You can stream continuously from a Windows PC with OBS by connecting it to a YouTube Live stream, choosing settings your PC and upload connection can sustain, and monitoring both OBS and YouTube. “24/7” describes the schedule you want—not guaranteed uptime: a network interruption, power loss, or encoder problem can stop the broadcast. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so plan separate local recording if you need a replay.
Before you start
- A Windows PC capable of encoding the video you plan to stream, OBS Studio, and a reliable internet connection with sufficient upload bandwidth.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming, with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Your source video, audio, or other content, plus permission to stream it. Review YouTube’s copyright requirements and make sure you have the necessary rights; a continuous stream does not exempt content from YouTube’s rules.
Use an unlisted test first so you can check the actual picture, sound, and stream health before directing viewers to the channel.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable and confirm live access. In YouTube Studio, check that your channel can live stream. If this is the first time you enable it, allow up to 24 hours before expecting it to work.
- Create an encoder stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key.
- Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if that option is available, then connect or enter the server URL and stream key provided in Live Control Room. If configuring the server manually, copy the URL and key exactly.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to connect an encoder to your stream. Do not show it in a recording, screenshot, or public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Set up your scene and sources. Add the video or other intended visual source and the audio source you want viewers to hear. Check that OBS’s audio meters respond and that the scene shows the intended content.
- Start with an unlisted test. Start streaming from OBS and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public or announcing it.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating an encoder stream and obtaining its connection details. OBS labels and available service options can vary by version; if you do not see a YouTube service option, use the server URL and key from Live Control Room.
Choose OBS settings that your connection and PC can sustain
For a straightforward standard dynamic range (SDR) setup, use H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS where available, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current encoder guidance also lists H.265 and AV1, but hardware support and encoding capability vary by PC. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table.

Match the output to your actual upload capacity
- Measure your upload speed; download speed does not tell you how much outbound bandwidth OBS can use.
- YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between the stream’s total bitrate and available upload bandwidth. For example, a stream with a 6 Mbps total bitrate needs more than 6 Mbps of reliable upload capacity to preserve that margin.
- Include audio and any other stream bitrate when considering the total. If other people or devices share the connection, their traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to the PC.
- Choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection or encoder cannot hold the chosen setting. Test with movement and audio like the content you intend to broadcast, rather than judging from a static screen.
YouTube explains bandwidth checks and headroom in its streaming tips. The encoder recommendations are a starting point: the PC must also be able to encode the selected output reliably.
Test the stream before relying on it
- Run a controlled test stream with representative motion and audio.
- Check that the Live Control Room preview shows the right video and that audio is present and synchronized as intended.
- Review stream health and real-time metrics in Live Control Room. YouTube describes these in its live-stream metrics guide.
- Confirm the stream can be reached from the channel or watch page and check it on a phone or other device you expect viewers to use.
- If you plan to record locally, confirm that the recording file is growing and that it can be played back. Make sure the destination has room for the retention period you need.
YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend monitoring audio and video and checking local archive integrity, including whether the file size is increasing.

Plan separately for continuous broadcasting and replay archives
A 24/7 live feed and a complete replay are different things. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. That is YouTube’s current archive guidance, accessed in 2026—not a promise that every shorter stream will be retained in every circumstance. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
If you need a replay, do not rely on one broadcast running indefinitely and assume YouTube will preserve it. Plan a separate local recording, check that the file grows during the stream, and verify that the saved file is usable. Local recording consumes disk space and still needs attention: a full drive or failed recording can defeat the backup plan.

Keep a monitoring and recovery plan
A Windows PC and OBS do not provide a documented end-to-end guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. OBS identifies network-path issues as a possible cause of dropped frames and intermittent disconnections; a stable setup still needs someone—or a defined process—to notice interruptions and check the stream.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the OBS/network state during operation.
- After an interruption, check whether OBS is still streaming and whether Live Control Room shows the stream as healthy before assuming viewers are receiving it.
- If frames drop or the connection becomes intermittent, troubleshoot the network path and review OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- For long operation, consider a wired Ethernet connection and a UPS for brief power disturbances. These can reduce some practical risks but do not guarantee continuity or replace monitoring.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the stream | Channel live-stream eligibility, whether first-time enablement is still pending, and the server URL and key. | Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio; if access was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours. Copy the current connection details again and keep the key private. |
| Stream health reports connection trouble or frames drop | Available upload bandwidth, network sharing, and the PC’s ability to encode the chosen output. | Measure upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test a lower output setting if needed. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | OBS audio meters, selected audio source, and the Live Control Room preview. | Check the source and its routing in OBS, then repeat a controlled test before relying on the broadcast. |
| The stream ends or viewers report it is unavailable | OBS’s streaming state, PC power and network, and YouTube’s Live Control Room status. | Restore the connection or encoder as appropriate, then verify the broadcast in Live Control Room. Do not assume an interruption will recover automatically. |
| No complete replay appears for a long stream | Whether the broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. | For future streams where a replay matters, use a separate local recording and verify that it is growing and playable. |
| Local recording stops or is incomplete | Free space on the recording destination and whether the file continues to grow. | Free adequate storage, monitor the recording during the stream, and test playback of the saved file. |

If you do not want a Windows PC, OBS, or your home internet connection to remain on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the service loops the uploaded content from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
