistyped.
- Check that the URL includes the protocol and points to the intended page.
- When building a request manually, encode the URL rather than concatenating unescaped characters into the query string.
The API key is available in the account dashboard, and Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says it can be reset there. Do not share the key in screenshots, support requests, or public logs. Screenshotlayer FAQ.
2. Inspect the response before treating it as an image
A request can fail while your application still tries to display the returned body as an image. Screenshotlayer says failed requests include an error code, an internal error type, and plain-text info with suggestions. Inspect the HTTP status, response headers, and body in your client or network log. In particular, look for the documented missing-key, invalid-key, invalid-URL, and usage_limit_reached errors. Make sure your integration does not discard the response body or assume every successful-looking transport response contains image bytes.
3. Check the account allowance
Review the account dashboard and the terms for your current plan. Screenshotlayer documents error code 104 as usage_limit_reached. Its FAQ says it sends monthly-allowance notifications at 75%, 90%, and 100%, and says overage fees apply after the allowance is reached. 4. Test capture timing and dimensions
If the API request is valid and the response is an image, test capture settings as controlled experiments. Screenshotlayer documents delay to wait before capture, viewport to control the capture dimensions, and fullpage to request a full-height screenshot. A page that renders content after an initial load may need more time; a viewport that differs from the page layout you expect may also change what is visible. - Save the current request and response details so you can compare results.
- Increase the documented delay for one test, leaving other parameters unchanged.
- Set an explicit viewport that fits the content you expect to see.
- If you need the entire page rather than the initial viewport, test
fullpage. - Compare the returned images and response details; change one variable at a time.
5. Rule out a cached result
Screenshotlayer documents ttl and force cache parameters. Its API specification gives a default time-to-live of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days); the FAQ also describes that default and says a lower custom TTL can be set. If the image seems stale, review the cache settings and test a fresh capture using the documented refresh option. The documentation does not say caching is a common cause of blank screenshots. 6. Verify format and client-side image handling
PNG is the default format according to Screenshotlayer’s FAQ, which also names JPEG and GIF as supported formats. Check the actual response headers and body, then confirm that your application handles the returned format as an image. A client that treats an API error body as image data, or discards a non-image response, can make the symptom look like a blank capture. 7. Test custom headers only when the target warrants it
Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says custom User-Agent and Accept-Language headers are supported. A target site may respond differently to different request headers, so a deliberate header test can help investigate site-specific behavior. The vendor documentation does not identify headers as a general cause of blank screenshots; avoid changing them unless you have a reason to suspect the target site’s response varies by request. 8. Escalate with useful, redacted evidence
If a valid request still returns a blank image, send support enough information to distinguish an API error, target-site behavior, and a service issue. Screenshotlayer’s FAQ says support can provide uptime reports on request and that it does not offer public statistics. The FAQ reports uptime of “around 99.9%”; that is a vendor-reported figure, not an independently verified statistic or confirmation of current status. Screenshotlayer FAQ.
- Timestamp and target URL.
- Request parameters with the access key and other secrets redacted.
- HTTP status, response headers, and response body.
- Output format, viewport, delay, and cache settings.
- A comparison capture or the result of a controlled parameter test, if available.
