Loki and Chromatic both catch visual changes by comparing rendered Storybook stories with screenshot baselines. The key difference is the workflow: Loki documents local reference images, tests, and explicit approval, while Chromatic provides a hosted visual-testing and review workflow integrated with Storybook and CI. Choose based on where you want baselines and artifacts managed, how you review changes, your platform needs, and current compatibility and cost—not on an unverified claim that one is more accurate or faster.

What Loki and Chromatic do

Visual regression testing renders a UI and compares the resulting image with an approved baseline. A difference signals that the rendered appearance changed; a reviewer decides whether the change is intended. These checks complement other test types rather than replacing them: pixel comparisons assess rendered appearance, while markup snapshots and other tests address different aspects of quality.

Loki: project-managed reference images

Loki describes itself as visual regression testing for Storybook. Its documented workflow installs Loki, starts Storybook, generates reference images, runs comparisons, reviews current and difference images, and approves intentional updates. Reference images are stored in a local loki folder, with Git LFS as an option. The team owns the runtime and reference-image lifecycle in its project and CI.

Loki’s project materials list Chrome through Docker or local Chrome, as well as iOS simulator and Android emulator targets; an integration listing also names Chrome in AWS Lambda. These targets can depend on the actual release and setup, so verify support for the specific Loki package version and environment you plan to use. Loki project site

Chromatic: hosted visual review

Storybook describes Chromatic as a cloud visual-testing service. Its documentation covers pixel snapshots of stories compared with baselines, a Storybook addon, and CI status checks on pull or merge requests. The hosted workflow keeps snapshots and review there as commits generate new comparisons. Chromatic says its runs are automatically parallelized; that is a vendor-described capability, not an independent performance measurement. Chromatic features

How the workflows differ

Decision area Loki, as documented Chromatic, as documented
Baseline ownership Reference images live in the project workflow; the team inspects differences and approves updates. Snapshots and review are managed in the cloud workflow; commits produce comparisons against baselines.
Execution and review Run Storybook and Loki commands, then inspect current and difference images locally. Use the Storybook addon or CI integration, then review visual changes and status checks through the hosted workflow.
Platform reach Project materials list Chrome in Docker or local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator; an integration listing also names Chrome in AWS Lambda. Check the exact release. The reviewed documentation emphasizes browser-rendered stories and a cloud browser; it does not establish a comparable device or emulator matrix.
Operations Your team manages the test runtime and reference-image lifecycle. The docs describe this work but do not quantify its maintenance burden. Hosted review and standardized, parallelized execution are vendor-described capabilities; the available material does not establish a measured maintenance saving.
Version requirements The getting-started page lists Node 16+ and optional dependencies; it was last updated August 27, 2024. Confirm requirements for your installed package version. The Storybook 8 visual-testing page describes the addon route for Storybook 7.6+ and token setup for CI. Check the current integration instructions for your Storybook version.

Which one fits your team?

Choose Loki when local control matters

  • You want reference images maintained with the project rather than in a hosted review workflow.
  • You need control over the test runtime and are prepared to operate it in local development or CI.
  • A documented simulator target is relevant to your work, and you have verified it is supported by the Loki version and environment you will run.

Plan for the team to manage image updates and the environment that generates comparisons. The documentation establishes the workflow, but does not quantify its ongoing effort.

Choose Chromatic when hosted review fits your process

  • You want visual comparisons integrated with Storybook and CI checks on pull or merge requests.
  • A hosted workflow for snapshots and review suits your team’s artifact and data-handling requirements.
  • You have checked the current plan, limits, and integration requirements and are comfortable with the service’s cost and workflow.

Chromatic’s documented workflow provides hosted review and vendor-described parallel execution; the sources cited here do not establish a head-to-head speed or accuracy advantage.

Check before committing

  1. Confirm the exact Loki package version, Node requirement, optional dependencies, and target support against the release you intend to install.
  2. Confirm your Storybook version and the current Chromatic integration route, including any CI token setup.
  3. Check Chromatic’s current pricing and usage allowances directly before estimating cost. No authoritative current price or allowance is established here.
  4. Decide where screenshots, baselines, and test artifacts may be stored, and whether that matches your team’s data-handling requirements.
  5. Run a representative story through the intended CI path and verify how reviewers inspect and approve an intentional visual change.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish

Both products perform screenshot-based visual comparisons for Storybook. The documented distinction is operational: Loki centers on project-managed images and a team-managed runtime; Chromatic centers on cloud execution and hosted review. The available documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of speed, accuracy, false positives, maintenance savings, or security. Treat platform support and compatibility as version-sensitive, and check current vendor information before selecting a workflow.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for screenshot capture

If your need is to capture website screenshots through an API or from an AI agent rather than run Storybook visual regression tests, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it returns clean screenshots or PDFs and bills only clean shots. It is not a direct replacement for Loki or Chromatic’s baseline comparison and review workflows.

One GET request captures a page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
