Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To fix a screenshot API timeout, first identify what timed out: page navigation, a readiness wait, an optional delay or selector, screenshot rendering, or your own HTTP request deadline. Then relax only the failing condition, confirm that the page is reachable, and reduce the capture area if a full-page image is too large. Timeout settings and limits differ by provider, so do not copy a number from one API to another.
Identify which part of the screenshot request is timing out
A screenshot request can wait at several stages. The API may still be navigating to the page, waiting for a load condition, waiting for a selector or delay, rendering a tall screenshot, or returning the result after your client has already given up. Those stages can produce similar symptoms, but require different fixes.
- Read the provider’s error response. Use its wording and error code to determine whether it reports navigation, rendering, or another failure. Error formats are provider-specific.
- Check timing and final-status diagnostics. If available, compare render time with the final page status. A long render and a failed or unexpected page status point to different problems.
- Check your own caller deadline. Your HTTP client, job runner, reverse proxy, or application may stop waiting before the screenshot provider’s render limit is reached. A client-side timeout is not proof that the browser itself timed out.
- Change one setting at a time. Record the result after changing a readiness condition, delay, timeout, or capture scope; changing several together makes the cause harder to isolate.
For example, ScreenshotAPI.net documents the X-Page-Status and X-Render-Time-Ms response headers, which can help distinguish target-page status from render duration. See its documentation. ScreenshotOne also describes timeout errors and diagnostics at its timeout guide.
Choose a readiness condition that fits the page
“Wait until the page is ready” can mean different things. A network-idle condition waits for network activity to become quiet; a load condition waits for page load; DOM content loaded waits for the document structure; a selector wait targets a particular element. A page that continuously polls, streams, or loads background resources may never become network-idle even when the visible content you need is already present.

| Condition | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
domcontentloaded |
The document structure is enough for the capture. | Images or later-rendered content may not yet be ready. |
load |
The page’s normal load event is a suitable signal. | It may wait longer than needed, and it does not guarantee that every dynamic component is ready. |
| Network idle | The page settles after its requests finish and quiet is a meaningful readiness signal. | Background requests can keep the page from becoming idle. |
| Selector wait | A specific component must appear before capture. | The selector must match the page, and the component may fail to appear. |
| Fixed delay | Content appears after a known short delay and no better readiness signal is available. | The delay consumes time on every request and may still be too short on slow runs. |
Use the least strict condition that still captures the required content. If the API supports a selector wait, prefer a condition tied to the component you need over an arbitrary long delay. Avoid stacking a long navigation wait and a long fixed delay without accounting for the total request budget.
These options are not universal parameter names: consult the API you use. Cloudflare’s Browser Run screenshot quick action documents networkidle0 as an option, and its screenshot API reference describes navigation and screenshot controls: quick actions and API reference. Other providers expose their own delay or lazy-loading settings; see ScreenshotAPI’s lazy-loading and delay documentation.

Raise a timeout only when the page is making progress
Once you have identified the relevant stage, increase its limit only if the page is progressing and the intended capture still fits within your caller’s end-to-end deadline. A larger timeout does not fix a page that never reaches the selected readiness condition, an inaccessible target, or a capture that exceeds provider limits.
Timeout numbers cannot be compared without knowing what they govern. Cloudflare’s API reference documents a maximum of 60,000 ms for gotoOptions.timeout, which applies to navigation. ScreenshotAPI.net lists a 1–30 second timeout range for a whole render. These are different provider settings, not general recommendations or interchangeable limits.

Reduce the capture area when a full-page image is the problem
Full-page captures can require much more rendering and image output than a viewport capture. If the whole page is not necessary, try a viewport or a specific element. If full-page coverage is required, check whether the provider imposes a maximum page height and whether the page’s lazy-loaded sections are being triggered as expected.
Cloudflare supports fullPage and selector-based capture options in its screenshot API reference. ScreenshotAPI.net states that its full-page height is capped at 4,320 px in its documentation. That cap is specific to ScreenshotAPI.net; do not assume it applies to other APIs.

Troubleshoot common timeout patterns
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The request times out while waiting for network idle. | The target continues background requests or never reaches the provider’s idle condition. | Try a less strict load condition, or wait for the specific selector needed for the image if the API supports it. |
| The screenshot returns before a key element appears. | The chosen readiness condition finishes before that dynamic content is rendered. | Wait for the element’s selector, or use a short bounded delay if no content-specific wait is available. |
| A long delay does not prevent intermittent failures. | The delay is not tied to actual content readiness, or the page varies in load time. | Replace the fixed wait with a selector or suitable readiness condition; avoid adding delays without checking the total deadline. |
| The API reports a timeout despite a generous render setting. | Your client or an intermediary may have a shorter HTTP deadline, or the failure may occur at another stage. | Compare the client deadline with provider diagnostics and error details; inspect final page status where available. |
| Only full-page captures fail or become impractical. | The page may be very tall, exceed a provider’s height limit, or require substantial rendering. | Capture the needed element or viewport, or check the provider’s documented full-page constraints. |
| The page status is unexpected or access is denied. | The target may be unavailable, blocked, throttled, or routed differently from the browser you use. | Check the final status and provider diagnostics before treating it as a timeout problem. ScreenshotOne suggests a proxy retry for symptoms consistent with IP throttling or regional routing; that is a provider-specific suggestion, not a universal fix. |

ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API, with capture options for readiness waits and full-page or selector captures. The call below saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL; see the API documentation for parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a timeout always mean the target page is too large?
No. It can occur during navigation, a readiness wait, rendering, or the caller’s own HTTP wait. Check the error and available diagnostics to locate the stage.
