Use a small launcher to read shared defaults and per-stream settings, then start one FFmpeg process for each independent stream. For identical feeds sent to multiple destinations, FFmpeg’s tee muxer is a different option: it encodes once and fans the output out.
What “one FFmpeg config file” should mean
FFmpeg takes inputs, outputs, mappings, and options on the command line; options are associated with the next input or output. Its documentation does not describe a built-in configuration file for controlling many independent jobs. A manifest in YAML or JSON is therefore an application-level design: your launcher reads it and constructs an FFmpeg command for each stream.
This keeps common settings in one place without forcing unrelated channels to share a single process. The launcher and its service supervisor are your own deployment components, not FFmpeg features.
Choose separate processes or tee

Use separate processes for independent YouTube channels or events. Tee is for distributing the same feed; it is not a playlist scheduler or a way to control different programs independently. FFmpeg’s tee muxer cannot automatically select streams, so specify explicit -map options. Some output formats may also require format-specific options.

Design a manifest and launcher
Keep shared defaults and per-stream settings distinct
A maintainable manifest might contain a defaults section for common values and a streams list for individual jobs. This is illustrative pseudo-structure, not executable FFmpeg syntax:

frame_rate: 25Replace example values with your actual media paths and the server URL shown for each YouTube event. The key reference should resolve through an environment variable or a secrets store. The launcher—not FFmpeg—must turn each entry into a command, apply defaults and overrides, and handle secrets securely.
What each stream entry needs
- Stable name: Use it to identify the process, log, alert, and event.
- Input: A file or playlist appropriate for that stream.
- YouTube destination: The event’s server URL and its corresponding stream key.
- Explicit maps: Choose the audio and video streams deliberately instead of relying on automatic selection.
- Overrides: Add stream-specific frame rate, resolution, encoder, bitrate, or other output settings only where needed.
What the launcher should do
- Validate that each active stream has an input, destination, key reference, and valid mappings.
- Resolve common defaults and per-stream overrides.
- Start a separate FFmpeg process for each independent stream and send its output to a separate log.
- Return process failures to a supervisor. Choose a deliberate restart and backoff policy for your operating system and deployment rather than assuming FFmpeg will manage a fleet for you.
- Keep stream keys out of source control and logs. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address”; if a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room.
Configure YouTube output and plan capacity
Use the settings recommended for your event
For each job, select an output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that match YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance is the reference for current recommendations. Use explicit mappings and ensure the command’s input/output option order is correct; FFmpeg command-line options are scoped to the relevant file.
There is no universal bitrate or number of streams that can be declared safe for every setup. Add together the outgoing bitrates of all concurrent jobs and compare that total with measured, sustained upload capacity, leaving headroom for normal network variation. Encoding load also depends on the actual inputs, chosen settings, and available hardware; the published platform limits do not certify what a particular computer can encode continuously.

Test the real workload before relying on it
- Create unlisted or private events for testing and confirm that each process connects to the intended event.
- Test video motion and audio similar to the planned stream, not only a static image or silent clip.
- Observe YouTube’s stream health during the test and check for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, or audio issues.
- Run all intended streams concurrently long enough to expose resource contention and network bottlenecks.
- If recording locally, verify that recordings are being written and track available storage.
YouTube’s live-streaming checklist advises testing with audio and movement like the real event and monitoring stream health. Treat that as operational guidance, not a performance guarantee for a particular setup.
Know YouTube’s concurrent-stream and archive limits
YouTube’s current Help guidance, checked in 2026, says a channel can have 10 active streams and a stream key can have 3 active streams at once; both limits apply concurrently. These are account-side limits, not a promise that one computer or internet connection can sustain that many encodes. See YouTube’s live-streaming limits.
Continuous streaming and complete automatic archiving are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, plan local recording or segmentation, or divide the broadcast into event-sized sessions. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Use tee for a same-feed fan-out
If one encoded program must reach several destinations, tee can avoid encoding the same audio and video separately for each output. This is not the right model for different channels playing different videos or using independent settings.

A conceptual command shape is:

-f tee "[f=flv]OUTPUT_ONE|[f=flv]OUTPUT_TWO"Replace the placeholders with real inputs and outputs, and adapt the format options to the destinations. This is an illustrative pattern, not a ready-to-run YouTube command: output syntax, escaping, credentials, and format requirements depend on the actual destinations. Tee requires explicit stream maps, and delimiters or special characters in output URLs may need escaping. Consult the FFmpeg tee muxer documentation.
Keep a 24/7 deployment observable
- Alert when a process exits, output becomes stale, or a supervisor enters repeated restart attempts.
- Check YouTube stream health as well as local process status; a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove the event is receiving a healthy feed.
- Watch CPU, memory, network throughput, and disk space under the full concurrent workload.
- Separate logs by stream so a failure or bad input can be traced to the affected job.
- Keep a recovery plan for network or YouTube disconnects, key rotation, and exhausted storage.
Common problems and fixes
A stream connects to the wrong event or fails authentication
Check that the server URL and stream key belong to that event, and that the launcher resolves the intended key reference. Do not copy a key from another stream entry as a shortcut. Reset an exposed key in Live Control Room.
Audio or video is missing
Inspect the input’s streams and correct the explicit -map values. This is especially important with tee, which does not auto-select streams.
Several streams become unstable together
Compare aggregate outgoing bitrate with measured sustained upload capacity, then review host encoding load. Reduce output demands or run fewer concurrent encodes if the available system cannot sustain the workload.

A process is running but YouTube reports poor stream health
Check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations, review the actual outgoing bitrate and dropped frames, and test with representative motion and audio. Process status is not a substitute for monitoring the receiving event.
The automatic archive is incomplete or missing
Check the event duration. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; retain a local recording or split the broadcast into shorter events if a complete VOD matters.
