Reg-suit does not capture Storybook stories itself. First render your stories to image files with a compatible capture tool, then configure Reg-suit’s core.actualDir to point to those files. Reg-suit can then retrieve the prior snapshots, compare them, and publish an HTML report.
Understand the Storybook-to-Reg-suit pipeline
The Reg-suit project describes Reg-suit as “a command line interface for visual regression testing.” Its run command handles syncing expected images, comparison, and publishing; Storybook rendering and screenshot capture happen before that step. The handoff between capture and comparison is a directory of image files.
- Storybook renders stories with the project’s providers, styles, fonts, and assets.
- A capture tool opens the stories and saves image files to a directory.
- Reg-suit reads that directory through
core.actualDir, fetches the expected snapshots via a publisher plugin, compares the images, and publishes current images and a report.
See the Reg-suit project for its CLI and configuration documentation.
Check Storybook and capture-tool compatibility
Start by confirming that Storybook itself runs correctly for the project. Storybook’s setup and installation guidance notes that build configuration, runtime providers or decorators, and static assets may need project-specific setup. If a story renders differently from the application, fix its environment before using its screenshot as a baseline.

Choose a capture tool that fits the installed Storybook major version and your capture workflow. The cited Storycap README says it was tested with Storybook 7.x and 8.x. Storycapture’s Storybook integration page says it was created to support Storybook v9 with Storycap. The StoryFreeze listing describes an independent Playwright-based option for Storybook 10 that requires Node.js 22 or newer. These are source-specific compatibility statements, not guarantees for every framework and package combination; verify the tool’s current documentation and your versions before adopting it.
| Capture route | What the cited documentation describes | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|
| Storycap | Tested with Storybook 7.x and 8.x; can capture from a running URL or a built Storybook served locally. | Confirm the project’s Storybook version and whether simple or managed capture fits your needs. |
| Storycapture integration | Created to support Storybook v9 with Storycap. | Verify the integration and package versions for your framework. |
| StoryFreeze | Independent Playwright-based tool listed for Storybook 10; requires Node.js 22 or newer. | Confirm the listing’s current status and the runtime requirement in your environment. |
Compare tools by supported Storybook version, whether they capture from a running URL or built output, per-story timing and viewport controls, browser/runtime requirements, and how their output directory maps to Reg-suit’s actualDir.
Capture Storybook stories into an image directory
With Storycap’s simple mode, start Storybook and capture its running URL. The documented default output directory is __screenshots__; use -o or --outDir to specify a different one.
npx storycap http://localhost:9001 -o __screenshots__
Adjust the URL and port to match the Storybook server in your project. Storycap also documents launching a server for capture with --serverCmd:
Recommended Free Tools
npx storycap http://localhost:9001 --serverCmd "<project Storybook start command>"
For a built Storybook, build it to a directory, serve that directory locally, and point capture at the served URL. Use the build and serving commands appropriate to the project rather than assuming the development server reproduces the built output.

Storycap’s managed mode adds storycap to the addons in .storybook/main.js and registers the withScreenshot decorator in .storybook/preview.js. It enables per-story capture options, such as delay or viewport, and can be useful when stories need explicit timing or capture behavior. Follow the capture tool’s documentation for the installed version and project configuration.
Install and initialize Reg-suit
Run the documented interactive setup from the project directory:
npx reg-suit init
The initializer installs and configures Reg-suit and the plugins you select. The README also documents prepare for configuring plugins that are already installed. Select a key-generator plugin and a publisher plugin: the key generator identifies the snapshot set to compare, while the publisher retrieves earlier images and stores current images and the report.
The Reg-suit README lists a Git-hash key generator and a simple arbitrary-string key generator, as well as publisher plugins for Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage. Choose a key policy that fits how your branches and CI runs should select expected snapshots, and configure the storage provider your project uses.
Point actualDir at capture output
Set core.actualDir to the directory where the capture command actually writes images. The Reg-suit README’s sample uses images; this example instead uses Storycap’s documented __screenshots__ default.

Save the configuration as regconfig.json in the location Reg-suit uses for your project. The example illustrates the configuration shape; replace the bucket value and ensure the selected plugin is installed and configured for your environment. The Reg-suit README supports environment-variable substitution in plugin configuration, which can help keep environment-specific bucket settings out of the checked-in value. Store credentials using your CI platform’s secure secrets mechanism.
Keep screenshot filenames stable across runs so Reg-suit can associate the current image for a story with its prior snapshot. If you change the capture output directory, update actualDir to match.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run capture, comparison, and publishing in order
Generate screenshots before invoking Reg-suit. In a local script or CI job, the essential ordering is:
- Start or build Storybook as required by the chosen capture route.
- Run the screenshot capture command and confirm it has finished writing images to the configured output directory.
- Run Reg-suit:
npx reg-suit run
The Reg-suit README documents run as equivalent to sync-expected, compare, and publish -n. The notification option sends through an installed notifier plugin. Review the resulting HTML comparison report. Treat the first published snapshots as an intentional baseline decision; do not accept them automatically without checking that the rendered stories represent the desired state.
Set comparison sensitivity deliberately
Rendering can vary because of fonts, asynchronous content, browser behavior, or antialiasing. Reg-suit provides several comparison controls; their values should reflect the stability and risk tolerance of the project, not be copied as universal defaults.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
Reg-suit reports missing or empty actual images
Check that capture completed successfully, that the output directory contains image files, and that the relative path in core.actualDir resolves from the Reg-suit configuration context. The capture command’s output path and actualDir must agree.
Every image appears different, or expected snapshots are missing
On an initial run, there may be no published baseline to retrieve. Review the report and establish the intended baseline through your project’s workflow. For later runs, check that the publisher can access the configured storage and that the selected key-generator policy points to the expected snapshot set.
Stories differ from the application or change between runs
Check runtime providers and decorators, fonts, theme setup, static assets, component data, and network-loaded resources. Ensure capture waits for the story to finish rendering; managed per-story options can set a delay or viewport where supported. Fix rendering instability before raising thresholds to hide it.
Capture fails with a version or runtime error
Verify the exact Storybook major version, capture-tool version, and browser/runtime requirements. In particular, the cited Storycap README’s tested range is Storybook 7.x and 8.x, while the cited StoryFreeze listing specifies Storybook 10 and Node.js 22 or newer. Do not assume a package configuration documented for one major version will work unchanged with another.

Cloud publishing fails in CI
Check that the selected publisher plugin is installed, its bucket configuration resolves correctly, and CI has access to the required credentials. Reg-suit documents environment-variable substitution in plugin configuration; the project must still provide those values securely at runtime.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot of a website rather than a repeatable Storybook-story baseline, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace Storybook capture or Reg-suit’s snapshot comparison pipeline; it is an alternative for taking website screenshots directly.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.
