To make a pre-recorded video smaller without changing its resolution, re-encode it at the same width and height with a lower video bitrate. Keep the original frame rate, export to MP4 with H.264 for a straightforward YouTube-compatible workflow, and inspect a representative section before compressing the whole video. Lower bitrate usually means a smaller file, but can also reduce image quality.
What to change—and what to keep
Resolution is the frame’s pixel dimensions, such as 1920×1080 for standard 16:9 1080p. Set the export dimensions to match the source; do not select a lower-resolution preset. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using the original size (YouTube Help: troubleshoot video quality; YouTube Help: resolution and aspect ratios).
- Keep: source width, source height, and recorded frame rate.
- Adjust first: video bitrate, the most direct way to reduce file size when duration and dimensions stay fixed.
- For a typical YouTube export: MP4 container, H.264 video, and variable bitrate (VBR), which YouTube lists in its upload encoding recommendations (YouTube Help: upload encoding settings).
Changing the codec can also affect compression efficiency, but compatibility depends on the editor and upload/playback workflow. YouTube’s cited upload recommendation lists H.264; verify a different codec with your workflow before using it for a long stream video.
Choose a bitrate without guessing at a guaranteed file size
YouTube publishes recommended SDR upload video bitrates, not minimums or guaranteed output sizes. Its guidance says bitrate needs depend heavily on the codec. These figures are reference points from YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year.

For this task, use the recommendation for your source resolution and frame-rate group as a starting reference, then test lower settings if reducing size is the priority. A lower setting may work well for a mostly static image and look poor on fast motion, detailed scenes, scrolling text, or dark and noisy footage. Audio bitrate and duration also contribute to total file size; YouTube notes that audio playback bitrate is not tied to video resolution (YouTube Help: upload encoding settings).
Compress the video in your editor or encoder
Exact control names differ between programs, but the settings to check are consistent. Before exporting, note the source’s dimensions, frame rate, duration, and current file size.

- Open export or render settings. Choose MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec if your editor offers them.
- Match the source dimensions. Set width and height to the recorded values rather than choosing a smaller resolution preset. For example, preserve 1920×1080 for a 1080p source.
- Preserve the source frame rate. YouTube says content should be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate at which it was recorded (YouTube Help: upload encoding settings).
- Select variable bitrate if available. Set the target video bitrate below the current export or use YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution and frame-rate group as a reference. A lower target generally reduces size, but there is no single suitable minimum for every video.
- Keep audio settings appropriate to the source. Audio adds to the final file size. Avoid assuming that changing resolution is necessary to reduce the video stream’s bitrate.
- Export a short representative section first. Include demanding footage: motion, fine detail, text, and dark or noisy scenes. Compare the result with the source at normal viewing size.
- Export the complete video only after checking. Confirm the resulting dimensions and frame rate still match the source, then compare file size and look for blockiness, smearing, or missing detail.
If quality is unacceptable, raise the bitrate and export again. If quality is good but the file is still too large, try a more efficient codec only if your editing and YouTube upload workflow supports it reliably. Encoding time, file size, visual quality, and compatibility are the practical trade-offs.
