You may not need to convert your WebM files: OBS lists WebM and MP4 as supported media types. First test a representative file in the OBS playlist source you plan to use. If it fails in your setup—or your target requires MP4—use FFmpeg to try a fast streamcopy, then transcode only if the codecs are incompatible.

Do you need to convert WebM to MP4 for OBS?

Not necessarily. OBS’s Media Sources guide lists both WebM and MP4 as supported types. That is general format support, not a guarantee that every codec inside every WebM file will play on every operating system, OBS build, or VLC installation. Test the actual files in the setup you will use for streaming before converting a whole playlist.

OBS documents the VLC Video source for playlist playback. VLC must be installed for that source to appear; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. In the VLC Video source’s playlist settings, loop is on by default and shuffle is off by default. Change those controls to suit your intended playback.

Set up and test the OBS playlist

  1. Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add the VLC Video source to the scene where the playlist should appear. Add a representative WebM file to its playlist.
  3. Check video and audio. Preview playback in the actual scene and on the computer that will run the stream. Check more than the first frame: confirm that the file plays through and that its audio is present.
  4. Set playlist behavior. Enable or disable loop and shuffle as required. Test a transition between playlist items before relying on it live.
  5. Keep files that work. If the WebM plays correctly, conversion is not needed simply because the file is WebM.

OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide calls MP4 the de facto standard for internet video, but that does not make MP4 an automatic fix for a codec OBS cannot decode. Container and codec compatibility both matter.

Choose between streamcopy and transcoding

When a WebM file fails or MP4 is required by another part of your workflow, inspect the file’s streams and choose a conversion method. FFmpeg distinguishes streamcopy from transcoding: streamcopy moves streams into a new container without decoding and encoding them; transcoding decodes and re-encodes streams into codecs selected for the output.

Method Use it when Trade-off
Streamcopy The source codecs can be placed in MP4 and decoded by the intended player. Fast and avoids re-encoding, but may fail if the source streams do not suit the MP4 container.
Transcoding The target cannot decode the original codec, or streamcopy cannot produce a usable file. Requires computation and re-encoding can reduce quality; choose settings for the actual source and target rather than assuming a universal preset.

Changing the filename extension alone does not convert a file. FFmpeg’s documentation explains that streamcopy can change a container without re-encoding, while transcoding converts streams. MP4 is a container; successful playback still depends on the codecs inside it and the software playing them.

Convert a WebM file with FFmpeg

Try streamcopy first

If you want to preserve the existing streams and avoid re-encoding, try this command in a terminal opened in the folder containing the file:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -c copy output.mp4

Replace input.webm and output.mp4 with your filenames. Use a new output name so the original stays intact. This works only if the streams can be muxed into MP4 and the intended player can decode them. If FFmpeg reports an incompatible stream or OBS still cannot play the result, move to transcoding.

Transcode when the target needs different codecs

For a basic conversion pattern, FFmpeg documents:

ffmpeg -i input.webm output.mp4

When you do not specify codecs, FFmpeg uses the output muxer’s default encoder for each stream type. Available encoders depend on your local FFmpeg build, and this pattern does not guarantee a particular quality level or compatibility result. If the target requires specific codecs or quality settings, select them based on the source streams and target software. FFmpeg’s documentation covers conversion, stream selection, streamcopy, and transcoding at FFmpeg Documentation.

Validate the output before replacing playlist items

  1. Play the MP4 through the same OBS VLC Video source you will use on stream.
  2. Confirm the full duration, picture, and audio—not just that the file opens.
  3. Check that playlist transitions behave as expected with loop and shuffle settings.
  4. Keep the original WebM until the converted file has passed these checks.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as specified by the OBS guide.
  • A WebM file appears in the playlist but will not play: OBS’s general WebM support does not establish support for every codec or local build. Check the file in the intended setup; if it fails, try FFmpeg streamcopy only when the streams suit MP4, otherwise transcode to codecs supported by the target.
  • Streamcopy fails: The source streams may not be suitable for the MP4 container. Try transcoding instead of repeatedly changing the file extension or output name.
  • The MP4 exists but OBS still cannot play it: An MP4 container alone does not guarantee compatible streams. Test the output in the same OBS source and verify the codecs used by the output and supported by the local software.
  • The converted file has different quality: Streamcopy does not re-encode; transcoding does, and can degrade quality. Revisit the chosen encoder settings and retain the source as a reference.
  • Playlist items do not advance or repeat as expected: Review the VLC Video source’s loop and shuffle controls, then test transitions in the scene before going live.
