You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch a YouTube playlist stream at a set time or after you sign in—but Task Scheduler only starts the encoder or script. YouTube Studio creates the live event and supplies its stream key; your encoder plays the playlist and sends the video. For a stream to stay live around the clock, the PC, network, encoder and playlist source must keep working.

What you need before scheduling a stream

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • An encoder or script that can play your playlist and send its output to YouTube. The exact playlist setup depends on the software; there is no universal Windows command that configures every encoder.
  • A Windows PC that can stay on and connected for the scheduled stream, plus an upload connection capable of sustaining the selected bitrate.
  • A stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a shared script, screenshot, log or support post.

Task Scheduler does not play media, authenticate with YouTube or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Its role is to launch a program when a trigger occurs.

Create the YouTube live event and get the connection details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule an event, then choose or create its stream settings.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. YouTube describes the key as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Keep it private.
  3. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. If the encoder will not connect, use YouTube’s current stream-key troubleshooting guidance; do not share the key to get help.
  4. In the encoder, choose the playlist, order and loop behavior. Confirm whether it reads local files or a network-hosted source, and make sure the files or source will remain available throughout the stream.

Configure the encoder for YouTube

Choose settings supported by both the encoder and the available upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codec options, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL for encrypted transport.

  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes this control. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate: Test the upload connection and choose a bitrate the connection can sustain, leaving practical headroom for variation. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate rather than assuming the advertised connection speed is available to the stream.
  • Audio and motion: Test representative portions of the playlist, including its loudest audio and busiest movement. Review stream health rather than judging only the encoder preview.
  • Transport: Select RTMPS if supported by the encoder and workflow; otherwise confirm the chosen transport is supported by both ends.

For an event, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting, verify the watch page after going live and monitor audio, video and stream health. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Create a scheduled task in Windows

In Task Scheduler, create a task whose action launches the encoder executable or a batch/script file that starts it. Microsoft documents time-based, boot and logon triggers; the right choice depends on when the encoder can run.

Choose a trigger that matches the encoder

  • At a scheduled time: Use a time-based trigger when the stream should begin at a specific hour. The task starts the configured action; the encoder must still be set to play and send the correct playlist.
  • At startup: A boot trigger can launch software after Windows starts, but do not assume a desktop-dependent encoder will have an interactive session available.
  • At log on: Use a logon trigger if the encoder needs a signed-in desktop. Microsoft notes that this trigger runs when the specified user logs on, not merely when the computer powers on.

Microsoft’s overview of Task Scheduler triggers and actions explains that a task runs a selected program when its trigger criteria are met. If Windows needs time to establish a network connection or mount storage after sign-in, configure an appropriate delay and test it on the target PC; the required delay depends on that environment.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Set the action and test it

  1. Open Task Scheduler and create a task with the trigger you chose.
  2. Add an action to start the encoder executable, or the specific script that launches it. Use the executable or script’s documented arguments and playlist configuration; syntax varies by software.
  3. Keep credentials and the stream key out of publicly shared scripts and screenshots. Restrict access to any file that must contain sensitive connection details.
  4. Save the task, then use Task Scheduler’s Run action or the encoder’s own test procedure to verify that it starts correctly.
  5. Confirm in YouTube’s Live Control Room that the preview arrives, start the stream, open the watch page and check that video and audio are playing as expected.

For Microsoft’s task settings, including time limits and wake behavior, see TaskSettings.

Choose an approach for the kind of 24/7 stream you need

Approach Useful when Trade-off to check
Scheduled launch The playlist stream should start at a particular time. A trigger launches the action; it does not configure playlist behavior or ensure recovery after a failure.
Boot trigger The PC should try to start the task when Windows starts. A desktop encoder may need an interactive user session, so test whether it runs correctly before sign-in.
Logon trigger The encoder expects a signed-in desktop. The task waits for the specified user to log on.
Desktop encoder You want a visible interface to configure playlists and observe the encoder. The PC and any required desktop session must remain available; capabilities vary by encoder.
Headless or service-style encoder The workflow is designed to run without an interactive desktop. Confirm its playlist controls, recovery behavior and RTMPS support in that software’s documentation.
Local playlist files The media is stored on the Windows PC. The PC’s storage and files must remain accessible for the duration of the stream.
Network-hosted playlist source The media is served from another system or location. The encoder depends on that source and the network path staying available.

YouTube documents both software and standalone hardware encoder categories, but these categories alone do not establish that a specific vendor is best. Compare options by playlist control, interactive-session needs, recovery, transport support and how much supervision the setup requires.

Reliability limits, sleep and long-running tasks

A scheduled task is a launch mechanism, not an uptime guarantee. Continuous streaming still depends on Windows running, the encoder staying healthy, the playlist source remaining available and the upload connection continuing to work. Test the full setup and monitor the stream after launch.

  • Wake from sleep: Task Scheduler has a WakeToRun setting that requests the computer wake for a task. Actual behavior depends on the PC, firmware and power configuration; test the hardware rather than assuming a sleeping machine will wake reliably.
  • Execution time limit: Microsoft’s TaskSettings reference says a task is stopped 72 hours after it starts by default unless ExecutionTimeLimit is changed. Check that setting if the task itself remains running for days; do not assume a long-running task is exempt.
  • Power interruptions: A UPS can be an optional backup for brief power loss. It will not fix internet failures, Windows problems or encoder faults.
  • Archive duration: YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one continuous archive for a stream longer than 12 hours; check YouTube’s current guidance and plan longer-run recording separately.

Copyright, reused content and playlist suitability

Scheduling does not change YouTube’s rules for the material you broadcast. Before putting a playlist on a public live stream, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the music, video and other content, and review YouTube’s applicable policies on copyright and monetization. A stream key authorizes the encoder connection; it does not grant rights to playlist content. Check your channel and content eligibility directly in YouTube Studio, since the sources cited here do not establish a universal eligibility outcome for every channel or playlist.

Troubleshoot common scheduling and stream failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The stream does not start at the expected time The trigger, account or scheduled action is not behaving as intended. Review the trigger time and user account, then test the task with Task Scheduler’s Run action. For a desktop encoder, verify whether the selected trigger provides a signed-in session.
The task runs but YouTube shows no incoming video The encoder may not be launching the playlist, may have incorrect connection details, or may not reach YouTube. Check the encoder’s own status, stream URL and private stream key, then inspect Live Control Room preview and stream health. Reset an exposed key and use YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance if needed.
The playlist starts but stops or pauses The encoder, media source, storage or network may have failed. Check that the source files remain accessible, review encoder logs locally, confirm the PC and network stayed on, and test the playlist independently of the scheduled launch.
The PC sleeps or fails to wake Power settings, firmware or hardware may not support the expected wake behavior. Test WakeToRun and the computer’s power configuration under real conditions; do not rely on the setting without a successful test.
A task ends after days The task may have reached its configured execution time limit. Review TaskSettings and ExecutionTimeLimit, noting Microsoft’s documented default of 72 hours unless changed.
Video or audio quality is poor The selected settings may exceed available upload capacity or do not suit the playlist. Test bitrate, codec and keyframe settings, exercise representative content, and monitor YouTube stream health.
A long stream has no single expected archive YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Check current YouTube guidance and design a separate recording or archive workflow for longer runs.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the aim is a prerecorded YouTube playlist that stays live without keeping a Windows PC running, StreamNeo runs the uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
