If your YouTube Live archive is already on your computer, upload it through YouTube Studio and let the transfer finish; if it stops, YouTube says you can return to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and select the same file to continue. A slow archive upload is usually a matter of file size and available upload bandwidth—not a problem that changing your live-stream bitrate can fix after the event.
First check whether YouTube already saved the livestream
Open YouTube Studio and check your channel’s Live content for the stream. YouTube’s current Help guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not assume an archive will exist for a longer broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.
If the stream is already in Live content, you may not need to upload another copy. If it is missing, look for the recording on the computer or other device that captured it. A second copy on separate storage can help protect the recording, but it will not make an internet upload faster.
Upload the saved archive through YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio. Choose the upload option and select the saved video file. YouTube’s upload guidance distinguishes uploading a video from publishing it: uploading transfers and processes the file; publishing makes it available to viewers.
- Choose the audience and visibility settings. You can leave the video private or unlisted while it processes or while you decide how to publish it.
- Keep the connection and device available. Avoid interrupting the transfer if possible. YouTube says upload duration varies with file size, bandwidth, upload traffic, and video quality; a transfer may take minutes or hours. It recommends letting an upload that is merely slow finish.
- Check processing and publication separately. A completed transfer does not necessarily mean the video is ready to watch at every quality or has been made public. Review its status and visibility in Studio.
Resume an upload that was interrupted
YouTube’s current “Video stuck during upload” Help guidance gives a 24-hour continuation window. Within 24 hours of the interruption, go to youtube.com/upload and select the same file again. YouTube says this continues from where the upload stopped.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Use the same file rather than an edited, renamed export or a different copy. The guidance does not promise that an interrupted upload can be resumed indefinitely, so if more than 24 hours have passed, try selecting the file again and follow the status or error YouTube displays; a fresh upload may be necessary.
Estimate why the transfer is taking so long
The main practical constraint is how much data remains in the file compared with the upload bandwidth actually available to your device. File size, connection capacity, network traffic, and quality all affect upload time. A higher-quality recording, including 4K video, generally takes longer to transfer because it can be much larger.

There is no dependable universal time estimate from YouTube’s guidance. A speed-test result is only a snapshot, and other devices or network activity can reduce the bandwidth available during the upload. If progress is moving, leaving it uninterrupted is often more useful than repeatedly restarting it.
Check YouTube’s account and file limits
- Long videos: Your account must be verified to upload videos longer than 15 minutes.
- Maximum size and duration: YouTube’s stated maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. The size limit and duration limit are separate checks.
- Files above 256 GB: YouTube suggests using H.264 compression to reduce file size. Compression can reduce image quality, so keep the original recording before making a smaller copy.
YouTube’s cited upload-limit guidance is titled “Upload videos longer than 15 minutes (Android).” The limits above are the figures in that Help guidance; YouTube’s interface and limits can change, so check the current upload error or Help page if your file is rejected.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If the archive is too large, make a smaller copy carefully
Compression can reduce the amount of data you need to upload, but it cannot increase your connection speed, and aggressive compression may visibly degrade the video or audio. Preserve the original, create a separate compressed copy, play through the beginning and end, and check sound and picture quality before uploading the new file. Use H.264 if you need to reduce a file that exceeds YouTube’s stated size limit, as YouTube suggests.
Do not expect changing the bitrate used for a past livestream to speed up its archive upload: that bitrate governed data sent during the live event. The saved archive’s size and your upload bandwidth now govern this transfer.

Plan a future livestream for a limited connection
For a future live event—not an archive that has already been recorded—choose a streaming bitrate your outbound connection can sustain. YouTube recommends that upload capacity exceed the stream bitrate and suggests keeping 20% headroom. Network disruptions can still interrupt a live stream, so test the connection and avoid setting a bitrate right at the connection’s measured ceiling.
YouTube’s live-encoder settings guidance covers bitrate choices by resolution and frame rate. Its upload-encoding recommendations are a separate topic: live encoder settings control the live transmission, whereas a later archive upload depends on the saved file and the connection available at that later time.

Common upload problems and what to do
- The upload is slow but still progressing: Let it continue if you can. YouTube identifies file size, bandwidth, traffic, and quality as factors; restarting does not make a large file smaller.
- The connection dropped or the upload stopped: Within 24 hours, return to youtube.com/upload and select the same file to continue from the stopping point.
- You cannot upload a long video: Check whether the account is verified. Verification is required for videos longer than 15 minutes.
- YouTube rejects the file for size or duration: Check both limits: 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. If it exceeds 256 GB, YouTube suggests H.264 compression; retain the original before compressing.
- The livestream is missing from Live content: Check for a local recording. Automatic archiving is described for streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
- An error message appears: Read the specific message and consult YouTube Help’s “Common uploading errors” guidance. Different errors can have different causes, so do not assume every failed upload is a bandwidth issue.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a future YouTube broadcast built from a recording or playlist, StreamNeo is a different option: it uploads and loops your video as a live stream from the cloud. It is not a way to accelerate an archive that you are currently uploading to YouTube, and it does not stream from a camera. To use it, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the cloud stream to keep running.
- Each slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
