A frozen frame in an OBS stream can come from the media source, OBS rendering or encoding, or the connection to YouTube—and the symptom alone does not identify which. First determine what kind of source is frozen, then compare OBS’s preview, a local recording, and the YouTube playback. Use the matching branch below rather than changing settings at random.
First identify what “media source” means
In OBS, Media Source usually means a local media file. It is different from VLC Video, which uses VLC libraries, a Browser Source showing a YouTube webpage, or a camera or capture-device source. Their playback controls and likely failure points differ. OBS’s guide documents these as distinct source types: Media Sources.
- Media Source: Check the selected file and its playback properties.
- VLC Video: OBS requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Browser Source: The video is being displayed through a browser-based source, not played as a local Media Source.
- Camera or capture device: The input device is the source to investigate.
Locate where the image freezes
Check three places: the OBS preview, a short local recording, and the public YouTube playback. Also note whether audio continues during the frozen image. These comparisons help locate the layer that needs attention; they do not prove a particular cause by themselves.
- If the preview freezes but the local recording and YouTube playback are normal, investigate OBS’s preview/rendering path.
- If both the local recording and YouTube playback freeze, investigate the source and OBS rendering or encoding indicators.
- If only YouTube viewers report freezing or buffering, first check OBS’s dropped-frame counter; viewer-side playback can be a separate issue.
Use the symptom and OBS indicators to choose a branch

If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide recommends checking connection stability and bitrate rather than treating a dropped-frame count as proof of a media-source fault.
- Check the dropped-frame counter and disconnects. Note whether the count rises while the image freezes.
- Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity. A bitrate that exceeds what the connection can consistently sustain can cause dropped frames.
- Test another streaming server or service, if available. This can help distinguish a route/server issue from other causes.
- Review VPN, security software, network software, and network drivers. These can interfere with streaming connections.
- If using Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable.
Dynamic bitrate can accommodate congestion, but OBS describes it as an accommodation rather than a root-cause fix; it may reduce stream quality.

If rendering or encoding is overloaded
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. A source can appear frozen or stutter when the system cannot keep up with rendering or encoding. Follow OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance:
- Close or reduce other GPU-intensive work.
- Simplify complex scenes and reduce unnecessary sources or effects.
- If the indicators support it, lower output resolution or frame rate.
- Check whether the problem changes when the relevant scene or source is less demanding.
Do not infer that you need a GPU upgrade from a frozen frame alone. Confirm performance pressure in OBS and test less demanding settings first.

If the source is a local file
A local file that reaches its end can leave its final image visible. OBS documents the Show nothing when playback ends option as a way to prevent that last frame from remaining visible after playback ends. This explains a file that has completed; it does not establish a fix for a source that freezes while a continuous YouTube stream is still running.
For an actual Media Source, check whether playback reached the end, whether restart-on-activation is configured, and whether the source is expected to loop. OBS also documents Close file when inactive and hardware-decoding controls. Treat changes to those properties as targeted tests for the observed symptom, not universal fixes. Capture evidence before asking for help
When the cause remains unclear, collect details that distinguish the branches instead of reporting only “the stream froze.” OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends including a log when reporting a problem.
- The exact source type and its relevant playback properties.
- Whether the freeze appears in preview, a local recording, YouTube playback, or more than one.
- Whether audio continues.
- Whether OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises or it reports rendering/encoding trouble.
- The OBS log and the point in the log corresponding to the freeze.
