To reduce gaps while rotating prerecorded videos on a 24/7 YouTube stream, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled, then test the files, encoder, and internet connection before going live. That setting loops playback inside OBS; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted feed to YouTube or prevent viewer-side buffering. Continuity depends on each link in the chain: file playback, OBS, your computer, outbound connection, YouTube ingestion, and the viewer’s connection.

First, identify which kind of gap you are trying to prevent

“Playlist gap” can mean several different failures. Separating them helps you fix the right part of the setup instead of changing a playlist setting when the underlying problem is network or playback.

  • Pause or blank between files: the local playlist’s playback behavior or the files themselves may be responsible.
  • A file stops or fails to play: investigate the source, file, or OBS playback.
  • The encoded stream breaks: OBS, the computer, or the outbound connection may have stopped delivering a steady feed.
  • Viewers see buffering: the issue may be with the incoming stream or viewer playback. YouTube notes that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can make buffering more likely.

OBS’s loop control addresses playlist rotation, not every point between the files on your computer and playback on a viewer’s device.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

Use VLC Video for multiple files

  1. Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation says to install 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream.
  3. Add and order the files. Select the local video files and arrange them in the intended sequence. Decide whether to use the separate Shuffle Playlist control; verify the sequence or shuffle behavior before launch.
  4. Enable looping. Turn on Loop Playlist so OBS repeats the playlist after it reaches the end.
  5. Preview the rotation. Let the source play across a file boundary. Confirm the next file starts, the picture is correct, and the audio is audible at the intended level.

Use Media Source for one repeating file

If you want to repeat just one local video, OBS’s regular Media Source has a Loop control. Use VLC Video when you need a playlist; use Media Source when a single file is meant to repeat.

Prepare YouTube and connect the stream

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  2. Create or schedule the event. Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
  3. Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to stream to your channel.
  4. Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. Follow the current Live Control Room and YouTube encoder settings because labels and supported options can change.

Match encoder settings to YouTube and your connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose a codec and settings supported by both the encoder and YouTube; do not assume the highest resolution or bitrate is the most reliable choice.

Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Your total streaming bitrate must fit the actual upload capacity at the streaming location. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate being sent. This is YouTube’s general guidance, not an India-specific ISP performance figure.

Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS, so assess the connection under realistic household or workplace use. No universal upload speed for Indian streaming locations is established here; choose settings against the connection you will actually use.

Preflight the stream before leaving it on

  • Play files through the playlist and check for damaged files, unexpected silence, blank frames, or a wrong order.
  • Test with audio and motion similar to the intended program; a static or silent test may not reveal problems that appear during normal playback.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and verify that the stream can be watched.
  • During the event, monitor the stream health indicator and read any error messages. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
  • Check the stream again after rotation has crossed file boundaries. A successful initial preview does not confirm every file will play correctly.

Consider a tested backup encoder for recovery

A second encoder can provide a recovery path if the primary encoder fails, but only if it is configured and tested. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Treat this as a redundancy test, not a promise that every interruption will be invisible to viewers.

For a 24/7 program, plan how someone will notice a failure and respond. A backup encoder does not fix a bad source file, insufficient upload capacity, or YouTube-side problems by itself.

Reduce buffering without choosing latency blindly

YouTube says lower latency can increase buffering because the player has less read-ahead buffer. For a non-interactive stream—such as music, ambience, or scheduled prerecorded video—do not select low latency solely in the hope of preventing playlist gaps. Choose a latency mode that suits whether interaction is important, then watch actual stream health and viewer playback.

Troubleshoot by separating local playback from delivery

The next file does not start or the playlist pauses

  • Confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source and that the intended files are in the list.
  • Open the files locally and check whether a particular file has a playback problem.
  • Preview the OBS scene across the point where one file ends and the next begins. If the pause is visible in OBS, investigate the source or file rather than YouTube’s network connection.

The stream looks or sounds wrong in OBS

  • Inspect source selection, audio routing, and encoder errors.
  • Check CPU load and local archive files as part of diagnosing encoder-side problems.
  • If the problem appears in the OBS output or local recording, fix that before changing YouTube settings.

OBS output looks healthy, but the YouTube stream breaks or buffers

  • Check outbound connection stability and whether the total bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Consider whether other users or devices are competing for upload bandwidth.
  • Review Live Control Room stream health and error messages. If the outbound connection is faulty, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to test it and contact the ISP.
  • Remember that a disruption in connectivity can break a stream; a local loop setting cannot prevent that.

Plan long broadcasts and copyright carefully

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That describes archive behavior, not a requirement to divide a 24/7 broadcast into a particular schedule. Check current YouTube Studio guidance when planning long events, especially if preserving an archive matters.

Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply to prerecorded playlists; looping a file does not make it exempt. Check YouTube’s current policies and your channel’s status before building a continuous program around third-party material.
