First decide what image you need: for one tall image of the document, use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }); for a normal browser view, leave fullPage off; and use clip only when you intentionally want a specific region. These options control different things, so none is a universal fix for a sticky header that appears cropped, misplaced, or repeated. The current Puppeteer API documents them separately, with fullPage defaulting to false and captureBeyondViewport defaulting to false when no clip is supplied and true when one is supplied (Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions, displayed version 25.12.0 when accessed).
Identify the screenshot you actually want
A “cut-off sticky header” can mean several different things. Choose the output first, then troubleshoot the matching capture mode.
| Desired output | Starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One tall image of the page | page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
It requests a full-page image; it does not mean the header should be repeated at every scroll position. |
| A faithful image of the current browser view | Use viewport-sized capture without fullPage, at the intended viewport and scroll position. |
Preserves the visible composition and sticky behavior, but captures only the viewport. |
| One deliberate region | Use clip with the desired region and verify its bounds. |
Clipping and capture beyond the viewport interact; a region outside the expected bounds can produce surprising results. |
| A long page represented by successive scroll states | Capture viewport-sized frames and stitch only if that output is required. | Sticky or fixed elements can recur in each frame; stitching is not the same as a single full-page capture. |
The API describes fullPage as capturing the full page, clip as specifying a region, and captureBeyondViewport as controlling capture beyond the viewport (Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions). An element screenshot is another distinct operation: Puppeteer says it tries to scroll an element into view if hidden, but does not present it as a replacement for capturing an arbitrarily tall document (Puppeteer Screenshots guide).
Check the options and reproduce the crop
Make the screenshot configuration explicit before changing the site’s CSS. This example captures a full page after setting a known viewport and waiting for navigation:

await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For a viewport image, omit fullPage. If production code passes clip, reproduce with that exact clip as well; do not assume captureBeyondViewport is irrelevant, since its documented default depends on whether a clip exists.
- Record the environment. Note the installed Puppeteer package version, browser version, headless mode, viewport width and height,
deviceScaleFactor, and every screenshot option, includingclipandcaptureBeyondViewport. The current options page displayed version 25.12.0 when accessed; the historical issues below concern older versions. - Make a minimal reproduction. Use a long, static page with one sticky header and a fixed viewport. Capture once in viewport mode, once with
fullPage: true, and once with the sameclipused in production, if applicable. Keep other settings constant, then compare the resulting dimensions and header position. - Set the viewport before navigation. Let the page’s layout and content settle before capturing. Check whether responsive breakpoints, lazy-loaded content, animations, or application code change the layout around capture time.
- Inspect the whole output. Check the top, middle, and bottom for cropping, duplicate headers, missing content, and layout shifts. Confirm that any temporary style changes are undone.
In an October 24, 2019 maintainer discussion, Puppeteer’s v2.0.0 behavior was described as clipping screenshots to the viewport. The discussion noted that viewport resizing could help scripts that relied on earlier behavior, but also warned that changing viewport size can change vh-based layouts and sticky or fixed positioning. Treat that as historical context, not a current-release prescription (Puppeteer issue #5080).
Choose a header treatment for a tall static image
If a single tall image is the goal and the sticky header’s viewport attachment makes the result unsuitable, test a capture-only CSS override that makes the header static or otherwise removes its sticky/fixed behavior. Keep the change scoped to capture, preserve the original styling, and restore it afterward. This is a troubleshooting strategy, not a guaranteed Puppeteer workaround; verify the result against the intended design.
If the goal is a faithful screenshot of what a visitor sees, do not alter the header CSS. Capture viewport-sized images at the required scroll positions instead. If you stitch those images, expect a sticky or fixed header to appear repeatedly unless your stitching workflow handles it deliberately.
Resizing the viewport is another possible experiment for a version-specific crop, but it changes the page being rendered. A wider or taller viewport can trigger different responsive rules or alter viewport-relative sections, so use it only when that changed layout is acceptable and test the output rather than assuming it preserves the original appearance.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
- The screenshot is shorter than expected: Confirm that
fullPage: trueis set for a full-document image and that production code is not applying an unintendedclip. Check the effective clip bounds and thecaptureBeyondViewportsetting against the current API documentation. - The header is cut off in a clipped capture: Compare the clip coordinates and dimensions with the intended region and viewport. Temporarily remove the clip to determine whether the crop comes from the region selection rather than the header CSS.
- The header appears in the middle or more than once: Determine whether the pipeline is capturing or stitching multiple scroll states. Fixed and sticky elements may recur across frames. For a single static image, test a reversible capture-only style change; for browser-state fidelity, preserve the CSS.
- The layout changes when you resize the viewport: Check responsive breakpoints and
vh-based sections. Restore the target viewport and use the capture mode that matches the required artifact rather than treating a larger viewport as a cost-free fix. - The issue appears only in an older deployment: Compare its exact Puppeteer and Chromium versions with the current environment before carrying over a workaround. Puppeteer’s v2.0.0 clipping discussion is historical, and a March 31, 2021 report of a resize symptom under Puppeteer 8.0.0 is one user report—not evidence of a general current bug (Puppeteer issue #7043).
- The header or page shifts around capture time: Keep the viewport fixed, wait for the page to settle, and check for animations, lazy loading, or application-driven layout changes. Reproduce with those factors held constant before attributing the symptom to Puppeteer.
Avoid old Chromium launch-flag suggestions as a first-line fix unless you have confirmed the flag is supported and relevant to the browser version you run.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true repeat a sticky header for every scroll position?
No. It requests a full-page screenshot; it is not a sequence of viewport captures.
Can an element screenshot replace a full-page screenshot?
Not as a general substitute. Puppeteer documents scrolling a hidden element into view, not capturing an arbitrarily tall document.
