YouTube can schedule and promote a live event, but its documented scheduling controls do not automatically switch playlist blocks when one ends. You need to arrange the content transition in the system feeding the stream to YouTube—such as an encoder or associated automation—and verify that it supports end-of-block transitions before relying on it for continuous streaming.
What YouTube scheduling does—and what it does not do
A scheduled YouTube stream is an upcoming live event. Scheduling can help viewers find the event and set a reminder, but it is not a playlist-block scheduler. The documented YouTube controls for stream keys, stream URLs, latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop do not describe automatic playlist changes.
The workflow has two parts: YouTube manages the live event, while an encoder supplies the live video feed. The encoder-side setup must determine what plays next when a block ends. YouTube’s published instructions do not identify a particular encoder or automation product that performs this transition.

How to schedule the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose Manage, then schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow allows you to reuse stream settings or create a new stream.
- Prepare the encoder-side content sequence. Configure the encoder or related automation to provide the intended playlist blocks and to transition at the end of each block. Confirm this behavior in the product’s documentation or a test; do not assume a YouTube schedule, stream key, or auto-start setting does it.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder. Keep the key private: it is the credential that lets an encoder send video to the channel.
- Check the preview. Start the encoder and confirm that the expected video and audio appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
- Promote the event if useful. A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming to subscribers, who can choose Notify me for a reminder. That reminder relates to the event’s start, not to later playlist-block changes.
YouTube advises creators to set up encoders at least two hours before an event and start them at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time. It also recommends testing the setup and checking the Live Control Room preview. These are preparation recommendations for an event, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. How to verify that the next block starts automatically
Before scheduling a continuous stream, test the full sequence outside the live event if your encoder or automation allows it. Confirm that the next block starts at the intended boundary, including when a video ends earlier or later than expected, and that the outgoing feed remains connected during the change. The specific product and configuration required are not established by YouTube’s cited instructions, so verify the behavior with the tool you choose.

- Check whether the tool explicitly supports an end-of-block transition, rather than only a fixed schedule or manual playlist selection.
- Confirm it can keep sending a compatible live feed to YouTube continuously and lets you preview or intervene.
- Find out what happens after an interruption: whether the feed resumes, restarts the current item, or advances to another block.
- Test the stream URL and key with the selected encoder, and use the preview to catch missing video, audio, or an incorrect source before going live.
YouTube supports RTMPS, which is RTMP transmitted over TLS/SSL. If the encoder supports it, obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use that endpoint. Compatibility depends on the encoder; see YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Ending the stream and the 24/7 caveat
YouTube’s documented end procedure is to click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that statement applies to a 24/7 stream. A scheduled event and its archive behavior do not establish that playlist blocks will change automatically or that a feed will stay uninterrupted.
