You can automate OBS to start sending video to YouTube, but AutoHotkey and OBS cannot guarantee one indefinitely continuous public broadcast. First enable YouTube Live, configure and test OBS, then automate OBS startup only after confirming how YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings behave. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so plan for the platform’s duration handling rather than assuming a single broadcast will run forever.
What AutoHotkey and OBS can—and cannot—do
OBS is the encoder: it sends your selected video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and key. AutoHotkey can be used as a Windows automation layer, but the verified setup details here support OBS launch automation—not a particular AutoHotkey script or exact syntax. YouTube controls whether the broadcast is actually live to viewers, and its settings affect whether an encoder connection starts or stops a broadcast automatically.
That distinction matters: an OBS status showing that it is streaming does not by itself prove that the YouTube broadcast is publicly live. Check the preview and state in YouTube’s Live Control Room before relying on unattended operation. See YouTube’s live stream settings and OBS’s launch parameters.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and compliance with its minimum age rule. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s eligibility and activation status before configuring automation; repeated OBS launches cannot bypass a channel restriction. Configure YouTube and OBS
1. Create or select an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select a stream that uses an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. The key is a credential—treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public AutoHotkey script, screenshot, video, or article example. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.

2. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS and, if you are new to it, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS says the wizard considers hardware and network conditions when suggesting settings.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the YouTube service if available, or enter YouTube’s server URL and the stream key in the appropriate fields.
- Set up the scene you intend to broadcast. Add the necessary video, image, window, or capture sources, and confirm the desired microphone or other audio source appears and moves on the OBS audio meters.
- Choose an output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your computer and upload connection can sustain reliably. Avoid selecting a quality based only on what the computer can render: the upstream connection must carry it steadily too.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). The suitable bitrate and resolution depend on the stream configuration and available upload capacity; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into output formats for viewers and devices.
Test the stream before automating it
- Start with a private or unlisted test when appropriate. In OBS, click Start Streaming and check that the Live Control Room receives the encoder feed.
- Test the actual content: include movement and sound, not just a still image. Watch the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators for problems such as missing audio, freezing, or unstable delivery.
- Let the test run for a few minutes. OBS’s Quick Start recommends testing before the real stream; YouTube also recommends monitoring audio and video quality. Do not announce the broadcast until you have confirmed the preview and the intended viewer-facing state.
- Stop the test and verify the expected stop behavior in both OBS and YouTube. Review the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio before scheduling an unattended launch.

Add OBS launch automation on Windows
OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter. Its launch-parameter guidance also says that Windows scheduled tasks should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory. This can start OBS and tell it to begin streaming; it does not establish that YouTube will automatically make the broadcast live, that a stopped or expired broadcast will restart correctly, or that the computer and network will stay available.

- First test a normal OBS launch and stream manually. Confirm OBS has the right profile, scene, encoder settings, and YouTube connection.
- For a Windows scheduled or automated launch, use OBS’s documented
--startstreamingparameter and set the task’s working directory to the OBS installation folder containingobs64.exe. - Use AutoHotkey only as an optional way to orchestrate a Windows launch or user action. The exact AutoHotkey v2 syntax and compatibility details are not established here; verify them against the current official AutoHotkey v2 documentation before using a script. Do not publish or rely on an unverified code sample.
- After an automated launch, check OBS and the Live Control Room. Confirm that the feed is arriving and that YouTube is in the intended live state before leaving it unattended.
OBS’s launch-parameter documentation is dated 2021, so check the current behavior for the OBS version installed on the PC before depending on it in a production setup. Auto-start and auto-stop behavior remains dependent on YouTube’s stream settings.
Choose the right kind of “continuous” operation
These approaches solve different parts of the workflow; none guarantees unattended uptime by itself.

YouTube’s encoder setup page documents the under-12-hour automatic archive rule; it does not establish that every longer stream is impossible. For a longer-running setup, verify current platform handling and decide whether recurring broadcasts or a service designed to loop uploaded video better fits your needs. Keep the stream monitored and recoverable
- Keep the PC powered, awake, and connected to the internet for as long as it is encoding. AutoHotkey cannot correct a power cut, thermal shutdown, platform restriction, or copyright or policy action.
- Use OBS’s automatic reconnect settings as a recovery aid, not a promise of uninterrupted service. A reconnect may not restore a broadcast that has ended or otherwise needs operator attention.
- Monitor the YouTube preview and stream health, along with OBS’s audio meters. A stream can remain connected while the wrong scene, silent audio source, or frozen content is being sent.
- Measure the upload connection under realistic conditions and select a quality it can sustain. Ethernet may be useful for a particular setup, but no cable category is a substitute for checking connection reliability.
- Protect the stream key. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the saved OBS connection.
Common problems and fixes
OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube is not live
Check the Live Control Room for the incoming preview and broadcast state. Review YouTube’s auto-start setting and confirm the correct stream is selected. An active encoder connection and a viewer-facing live broadcast are not always the same state.

Lower the output quality or bitrate to a level the upload connection can reliably sustain, then run another test. Check OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators and monitor the connection during the test. YouTube’s encoder guidance is the reference for current settings.

The stream is live but has no sound or the wrong picture
Check the selected OBS scene and sources, confirm the intended audio device, and watch the audio meters while producing sound. Test with real movement and audio before restarting the public broadcast.
A scheduled task opens OBS but streaming does not start
Confirm the launch parameter and set the Windows task’s working directory to the OBS installation folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS’s launch guidance specifies. Test the same launch manually before adding more automation.
The stream stops and does not recover
Check whether OBS is still running, whether the network returned, and whether the YouTube broadcast remains active or has ended. Automatic reconnect can help with some interruptions, but it cannot guarantee recovery from a machine crash, sustained outage, or ended broadcast. Confirm status in the Live Control Room before restarting.

The stream key may have been exposed
Reset the key in YouTube Studio, then replace the saved key in OBS. Avoid storing it in publicly accessible scripts or sharing screenshots that reveal it.

Can AutoHotkey restart a YouTube stream after a power outage?
No. A script cannot restore power or guarantee that OBS and YouTube will reconnect into an active broadcast.
