Print styles change the page’s printed presentation, not its normal on-screen appearance.
1. Add print-specific CSS
For a small set of adjustments, put the rules in your existing stylesheet inside @media print. Replace the example selectors with ones that match your page:

}These rules apply to printed output, including a PDF made through Chrome. Print styles still follow normal CSS specificity and precedence: a more specific competing declaration can override a rule in the print block. If a style appears not to take effect, inspect the element’s matching rules and adjust the selector or declaration.
Use a separate print stylesheet when useful
If the print design is substantial, keep it in its own file and load it only for print:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="print.css" media="print">A single @media print block is convenient for a few changes; a separate stylesheet isolates a larger print layout. Both approaches are suitable for print output.
2. Set paper size and margins
Use @page for the page dimensions, orientation, and margins. For example, this requests portrait A4 pages with 16 mm margins:

}For a landscape document, use size: landscape. To begin a new printed page after a particular section, apply a page break such as break-after: page to that section. Page setup does not guarantee that every element will fit as intended: Chrome fragments content across pages, so inspect the print rendition.
Chrome and Firefox support @page for page size and margins, but support for less common paged-media features varies. For a general Chrome workflow, start with page size, orientation, and margins; verify advanced features in the Chrome version you intend to use.

3. Preview the print rendition in Chrome

Open Chrome’s print interface and review the page preview before saving. Check page breaks, margins, headers and footers, and whether important content is clipped or separated awkwardly.

To work on the CSS without repeatedly creating a PDF, open DevTools, open the Rendering panel, and choose print under Emulate CSS media type. You can then inspect elements and edit their print styles.

Return to the print interface after making changes and inspect the resulting pagination again. CSS conflicts, page fragmentation, browser settings, and Chrome version can all affect the output.
4. Save the page as a PDF
In Chrome’s print interface, choose a PDF destination and save the generated file. Menu names and the exact route to the print interface can vary by platform and browser version, so use the print preview and the available PDF destination in your installation.

If your page has a print button, it can open the current document’s print dialog with:
window.print();The method opens the print dialog for the current document. If the document is still loading, the browser finishes loading before opening the dialog.
5. Choose headers, footers, and page-margin content
Chrome may add its own print headers and footers when there is enough margin space. You can turn that browser-generated content off in the print dialog; margins set to zero or too small for it also prevent it from appearing.
CSS-generated content in page-margin boxes is a separate option. Chrome for Developers says this capability is available from Chrome 131; its article describing the feature was published October 30, 2024. This version qualification applies to generated margin content, not to basic print styles or @page. If you use margin boxes, check the output in the specific Chrome build you target. Browser-generated headers and footers can coexist with author-provided margin content, and their appearance may not be uniform on every page.

Does print CSS change how the webpage looks on screen?
No. Rules inside @media print target printed output, including PDFs, rather than the normal screen presentation.
Can I use Chrome’s print preview to debug print CSS?

Does Chrome 131 mark the start of CSS print styles?
