To show which video is playing in a YouTube Live loop, add a title overlay to the live video scene and update it when playback moves to the next item. In OBS, the simplest setup is a text source that reads a local file; an operator changes the file’s text as the playlist advances. A browser source or a custom integration can support more dynamic designs, but automation depends on whether the player exposes a dependable current-item value.
The overlay is part of the video viewers see. It is separate from the livestream’s title on YouTube’s watch page, which is broadcast metadata you edit in YouTube Studio.
Choose which title you want viewers to see
“Now-playing title” can refer to two different things:
- An on-screen label: Text composited into the live video, useful for showing the title of the item currently playing in a loop.
- The YouTube livestream title: Metadata shown on the watch page. You can edit stream settings in YouTube Studio, but YouTube does not document that this title changes automatically when the video inside your stream changes. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
This guide covers the on-screen label. Updating that label does not update the watch-page title unless you separately configure and test an integration to do both.

Also distinguish a live encoder workflow from looping a YouTube video for personal viewing. YouTube’s loop instructions describe repeating videos or playlists while watching YouTube; they are not instructions for making a playlist the content of an encoder-based livestream.
Add a now-playing label in OBS
OBS supports text sources, browser sources, and a VLC video source that can play and loop a playlist. The OBS VLC source requires VLC to be installed. The OBS documentation describes these source types, but does not establish that the active playlist item is automatically synchronized with an overlay. See the OBS Sources Guide and OBS Media Sources documentation.

- Build your video scene. In OBS, add the source or sources that play your loop, then add a text source above the video in the scene’s source stack so the label appears over it.
- Set up a text file source. Configure the text source to read its text from a local file. OBS will display the file’s contents as the label.
- Update the file when playback advances. Replace its contents with the next video’s title. This manual method is straightforward, but someone must make the update at the right time.
- Style and place the label. Use a readable size, contrast, and position that do not obscure important video content. Check that a long title fits the scene rather than being clipped.
- Test the complete loop before going live. Check the title at transitions, when a title is missing or unusually long, at playlist wraparound, and after restarting playback or OBS. YouTube recommends checking the preview and stream quality before an event in its encoder livestream guidance.
Pick an update method
| Method | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual text file | OBS reads the label from a local text file; an operator edits it as playback advances. | Simple to operate, but depends on timely manual updates. OBS documents text sources that can read from a file: Sources Guide. |
| Browser overlay | OBS displays a web page as a source; the page can render a styled title and related information. | Flexible design, but automatic updates need a reliable data source and setup. OBS documents browser sources in its Sources Guide. |
| Custom integration | A script or service reads the active item from the playback system and updates the label. | Can reduce manual work, but depends on the player and integration. The reviewed OBS and YouTube API documentation does not establish a universal current-item signal for every playback setup. |
What to verify before automating
An automatic overlay can work only if the system playing the video can reliably tell the overlay which item is active. That depends on the playback source: for example, an OBS media source, VLC playlist, browser player, or separate playback computer may expose different information. OBS documents playlist looping for its VLC source, but that capability alone does not document title-to-overlay synchronization.
The YouTube Live Streaming API’s LiveBroadcasts documentation covers broadcast metadata; it is not evidence that the API identifies the current video playing inside a separate source. Before relying on a plugin, script, or service, test it with the actual player and playlist, including transitions and restarts. Keep overlay updates and watch-page metadata as separate controls unless a tested integration explicitly handles both.
