It is a capture component, not a complete visual-monitoring system: you must separately arrange recurring captures, compare each capture with a baseline, and route alerts.
What Cloudinary URL2PNG does—and what monitoring still requires
Cloudinary describes URL2PNG as a screenshot service that captures a public website from its URL. You can then deliver the screenshot through Cloudinary and apply image transformations such as resizing or cropping. See Cloudinary’s URL2PNG documentation and image transformations documentation.
The cited documentation explains capture and image handling; it does not document a built-in recurring schedule, visual-difference calculation, thresholds, or alerts for this feature. To monitor a site, connect the capture step to your own scheduler and comparison-and-notification process, or choose separate tools for those jobs.
Set up a repeatable capture
1. Register for the add-on
You need a Cloudinary account and URL2PNG add-on registration. The documented capture workflow is for public webpages. Do not assume it can access pages behind a login or otherwise private pages without verifying that use case separately.

2. Choose stable capture settings
Use the url2png delivery type and the webpage URL as the public ID. Set the viewport, user agent, and delay deliberately, then keep those settings the same across runs. A changed viewport or browser identity can create image differences unrelated to a site change; too little delay can capture a page before its content settles.
3. Authorize the transformation
By default, add-on transformation URLs must be signed or the screenshot must be generated eagerly through Cloudinary’s authenticated API. Cloudinary says this default helps prevent unplanned dynamic screenshot URLs from creating costs. Unsigned add-on transformations can be enabled in the account’s console security settings, but that is an optional security configuration—not a prerequisite to assume.

With a signed URL, the delivery request carries the required signature. With eager generation, the authenticated API creates the screenshot first; derived image transformations can then be delivered using regular unsigned Cloudinary URLs. Choose based on how you want to control who can trigger capture and how downstream systems will access the result.
4. Apply image transformations if useful
You can resize, crop, or otherwise prepare the screenshot for storage, review, or delivery. Cloudinary’s general transformation documentation says the first access to a transformation URL creates the derived asset, which is then cached on its CDN. That behavior matters for monitoring: a repeat request may not necessarily mean a fresh webpage capture. Verify the current URL2PNG freshness and version behavior, and design your URL/version strategy accordingly before relying on it for change detection.

Build the monitoring loop around the capture
- Schedule: use a separate recurring trigger to request captures at the interval your site and alerting needs justify. The cited Cloudinary pages do not prescribe an interval.
- Store a baseline: retain the approved screenshot and its capture settings. Record the URL, viewport, user agent, delay, capture time, and any transformation/version details needed to reproduce the comparison.
- Capture consistently: make the current screenshot with the same page and settings. Confirm that the request represents a fresh capture rather than a cached derived image.
- Compare: use a separate image-diff method or service. Decide how to handle dynamic content such as rotating banners, timestamps, personalized content, and other expected variation; the cited Cloudinary sources do not specify a diff engine or threshold.
- Review and notify: determine which differences merit an alert, route that alert to the responsible owner, and provide the current and baseline images so someone can assess whether the change is actionable.
Before estimating recurring costs, check your actual Cloudinary plan and usage model. Cloudinary says plan usage depends in part on transformation operations; the cited documentation does not establish a per-screenshot price or cost estimate.
Cloudinary CLI example
Cloudinary’s CLI documentation includes an example that captures the top part of its home page with URL2PNG, applies grayscale and crop transformations, and opens the result. It uses -s because the add-on requires signed URLs. This illustrates a capture and image-transformation workflow, not a scheduler or visual-diff system. Troubleshooting and operating cautions
- The add-on request is unauthorized or the URL is rejected: check whether you are using a signed delivery URL or authenticated eager generation. Do not assume unsigned transformations are enabled; that setting is optional in console security settings.
- The screenshot does not reflect a recent page change: investigate whether a derived asset is being reused from cache. Cloudinary documents caching for derived transformations; verify URL2PNG’s current freshness and version behavior and use a strategy that ensures the comparison gets a new capture.
- The comparison reports noisy differences: verify that viewport, user agent, and delay are identical, then account for dynamic page content in your comparison policy. No particular threshold or diff method is established by the cited Cloudinary pages.
- A private page is not captured as expected: the documented workflow describes public websites. Treat authenticated-page capture as unverified for this workflow until you confirm support and authorization details.
- Usage or cost is higher than expected: review the account’s plan limits and transformation usage, and check whether repeated derived transformations are being created. Cloudinary’s documentation does not provide a universal per-capture estimate.
- You receive an image but no monitoring alert: capture alone is not the full monitoring loop. Confirm that a separate scheduler, baseline comparison, and notification route are in place.
