To launch OBS with saved YouTube-looping settings, pass the saved Profile and Scene Collection names as launch arguments: obs64.exe --profile "YouTube Loop" --collection "Loop Scenes" --scene "Loop" --startstreaming. This is an illustrative Windows-style command, not a tested command; the OBS executable path and name vary by installation and platform. Profiles hold most stream, video, and output settings, while Scene Collections hold scenes and sources. They are separate, so select both when launching.
What the launch options select
OBS documents launch parameters for automation. The options in the example select a saved Profile, select a saved Scene Collection, choose a scene, and start streaming. Use the exact saved names, including spaces and capitalization as shown in OBS.
--profile "YouTube Loop"selects the Profile named YouTube Loop.--collection "Loop Scenes"selects the Scene Collection named Loop Scenes.--scene "Loop"selects the scene named Loop within the selected collection.--startstreamingstarts streaming when OBS launches. Include it only if you intend automatic streaming.
OBS lists these parameters on its Launch Parameters page, published May 30, 2021. The page documents the switches; it does not establish that a particular command, installation path, account, or YouTube setup will work without checking it on your system.
How Profiles and Scene Collections differ
Profiles store stream and output configuration
Profiles store most stream, video, and output settings. The OBS Profiles guide includes Stream (including Connected Account), Video (including Base/Canvas Resolution), and Output among the settings associated with a Profile. Profiles do not store scenes; OBS explicitly directs users to Scene Collections for those.

Scene Collections store scenes and sources
A Scene Collection contains scenes and sources, as well as Global Audio Sources. It does not store output settings. The OBS Scene Collections guide distinguishes these from Profiles.
That separation is why launching with only one of the two options may load only part of the setup you expect: the selected Profile supplies its settings, and the selected collection supplies the scene layout and media source.

Prepare a looping setup in OBS
- Create or select a Profile. In OBS, use the Profile menu to create or select the Profile for this stream. Set the stream destination or account, video settings, and output settings in that Profile. OBS allows Profiles to be duplicated and exported for backup.
- Create or select a Scene Collection. Use the Scene Collection menu to create or select the collection that will contain the loop scene. Create the scene you intend to show and add the video source to it.
- Choose how the video repeats. For a single local file, add a Media Source and enable its Loop option. OBS documents that this option is off by default. For a playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; that option is on by default. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Record the exact names. Check the Profile, Scene Collection, and scene names in their OBS menus. The names in the launch command must match the saved names.
- Test the setup inside OBS. Select the intended Profile and collection, confirm that the desired scene is visible, and check that the video plays and audio is correct before automating the launch.

Replace the illustrative executable path and names with the ones on your computer. A command using the example names is:

For a shortcut, make a copy of your OBS shortcut and append the arguments after obs64.exe in the shortcut’s Target field. For scheduled or automated Windows launches, set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. This working-directory setting can matter when OBS is launched outside the usual shortcut context.
OBS’s launch documentation marks --version as unavailable on Windows, so do not rely on that switch to check the Windows version.

OBS documents passing launch arguments through open -a "OBS" --args. For example, adapt the following with your saved names:

The same form can be used in an Automator Run Shell Script action. Refer to OBS’s launch examples for platform-specific invocation details.
When to omit automatic streaming
Leave off --startstreaming if you want OBS to open the selected setup for review before you start the stream yourself. This is safer while validating the scene, media playback, audio, and YouTube connection. Selecting a scene with --scene is optional if the intended scene is already selected in the collection, but including it makes the launch intent explicit.
Verify the stream before relying on automation
A launch that opens OBS is not proof that a YouTube stream is live, that media and audio are working, or that the stream complies with YouTube rules. The OBS guidance cited here documents its launch flags and media-loop controls; it does not establish current YouTube eligibility or rules for continuous looping and repeated content.
- Inspect the OBS preview and confirm the intended scene and video are visible.
- Listen for audio and verify the expected sources are active.
- Check OBS’s stream status and YouTube’s live status before leaving the setup unattended.
- Confirm your YouTube account, stream destination, and any applicable current YouTube requirements directly in YouTube’s current creator tools and policies.
- After changing a media file’s location or a scene source, repeat the check; selecting the same collection does not guarantee that a media path still resolves.
Portable mode is separate from selecting a Profile
Portable mode is not required to launch a saved Profile and Scene Collection. OBS says portable mode loads configuration from beside the application, but media files referenced by a Scene Collection are not made portable by that setting. It is unsupported on macOS and Linux according to OBS’s Running in Portable Mode page, published July 23, 2024. It is therefore not a general fix for broken media paths.
Troubleshooting launch and loop problems
- OBS opens the wrong settings: Check that the Profile name after
--profileexactly matches the saved Profile. Check the collection name separately after--collection. - The intended scene is not selected: Confirm the scene name after
--sceneand that it exists in the selected collection. Alternatively, remove the scene argument and select the desired scene before saving your normal setup. - The video stops at the end: For a single file, open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not behave as expected: Install VLC and ensure its bitness matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- A scheduled Windows launch fails or behaves differently: Check the executable path and set the scheduled task’s working directory, Start in, to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - The scene loads but media is missing: Check the source’s file path. Portable mode does not package or relocate media files referenced by a collection.
- OBS launches but YouTube is not live: Remove
--startstreamingwhile diagnosing, review the selected stream configuration, and verify the stream manually in OBS and YouTube before restoring unattended startup.
