The right bitrate depends on whether you are uploading a prerecorded video for ordinary playback or sending that video through an encoder as a YouTube Live stream. For a 1080p SDR upload, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. For a 1080p live stream, its recommended bitrate depends on the codec: H.264 uses 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps; AV1 or H.265 uses 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s general recommendations, not India-specific settings.

First choose the right workflow

“Pre-recorded YouTube streaming” can mean two different things, and their bitrate settings are not interchangeable:

  • On-demand upload: You upload a video file to YouTube, which processes it for playback. The bitrate recommendation applies to encoding that file; it is not a minimum speed for your Indian internet connection.
  • Prerecorded video sent as a live stream: An encoder sends the video to YouTube in real time. Use YouTube’s live-ingestion settings and make sure your connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate.

For an ordinary upload, YouTube says no bitrate limit is required. Your connection affects how long the file takes to upload, not the file’s target video bitrate. The distinction follows from YouTube’s separate upload and live-stream guidance.

Recommended bitrate for a 1080p upload

YouTube’s upload recommendations below are for SDR video. Match the frame rate to the footage you recorded rather than changing it just to use a different bitrate.

1080p upload frame rate Recommended video bitrate
24, 25, or 30 fps 8 Mbps
48, 50, or 60 fps 12 Mbps

These figures are YouTube Help’s file-encoding recommendations; the reviewed page does not state a publication year. For the complete upload guidance, including supported settings, see YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Other useful upload settings

  • Use MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, and variable bitrate (VBR).
  • Keep the frame rate consistent with the recorded footage.
  • YouTube’s recommended stereo audio bitrate is 384 kbps; audio bitrate is not determined by video resolution.

Recommended bitrate for a prerecorded video streamed live

If an encoder is sending your prerecorded file to YouTube Live, use live-ingestion recommendations instead of the upload table. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds.

Live video codec 1080p30 1080p60
H.264 14 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations for live ingestion; the reviewed page does not state a publication year. The appropriate value is therefore not one universal “1080p bitrate”: frame rate and codec matter. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for YouTube’s full table.

How much upload speed do you need in India?

For a real-time stream, compare the encoder’s outgoing bitrate with your stable upload capacity—not the download speed shown in an internet plan. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. As a practical calculation, a 14 Mbps stream calls for at least 17.5 Mbps of stable available upload capacity if you reserve 20% of that capacity; a 17 Mbps stream calls for at least 21.25 Mbps. Those calculations assume the connection’s measured capacity is available to the stream.

Test the connection you will actually use, at the time and place you plan to stream. Other people and devices sharing the network can reduce available bandwidth, and upload capacity can be lower than download capacity. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Its guidance is general; the reviewed official material gives no India-only bitrate or profile, and does not establish typical speeds for Indian cities, providers, or mobile networks. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep the upload and viewer figures separate

YouTube lists about 5 Mbps sustained speed for watching 1080p. That is viewer-side playback guidance, not a creator’s encoder bitrate or the upload speed needed to send a 1080p live stream.

Set up and check the stream

  1. Choose the workflow: upload the file for on-demand playback, or create a YouTube Live event if viewers should see it as a live broadcast.
  2. For an upload: encode SDR 1080p at 8 Mbps for 24/25/30 fps or 12 Mbps for 48/50/60 fps, with the other upload settings above. Upload speed determines transfer time, not the encoding target.
  3. For live ingestion: select the codec and frame rate, then set the matching bitrate from YouTube’s live table. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, never exceeding 4 seconds.
  4. Measure the connection: test stable upload capacity on the same wired or Wi-Fi connection you will use. Allow 20% headroom and account for other network activity.
  5. Verify the event: check YouTube’s live preview and stream health before relying on the stream. If the connection cannot sustain the selected live bitrate, lower the stream settings or use a more reliable connection.

If Wi-Fi is unreliable while sending a real-time stream, YouTube’s device guidance says a hardwired connection may help; it does not specify a required cable category or promise a bitrate increase. This is not necessary for a normal prerecorded upload. See System requirements & supported devices for YouTube.

Common bitrate and connection problems

  • The upload takes a long time: The file’s upload transfer depends on available upload bandwidth and file size. It does not mean you must encode the video at a different bitrate; YouTube says no upload bitrate limit is required.
  • The live stream buffers, drops frames, or loses stability: The connection may not sustain the outgoing bitrate, may be shared, or may have less upload capacity than expected. Measure stable upload performance, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and reduce the live bitrate if necessary.
  • The selected live bitrate does not match YouTube’s recommendation: Check both codec and frame rate. For example, H.264 and AV1/H.265 have different recommended values at the same resolution and frame rate.
  • You are using the viewer’s speed requirement as an encoder setting: About 5 Mbps is YouTube’s sustained playback figure for watching 1080p, not the creator’s live-stream bitrate.
  • You expect one India-wide setting to work everywhere: YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not publish an India-specific setting. Use measured performance on your own connection instead of assuming a provider, city, or connection type has a particular upload speed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs it from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Copyright and YouTube eligibility still matter

A bitrate setting cannot make a video eligible for streaming or monetization. Use material you own or have permission to use, and check YouTube’s rules for copyrighted and reused content before running a prerecorded broadcast. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling or looping a video.
