Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a Cypress full-page screenshot cuts off content, first confirm it is capturing the application with capture: 'fullPage', remove any explicit clip crop, and check whether the missing area is below the page or beyond horizontal overflow. Cypress builds a full-page image by scrolling vertically and stitching captures, so sticky elements, layout changes, and unusually sized viewports can also affect the result.
Start with the capture mode and crop settings
Use an explicit application full-page capture while diagnosing. Cypress documents that this mode captures the application from top to bottom; viewport captures only the current viewport, while runner includes the browser viewport and Cypress Command Log.
cy.screenshot('page', { capture: 'fullPage' })
Inspect the screenshot options and project configuration for clip. A clip object crops the final image to its specified x, y, width, and height, so remove it temporarily to determine whether the crop is intentional. Also check whether the screenshot is automatic: Cypress documents that failure screenshots are coerced to runner, which is not the same as an application full-page capture. Cypress cy.screenshot() documentation.
Find where the content is missing
Compare the saved PNG’s dimensions and visible contents with the page you expected to capture. This is a diagnostic approach rather than a universal Cypress test: identify whether the missing portion is vertically below the page, horizontally outside the viewport, or clipped inside a viewport-sized layout.
- Only the current screen is present: confirm that the effective capture mode is
fullPage, notviewportorrunner. - The lower page is missing: check for a crop, unusual page sizing, or content that changes or loads during the vertical capture.
- Content off to the side is missing: the documented full-page process scrolls vertically; a report describes horizontal overflow not being fully represented by that method. Test your installed Cypress version with a minimal reproduction rather than assuming a universal fix.
- Repeated or misplaced overlays appear: fixed and sticky elements can be captured more than once in a stitched image.
Account for Cypress’s scroll-and-stitch method
Cypress does not create its full-page image as one browser-native full-document bitmap. Its documentation says: “When passing fullPage to the capture option, Cypress scrolls the application under test from top to bottom, takes screenshots at each point and stitches them together.” Consequently, an element that changes position or content during scrolling can create artifacts, and the output is not a promise of perfect capture for every overflow or dynamic layout.

Temporarily adjust a troublesome sticky element
Cypress suggests changing an affected fixed or sticky element to position: absolute for capture, then restoring it. Adapt the selector to your page:
cy.get('.sticky-header').invoke('css', 'position', 'absolute')
cy.screenshot('full-page', { capture: 'fullPage' })
cy.get('.sticky-header').invoke('css', 'position', null)
Changing positioning can alter layout. Check that it does not shift the content you intend to capture. The final command restores the inline position value by clearing it; if your test needs guaranteed cleanup when capture fails, place restoration in error-safe test cleanup and verify that cleanup in your Cypress setup.
Check viewport size and page layout
Large viewport dimensions and certain layouts are worth isolating, but they are not established as the cause of every cutoff. An open, triaged Cypress issue reports clipping with a CSS-grid layout and very large viewport dimensions on Cypress 12.2.0 and Windows 10 Pro. Treat that as a scoped report, not proof that other versions or platforms share the same defect: Cypress issue #25516.

If your page uses rules such as html, body { width: 100vw; height: 100vh; }, a CSS grid, or has no top-level scrollbar, reduce the test to a minimal reproduction. Compare the resulting dimensions and capture modes, and try a more typical viewport. If the problem only occurs at an unusually large cy.viewport() or configured viewport, record that condition when reporting the issue.
For horizontally overflowing pages, a separate issue report describes the full-page method as vertically scrolling rather than capturing all horizontal content. It is a version-specific lead, not a guaranteed description of every current Cypress release: Cypress issue #18654. Verify the behavior in your installed version. Depending on the goal, capture a specific element or test the relevant region rather than assuming full-page capture will include every horizontal scroll position.

Make the page stable before capturing
cy.screenshot() is asynchronous. If content, fonts, images, animations, or data change around capture time, the stitched result may reflect inconsistent page states. Cypress recommends stabilizing the page for visual testing; its guide also identifies timing, test data, fonts, and rendering environment as sources of visual differences. Cypress visual testing guide.
- Wait for the specific content or selector the test needs rather than relying on an arbitrary delay when a reliable readiness condition is available.
- Use deterministic test data and put the page into the intended state before capture.
- For diagnosis, compare the result after the page has settled with the result captured while content is still loading or animating.
Use scale only when the evidence points to scaling
Cypress’s screenshot API sets scale to false by default, and its global screenshot defaults can be changed. However, the available documentation and issue reports do not establish scale: true as a general cure for cut-off content. Change it only if the observed output indicates a scaling problem, then compare the resulting image dimensions and layout. Cypress screenshot options and Cypress screenshot API.

If you need a screenshot of a URL outside the Cypress test runner, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. This is an alternative for URL-based capture, not a fix for Cypress’s own full-page stitching behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `capture: ‘fullPage’` capture content beyond both page dimensions?
Cypress documents a vertical scroll-and-stitch process; the cited issue report says horizontal overflow may not be fully represented. Verify horizontal behavior with your installed version and page.
Should I set `scale: true` to fix a clipped screenshot?
Not by default. Cypress supports the option, but the cited documentation does not establish it as a general fix for cut-off content.
