Automate cross-browser website screenshots by submitting a URL and browser configuration to LambdaTest’s hosted Screenshot API, saving the returned test_id, then retrieving the test status and screenshot details with that ID. The API uses HTTP Basic authentication. Because supported browsers, operating systems and resolutions can change, check LambdaTest’s live availability endpoints before building your test matrix.
How the LambdaTest Screenshot API workflow works
The API runs screenshot tests on LambdaTest’s cloud servers rather than on a browser installed on your machine. The repeatable workflow is:
- Set your LambdaTest username and access key as environment variables.
- Query the available operating systems, browser combinations and resolutions.
- POST a URL and a configuration matrix to start a screenshot test.
- Save the returned
test_id, then GET the test details to inspect status and screenshots.
The support guide describes full-page captures and bulk testing across browser configurations. A larger configuration matrix can produce more captures, so select environments based on the browsers and screen sizes relevant to your users rather than choosing an arbitrary broad set. The documented request shape supports multiple configurations; the resulting number of captures depends on the configurations submitted.
Prepare credentials and check available environments
Keep credentials out of code
Obtain your LambdaTest (also referred to in the guide as TestMu AI) username and access key from your account. Store them outside source control, such as in environment variables or a secrets manager. The API reference uses HTTP Basic authentication; never commit a real key or paste one into a public example.

Query the current browser and resolution inventory
Before submitting a test, use the official guide’s endpoints for available OS/browser combinations and screen resolutions. Treat those live responses as authoritative: examples in documentation may show older browser or operating-system versions, and the exact inventory can change. Choose a compact matrix that reflects your audience’s operating systems, browser families and versions, and interface breakpoints.

Start a screenshot test
The API reference documents POST https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/ with Basic authentication and a JSON body. A successful submission returns a test_id; retain it so you can fetch the outcome.

The field names and accepted values must match the current API schema; consult the start screenshot test API reference when adapting the example. Do not treat the illustrative configuration above as confirmation that a particular browser, version, OS or resolution is currently available.

The API reference also documents these optional fields. Include only those needed for your workflow and verify accepted values in the current reference.

Retrieve status and screenshot details
After submission, take the test_id from the successful response and request GET https://api.lambdatest.com/screenshots/v1/{test_id}, again with Basic authentication. The returned test details include a test_status and a screenshots array. Screenshot entries can include OS, browser and version, per-screenshot status, screenshot and thumbnail URLs, activity ID, and resolution.

Design a useful screenshot matrix
The goal is not to test every environment the service offers. It is to cover the environments that matter to your site while keeping the run understandable and manageable.
- Use your audience data, if available, to choose operating systems and browser families.
- Include browser versions that you have a reason to support; check current availability rather than relying on old examples.
- Select resolutions that exercise meaningful layout changes, especially responsive breakpoints.
- Keep the initial matrix small enough to diagnose failures, then add environments for specific compatibility questions.
- Review the OS, browser, version and resolution attached to each result so that visual differences are not attributed to the wrong configuration.
The API schema exposes these dimensions in the request or result data, but it does not establish a universally correct matrix. The right coverage depends on your users and the site being checked.
Troubleshooting common problems
Authentication is rejected
Confirm that both the LambdaTest username and access key are set correctly and that your request uses Basic authentication. Avoid confusing those API credentials with the optional username and password fields used to access a protected target site.
The test request is rejected
Check that the body is valid JSON, the target URL is present, and the configuration fields and values match the current API reference. A browser or resolution copied from an old example may no longer be available; query the live inventory and update the matrix.

You submitted a test but do not have screenshots yet
Use the returned test_id to fetch test details and inspect test_status and the per-screenshot statuses. A submission response identifies the test; retrieve its details to determine its outcome rather than assuming screenshots are ready immediately.
The target page requires a login
If the site uses HTTP Basic authentication, use the request’s target-site username and password fields as documented. Protect those values as secrets. The available documentation cited here does not establish how to automate other login flows, such as interactive forms or multi-factor authentication.
A callback or tunnel does not behave as expected
Verify the current reference’s requirements for callback_url, tunnel and tunnel_identifier, and confirm that your callback endpoint or tunnel setup matches them. The documentation identifies these options but does not establish a universal configuration for every environment.
Reliability, performance and cost considerations
This is a hosted workflow: your client submits a job and later retrieves its status and image metadata. Save the test ID and keep the request inputs alongside it in your own job records so that results can be traced to the intended URL and configuration. If you use callbacks, still make your downstream processing able to identify the test and handle its status.

Expanding the matrix increases the number of requested browser captures and can make a run larger to process. The cited API material does not establish fixed completion times, throughput, account limits or pricing; check current LambdaTest account terms and service documentation for those details before estimating cost or scheduling production workloads.

Can I retrieve results without saving the test ID?
The documented retrieval request uses the test ID in its URL path, so retain the ID returned when the test starts.
Does the documented Screenshot API support only one browser configuration?
No. The guide documents grouping browser configurations under operating systems; check the current availability endpoints and API schema for valid combinations.
