Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To save Cypress’s automatic failure screenshot, run the test with cypress run, make sure the effective configuration has screenshotOnRunFailure: true, and look in the configured screenshotsFolder—cypress/screenshots by default. In CI, also upload or preserve that folder; Cypress saving a file locally does not retain it after a job ends.
1. Run the test in the mode that captures failure screenshots
Cypress automatically captures screenshots for test failures during cypress run, including CI runs. It does not automatically capture failure screenshots in the interactive cypress open app. To check a specific spec, run:
npx cypress run --spec "path/to/spec.cy.js"
Replace the path with the spec you are troubleshooting. See Cypress’s screenshots and videos guide for details about automatic capture.
2. Check the configuration Cypress actually uses
screenshotOnRunFailure defaults to true, but a project setting or runtime override can disable it. Check the config file loaded for this run—not just the root config. If the command includes --config-file, inspect that file; also check for a --config override.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
const { defineConfig } = require('cypress')
module.exports = defineConfig({
screenshotOnRunFailure: true,
screenshotsFolder: 'cypress/screenshots',
})
For TypeScript module syntax, use import { defineConfig } from 'cypress' and export default defineConfig({...}). Put the options in the configuration shape appropriate to your Cypress version and testing type. The Cypress configuration reference documents the available settings.
3. Find the screenshot in the configured folder
The default output directory is cypress/screenshots, but screenshotsFolder can change it. Cypress places automatic failure screenshots in a spec-related folder structure. The filename is based on the test name and ends in (failed).png; a retry may add an attempt suffix.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Search the configured folder and its subfolders for (failed).png, rather than checking only the top level. The cy.screenshot() documentation explains screenshot naming and output behavior.
4. Check whether Cypress or CI removed the file
Before each cypress run, Cypress clears the contents of its downloads, screenshots, and videos folders when trashAssetsBeforeRuns is true, the default. Set it to false if you need to retain files from earlier runs. This prevents cleanup at the start of a run, but it does not configure CI artifact retention.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
For a screenshot to remain available after a CI job finishes, configure that CI system to upload or otherwise preserve the current run’s screenshots folder. The exact setting depends on your CI provider. Cypress’s guidance on organizing tests and its CLI reference cover the run and asset-folder behavior.
5. Test the output path with a manual screenshot
If you suspect the folder path or write location is wrong, add a manual screenshot at a useful point in the test:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
cy.screenshot('debug-check')
Then look beneath the configured screenshotsFolder for the named image. A successful manual capture helps check the output path, but it does not prove that automatic failure capture is enabled. See the cy.screenshot() API reference.
Common causes and fixes
| What you observe | Likely check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No automatic screenshot while using the interactive app | The test ran in cypress open. |
Run the spec with npx cypress run --spec "path/to/spec.cy.js". |
| The run fails, but no failure image appears | The loaded config or CLI override may set screenshotOnRunFailure to false. |
Inspect the effective config and set the option to true. |
| The screenshot is not where you expected | screenshotsFolder may be customized, or the image may be nested by spec. |
Check the loaded config and search its folder recursively for (failed).png. |
| Earlier screenshots disappear on a new run | trashAssetsBeforeRuns is enabled. |
Set it to false if earlier run assets must remain. |
| The image exists locally but not after CI completes | The job may not retain the screenshots directory. | Configure the CI workflow to upload or preserve the current run’s folder. |
| A manual screenshot saves, but a failure screenshot does not | Manual capture confirms the path can be used, not that the automatic failure hook is on. | Verify the test is run with cypress run and check screenshotOnRunFailure. |
Or skip the browser setup
For screenshots of web pages outside Cypress test runs, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. This is an alternative capture service, not a replacement for Cypress’s test-failure artifact configuration.

FAQ
Do retries create a separate screenshot?
A retry can add an attempt suffix to the screenshot filename. See Cypress’s test retries guide.
