For alternating streams, set explicit start and stop times with a handoff margin; for streams that should run together, start them independently and check that the VPS can handle their combined workload. This keeps a change to one schedule from accidentally stopping or restarting the other.
Separate the two streams into independent jobs
Treat each playlist as a separate job on the VPS, even when both streams belong to the same YouTube channel. For example, name the jobs playlist-a and playlist-b. Each should have its own media list, working directory, process or service definition, YouTube event settings, and logs. This is an operational pattern, not a scheduler configuration mandated by YouTube; exact commands depend on your VPS operating system and encoder.
- Use a distinct playlist manifest and process definition for each feed.
- Make start, stop, restart, and log actions target one named job at a time.
- Give each job independent restart behavior and define what should happen if it exits: restart that job or alert an operator.
- Avoid broad stop or restart commands when you intend to change only one schedule.
Set the schedules according to whether streams alternate or run together
If the schedules take turns
Write down explicit start and end times for both jobs, preferably in UTC so the schedule is unambiguous across time zones and daylight-saving changes. Leave a handoff margin: stop the outgoing encoder, confirm it has ended, then allow the next YouTube event to be ready before starting the next encoder. Do not schedule the second job to start at the exact moment the first is meant to stop; shutdown, event readiness, and process handling may take time.
Keep each job’s schedule separate. A change to the end time for playlist-a should not modify or trigger a restart of playlist-b.

If both streams should run at once
Run both jobs independently and account for their combined CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network use. The sources cited here do not provide a VPS sizing formula, so do not assume that capacity for one stream guarantees capacity for two. Start both under realistic conditions and monitor resource use and stream quality.
Connect each process to the intended YouTube event
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube’s live-streaming workflow, create or schedule the stream and identify the event that the encoder should send to.
- Use that event’s stream URL and key in the matching encoder job. Keep the endpoint and key associated with the correct process and event. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential that allows it to accept the encoder feed. Store it with appropriate file permissions and avoid printing it in shared logs. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Verify the pairing before automation. Check that
playlist-ahas the settings for its intended event andplaylist-bhas the settings for its own. Keep the configuration explicit rather than relying on an operator to remember which key belongs to which job. - Test each job separately. Start each encoder and check the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the schedule. Confirm the stream is accessible and inspect audio and video quality for each output.
YouTube documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply at the same time. Two streams fit those limits only if other active streams have not used the remaining capacity. The cited guidance does not say that two scheduled streams must always use different keys, so check the active stream count and key configuration in Live Control Room rather than assuming a key arrangement. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Archiving is not a way to keep an encoder running indefinitely; it is separate from the VPS process and schedule.
Check the media lists before launch
If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play files in sequence, validate the list and ensure the files have compatible stream layouts and time bases. FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to adjust the next file’s timestamps; inaccurate duration information can produce timestamp artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check each playlist independently. A valid manifest for one job does not establish that the other job’s media files are compatible or that its timestamps will behave correctly.
Monitor both jobs independently
- Check each process state, exit code, and log separately.
- Watch VPS CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network use, especially when both jobs are concurrent.
- Check each event’s preview and public watch page, and monitor audio and video quality.
- Decide in advance whether a failure should restart only its own process or alert an operator.
YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup, checking the Live Control Room preview, verifying that the live stream is accessible, and monitoring stream quality. Apply those checks to each output, not just the first one. YouTube’s encoder workflow also includes ending the stream when the event is over; do not treat a running VPS process as proof that the intended event is live.

Troubleshoot overlap and failed handoffs
