To keep a local OBS stream live, keep the PC awake and online. In Windows 11, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never at Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. You can still turn off the screen separately.
Keep the Windows 11 PC awake while OBS streams
OBS encodes and sends the stream from the computer on which it is running. If that PC sleeps, its work is suspended and the encoder stops sending video. OBS forum guidance confirms the computer must be fully on to stream (OBS Project Forums).
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under When plugged in, set the sleep timeout to Never for a continuous stream, or choose a timeout longer than the planned broadcast.
- If you want the monitor to turn off, set the screen timeout independently. Do not set the computer to sleep if OBS must continue streaming.
- Leave OBS open, the PC powered, and the network connected while the stream is running.
Microsoft documents these separate screen and sleep controls for Windows 11; the precise labels may differ by device or Windows version. Its guidance explains that the settings turn off the screen and put the device to sleep when not in use (Microsoft Support). The Windows 11 path above should not be assumed to match older Windows releases.
Understand what this setting does—and does not—fix
Screen off is not the same as sleep
A screen timeout blanks the display; a sleep timeout suspends the computer. The display can turn off while the PC remains awake, so the monitor does not need to stay lit for OBS to run.

YouTube auto-start and auto-stop are separate controls
YouTube Studio’s auto-start and auto-stop options govern broadcast behavior when the encoder starts or stops streaming. They do not prevent Windows from sleeping. Check them if the broadcast starts or ends in response to OBS’s encoder connection, not as a way to keep the PC awake (YouTube Help; OBS Project community guide).
A cloud host is a different setup
If OBS runs on a separate always-on host, that host—not the sleeping home PC—would be responsible for encoding and sending the stream. There is no setting that lets a sleeping computer continue running OBS.

Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
Disabling sleep addresses only one possible interruption. If the PC stays awake but the stream drops, use the symptom to distinguish likely causes:

Even with sleep disabled, power loss, network failure, an operating-system restart, an OBS crash, or a source failure can interrupt a long-running stream. The sleep setting alone does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
